The Multimedia PC Marketing Council
The Multimedia PC Marketing Council was formed in May of this year
to support and promote multimedia on the Windows platform. The
founding members -- AT & T, CompuAdd, Creative Labs, Media
Vision, Microsoft, NEC Technologies, Olivetti, Philips, Tandy, Video
Seven and Zenith -- formed the council to accomplish the following:
- To inform and educate the public about the compelling nature of
multimedia in general and the MPC platform in particular.
- To evangelize and support the independent software community
- To promote, administer and protect the "MPC" trademark
The distinctive MPC trademark will appear on hardware and
software products that meet the Multimedia PC specification. The
hardware requirements include: a 286 (10MHz or faster), 386 or
486 processor, 2MB or more of RAM, 30MB or larger hard disk, CD-
ROM drive, VGA, and a digital audio board, all running under DOS and
Windows with Multimedia Extensions version 1.0.
The use of the trademark on hardware and software is a way of
guaranteeing plug-and-play simplicity for the consumer, and a way
of helping the marketplace develop quickly. For this reason, it is
anticipated that many additional hardware companies will support
the MPC standard as they announce hardware that meets the
specifications in the near future. Software companies that are
already supporting the MPC standard include Microsoft, Sierra-on-
Line, Broderbund, Brittanica, Autodesk, Corel Systems, MacroMind,
Maxis, Gold Disk, Owl, Authorware, Asymetrix and Warner New
Media, with additional companies being added every week.
Adding the benefits of CD-quality sound, animation and near
photographic quality images to traditional PC's is certain to greatly
enhance the capability of computers to perform, educate and
entertain. The Multimedia PC Marketing Council is pleased to have
this opportunity to demonstrate to the marketplace that multimedia
has finally arrived!
