  23.    Required configuration
  24.      * Pentium processor or compatible
  25.      * CDROM drive
  26.      * At least 32 MB RAM, 64 MB recommended
  27.  
  28.    Installing MandrakeLinux is, in most cases, as simple as putting your
  29.    Installation CD in your CDROM drive, and restarting your machine.
  30.    Please refer to point 1.
  31.  
  32.    NOTE:
  33.  
  34.      * If you upgrade from 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 or 8.0 MandrakeLinux versions, do
  35.        not forget to backup your system.
  36.      * Upgrading from earlier versions (prior to 7.0) is NOT supported.
  37.        In that case, you need to do a fresh installation and not an
  38.        update.

  42.    You can also install MandrakeLinux onto a Windows 95/98/ME system,
  43.    using Linux for Windows. This does not require disk partitioning, and
  44.    installs Linux in a Windows folder. It is a convenient way to discover
  45.    MandrakeLinux without modifying your Windows system. It is however
  46.    significantly slower than a regular installation. Also, your
  47.    MandrakeLinux installation is lost if you re-install Windows. Please
  48.    refer to point 2 to use Linux for Windows.

  50.    Below are listed the different ways to install MandrakeLinux:
  51.  
  52.     1. Boot directly from CD
  53.     2. Installing onto Windows 95/98/ME
  54.     3. Make a boot floppy with Windows
  55.     4. Other install methods

  58.   1. Boot directly from CD
  59.  
  60.    The Installation CDROM is bootable. In most cases, just insert the CD
  61.    into the drive and reboot the machine. Follow the instructions
  62.    displayed on screen: press the [Enter] key to start the installation,
  63.    or press [F1] for additional help.
  64.  
  65.    NOTE:
  66.  
  67.    On some portable computers, the system may not reboot from the CD. If
  68.    this is the case, you should prepare a boot floppy. See point 3
  69.    for details.

  73.   2. Installing onto Windows 95/98/ME
  74.  
  75.    To install MandrakeLinux within a Windows folder, avoiding any disk
  76.    partitioning, you should:
  77.     1. Insert the first CD,
  78.     2. Reboot the system,
  79.     3. Press [F1] when the MandrakeLinux screen comes up,
  80.     4. Type lnx4win at the prompt, then press [Enter]
  81.  
  82.    Follow the instructions shown on screen.
  83.  
  84.    Additional details on lnx4win can be found in the appropriate
  85.    readme file.

  87.    NOTE:
  88.  
  89.    When inserting the CDROM under Windows, a window will popup to give
  90.    you access to an installation summary and to MandrakeLinux demos and
  91.    tutorial. It will also permit you to create directly the boot floppy
  92.    described in point 3.

  94.    If the window does not popup, run:
  95.  
  96.    D:\dosutils\autorun.exe
  97.  
  98.    (assuming D is your CDROM's drive letter).
  99.

  102.   3. Make a boot floppy with Windows
  103.  
  104.    If your computer cannot boot from the CDROM and previous methods do
  105.    not work, you must make a boot floppy under Windows as follows:
  106.  
  107.      * insert the CDROM, then open the icon "My Computer", right click on
  108.        the CDROM drive icon and select "Open"
  109.      * go into the "dosutils" directory and double-click on the
  110.        "rawwritewin" icon
  111.      * insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive
  112.      * select "D:\images\cdrom.img" in the "Image File" field (assuming
  113.        that your CDROM drive is "D:", otherwise replace "D:" as needed)
  114.      * select "A:" in the "Floppy Drive" field then click on "Write".

  116.    To begin the installation:
  117.  
  118.      * insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy, then
  119.      * restart the computer.
  120.

  123.   4. Other installation methods
  124.  
  125.    If for any reason the previous methods do not fit your needs (you want
  126.    to perform a network install, an install from pcmcia devices or...),
  127.    you will need to make a boot floppy:
  128.  
  129.      * Under Linux (or other modern UNIX systems) type at prompt:
  130.        $ dd if=xxxxx.img of=/dev/fd0
  131.      * Under Windows, follow the method described in point 3, but using
  132.        xxxxx.img (see below) instead of cdrom.img.
  133.      * Under DOS, assuming your CD is drive D:, type:
  134.        D:\> dosutils\rawrite.exe -f images\xxxxx.img -d A
  135.  
  136.    where "xxxxx.img" is one of the available boot images:

  154.    blank.img is a minimal image to customize kernel installation.

  158.    You can also use a text mode installation if, for any reason, you have
  159.    trouble with the default graphical installation. To use it, press [F1]
  160.    at MandrakeLinux welcome screen, then type "text" at the prompt.
  161.  
  162.    If you need to rescue your existing MandrakeLinux system, insert your
  163.    Installation CDROM (or any relevant boot floppy), press [F1] at
  164.    MandrakeLinux welcome screen, then rescue at the prompt.

  171.   Below are the main stages of installation:
  172.  
  173.     1. Insert your Installation CDROM (or Installation Floppy disk if
  174.        necessary) and restart your machine.
  175.     2. Press [Enter] when the MandrakeLinux welcome screen appears and
  176.        carefully follow the instructions.
  177.     3. When the installation is complete take out the CD-ROM when ejected
  178.        (and any floppy disk if present in drive); your machine will
  179.        restart. If it does not, restart it manually.
  180.     4. MandrakeLinux will start. After bootup, you can login on your
  181.        machine under the user account setup during install, or as "root".
  182.  
  183.    Important note:
  184.  
  185.    The "root" account will give you unrestricted access to your Linux
  186.    system. Do not use it except to configure or administer Linux. For
  187.    every day use, use a normal user account which you can configure with
  188.    the "userdrake" tool, or with the commands "adduser" and "passwd".
