  47. your journey across Middle-earth.

  54. The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II demo requires DirectX 9.0c To
  55. install DirectX 9.0c or later, visit:

  78. Installation Instructions

  81. Before running The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II demo, ensure you 
  82. have the latest drivers for your video and audio cards installed. 
  83. You can download the appropriate drivers from your video and audio
  84. card manufacturer's Web site.
  85.  
  86. Avoid running any other programs in the background, as this may
  87. conflict with the demo. This includes any virus-protection program 
  88. that you have running, which can hinder performance.
  89.  
  90. To install The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II demo:
  91.  
  92. 1.    Double-click on the demo executable.
  93.  
  94. 2.    You will be prompted by a window that gives you the option 
  95.     of choosing where on your hard drive to extract the contents 
  96.     of the demo executable.
  97.  
  98. 3.    If the location specified in the field under ôUnzip to folder:ö 
  99.     is satisfactory, press the ôUnzipö button, and proceed to step 5.
  100.  
  101. 4.    If you wish to change the folder where these files will be 
  102.     extracted to, either type in the location manually in the field 
  103.     under ôUnzip to folder:ö, or use the ôBrowseàö button to select 
  104.     from an existing folder on your hard drive.

  106. 5.    After all the files have been successfully unzipped, open the 
  107.     folder where you unzipped the contents of the demo executable 
  108.     file.

  110. 6.    Double-click on ôsetup.exeö and follow the on-screen 
  111.     instructions provided with InstallShield.

  117. Uninstalling The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II Demo

  120. To uninstall The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II demo:

  122. 1.    Open up your Control Panel from the Start Menu.
  123.  
  124. 2.    Choose ôAdd or Remove Programsö.
  125.  
  126. 3.    Scroll down the list of installed software until you reach 
  127.     ôThe Battle for Middle-earth II(tm) demoö and click on the 
  128.     ôRemoveö button.

  130. 4.    Follow the on-screen instructions provided with InstallShield.

  134. Troubleshooting

  137. An outdated video or sound driver can lead to slow and choppy 
  138. gameplay, or in some cases can prevent the demo from running at
  139. all. To ensure an enjoyable experience with The Battle for Middle-
  140. earth(tm) II demo, be sure that you have the most recent video and sound
  141. drivers installed. These drivers are typically available for
  142. download from your system or hardware manufacturerÆs Web site. If
  143. you are not sure what type of video or sound card you have, or you
  144. need assistance with updating the drivers on your system, please
  145. refer to the documentation that came with your system or peripheral.

  149. Save Games and Settings

  152. The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II demo save files and other user-related 
  153. settings are stored in the "My Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II demo Files"
  154. folder, which can typically be accessed by going to your C:\ drive, 
  155. opening the "Documents and Settings" folder, opening the folder 
  156. labeled with your Windows user name, and opening the "Application
  157. Data" folder. If you don't see an "Application Data" folder here, 
  158. do the following:
  159.  
  160.   1) Bring up any Windows Explorer window by holding down the Windows
  161.      key on your keyboard and pressing "E".
  162.   2) Click on "Tools" from the top menu.
  163.   3) Choose "Folder Options" from the drop down menu.
  164.   4) Choose the "View" tab.
  165.   5) Click on the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button under
  166.      "Advanced settings".
  167.   6) Click on "Apply" and then "OK".
  168.   7) The "Application Data" folder should now be visible.

  172. Known Issues

  175. On some video cards that are running dual-monitor setups, you may
  176. encounter visual distortions on the screen. If you encounter this
  177. issue, go to the demo's "Main Menu" and click on "Options". Choose 
  178. a different resolution under "Display Options" and then click on 
  179. "Accept Changes". This should correct the problem. If you choose, 
  180. you can switch back to your original resolution.
  181.  
  182. You will experience problems running the demo with a monitor set to 
  183. "portrait mode". That is, if your monitor is set to display content 
  184. vertically instead of in the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio. The Lord 
  185. of the Rings(tm), The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) II demo only supports 
  186. monitors running in 4:3 mode.
  187.  
  188. There is a known driver issue for the Nvidia GeForce FX 5000 family 
  189. of video cards using version 81.98 or older drivers that result in 
  190. broken textures on some of the game's structures. This issue has been 
  191. resolved by Nvidia, and will be addressed with the next release of 
  192. video drivers.
  193.  
  194. There is a known issue on ATI X1300, X1600, and X1800 video cards 
  195. running Catalyst 6.1 or older video drivers that result with some 
  196. shadows disappearing and reappearing when the in-game camera is rotated. 
  197. ATI is aware of this problem, and it should be addressed with the 
  198. next release of their Catalyst drivers.
  199.  
  200. You may encounter audio problems with some Creative Labs Audigy 
  201. sound cards if you select the EAX3 option in the Options menu. 
  202. Make sure you update your Audigy with the latest drivers.
  203.  
  204. If you choose to select the EAX3 option, make sure that you have 
  205. the proper speaker type selected in Windows. To do so, do the 
  206. following:
  207.  
  208.   1) In Windows, click on "Start".
  209.   2) Choose "Control Panel".
  210.   3) Choose "Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices".
  211.   4) Click on "Adjust System Volume".
  212.   5) Under "Speaker settings" click on "Advanced...".
  213.   6) Select the "Speakers".
  214.   7) From the "Speaker setup:" pull down menu, choose your applicable 
  215.      speaker setup.
  216.   8) Click on "Apply" and then "OK".

  218. If you have your screensaver enabled and it is activated while the 
  219. demo is loading the tutorial or any skirmish map, the demo will be 
  220. minimized to your Windows taskbar, which is typically located at the 
  221. bottom of your Windows desktop. If this happens, deactivate the 
  222. screensaver and maximize the game by clicking on the "Lord of the Rings(tm), 
  223. The Battle for Middle-earth II(tm) demo" button on the taskbar.

  225. Please note that Windows XP with Service Pack 1 might cause problems 
  226. with DirectX installation.
