  32. HOW TO INSTALL & UNINSTALL
  33.  
  34. SETUP.EXE is a self-extracting executable containing the program
  35. files.
  36.  
  37. Run SETUP.EXE to install Eraser. The setup program will extract
  38. the files and copy them to a desired location. You can uninstall
  39. Eraser normally via Control Panel.

  41. Eraser requires MFC Shared Libraries, MFC42.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL,
  42. (you can download them at Eraser home page).

  44. BEFORE INSTALLING

  46. Be sure to uninstall any previous version of Eraser before
  47. installing.

  49. If the setup program asks you to reboot Windows after
  50. installation, be sure to do that before running Eraser.

  54. After installing, you can open the help file (in the Eraser
  55. directory) by double-clicking the ERASER.HLP file.

  62. DESCRIPTION
  63.  
  64. Eraser consists of several utilities built on top of a powerful
  65. file wiping library capable of securely removing sensitive data
  66. from your hard drive.
  67.  
  68. Three user interfaces are included û a standard wipe utility, a
  69. convenient Explorer shell extension and a scheduler which allows
  70. you to program the erasing of unused disk space or, for example,
  71. cache files to happen regularly, at night, during your lunch
  72. break, at weekends or whenever you like.

  74. By default files are overwritten several times with carefully
  75. selected patterns, based on Peter Gutmann's paper Secure
  76. Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory, which
  77. effectively remove the magnetic remnants from the hard disk
  78. making it impossible to recover the data.

  80. For faster (and less effective) file erasing, Eraser also
  81. supports a method defined in the National Industrial Security
  82. Program Operating Manual of the US Department of Defense.

  84. There is also an option to overwrite only with pseudo-random
  85. data.
