  7. General information
  8. -------------------
  9.  
  10. The Antiviral Toolkit Pro for DOS is a complete system of protection
  11. against viruses. AVP is easy to use, it has a very large anti-virus
  12. database, which is constantly being updated to as new viruses appear.
  13.  
  14. The main features of AVP
  15. ------------------------
  16.  
  17. - AVP 3.0 scans disks, operative memory, files or sectors of disks to
  18.   detect and eliminate viruses;
  19.  
  20. - detects and deletes polimorphic viruses;
  21.  
  22. - finds and deletes the special viruses which have been written for
  23.   Windows 95;
  24.  
  25. - uses a Code Analyzer which is able to detect about 80% of unknown
  26.   viruses;
  27.  
  28. - has a mode of scanning archived and packed files (Unpacking Engine and
  29.   Extracting Engine);
  30.  
  31. - guards against infection, constantly and automatically.
  32.  
  33. - AVP scans for viruses inside E-mail databases and files.
  34.  
  35. By using MAIL.AVC the AVP anti-virus scans Microsoft E-mail databases:
  36.  
  37.  Microsoft Mail (Outlook/Exchange - .PST and .PAB files, format MS Mail)
  38.  Microsoft Internet Mail (.MBX files, format MS Internet Mail)
  39.  
  40. AVP is able to scan inside encrypted (password protected) files without
  41. requesting a password.
  42.  
  43. Current version does scan only inside personal E-mail databases (personal
  44. folders/storage), scanning inside server databases will be included in next
  45. database version.
  46.  
  47. Future releases: to scan server mail database (MS Mail) system admin has to
  48. shut down mail service - it does keep that base in monopoly mode, so no
  49. application is able to open it. To open it for scanning system admin has to
  50. write special script:
  51.  
  52.  Send/receive mail
  53.  shut down service
  54.  run AVP
  55.  restart service
  56.  
  57. While scanning AVP gets each record in E-mail database, detects and
  58. extracts attached files and scans them for viruses. There are several
  59. formats supported now:

  61.  UUEncode (both formats and all variants)
  62.  XXEncode
  63.  btoa (up to 5.0 - no Filename)
  64.  btoa 5.*
  65.  BinHex 4.0
  66.  ship
  67.  NETRUN 3.10
  68.  NETSEND 1.0 (not packed)
  69.  NETSEND 1.0C (packed)

  72. By using this database AVP scans other E-mail databases:

  74.  Eudora Pro & Lite
  75.  Pegasus Mail
  76.  Netscape Navigator Mail
  77.  JSMail SMTP/POP3 server

  79. By using this update AVP also looks for attached data (UUE, XXE, e.t.c.)
  80. and scans it for viruses inside _all_ files, not only in E-mail databases
  81. (i.e. AVP does not pay attention for file formats).

  83. Attention!
  84. ----------
  85.  
  86. 1. If MAIL_ALL.AVC database is included, AVP slows down.
  87.  
  88. 2. To detect mail files AVP searches for special strings such as "From",
  89. "To", "begin" and so on. If there are combinations of these strings, AVP
  90. reports that file as mail-file.  As a result, there might be false alarms -
  91. AVP will detect non-mail files as mail ones.

  136. 5  - All detected viruses have been deleted

  144. AVPLite - is a "lite" version of the powerful AVP anti-virus scanner.
  145. AVPLite is executed from the command line prompt only, and supports
  146. all the AVP features including virus disinfection.

  192. You can get a technical information, updates of antivirus databases and a
  193. new versions of AVP from the AVP-distributor who sold you AVP. To update
  194. a current version of AVP:
  195. - copy the new anti-virus measures (known as virus definitions) into the
  196. AVP  working catalogue;
  197. - replace the current AVP.SET file with the one you received with new
  198. updated definitions.
