  23. Although every effort has been made to ensure that
  24. use of this program will not damage your data, this
  25. cannot be guaranteed. In particular; the memory 
  26. requirements increase substantially as you explore 
  27. sites to greater depth.

  37. 2. What is SiteHog ?
  38.  
  39. SiteHog is a tool to assist the maintenance of 
  40. large and multiple Web Sites. Given an HTML file 
  41. (e.g. a Home Page) to start from, it will run down
  42. all the links from that page to other pages and 
  43. files. Referenced files will be checked for 
  44. existence and, if they are HTML files, processed 
  45. in a similar manner. 
  46.  
  47. The Site structure is displayed graphically. 
  48. Referenced files within that site (provided they 
  49. are accessible) can be opened using the (Windows)
  50. associated application, or an application selected
  51. by the user.
  52.  
  53. The HTML within the page files can be validated, 
  54. to selectable degree, and checked for 
  55. compatibility with the most common browsers.

  57. 3. Features
  58.  
  59. * Graphical display of the structure of a Web Site.
  60. * Customise the Site display by;
  61.     - display/inhibition of links of different types; 
  62.       remote, anchors, mail.
  63.     - display/inhibition of links to HTML, Image and 
  64.       Executable files.
  65.     - setting depth of exploration.
  66.     - setting depth to which automatically expand 
  67.       the Site view.
  68.     - show or hide links to common files 
  69.       (e.g. Tables of contents, gifs).
  70.  
  71. * Validate the HTML of an entire Web Site with a few clicks.
  72. * Selectable level of report from Errors, Warnings and Hints.
  73. * Check for compatibility with Netscape and Internet Explorer.
  74. * Check download time (including images) for every page.
  75. * View a summary of the inspected pages for the entire site.
  76. * Double-click an inspected file name to view the comment log.
  77. * Save comments to a file.
  78. * Click on a comment to go to the HTML concerned.
  79. * Open HTML Files in Browser(s) and/or an HTML Editor.

  81. 4. Limitations
  82.  
  83.   - It runs on Windows 95/NT only.
  84.   - Currently, SiteHog will only traverse local links 
  85.     (that is, to pages on your local disk).
  86.   - Help is in the form of an HTML Page.
  87.   - SiteHog errs on the strict side of HTML standards !
  88.   - Use of the <HTML> element without <HEAD> or <BODY> tags 
  89.     gives many, many comments.
  90.  
  91. 5. Debugging your HTML
  92.  
  93. SiteHog can (at present) only check HTML against the actual 
  94. (and proposed) Standards. In many cases browsers support 
  95. extended syntax AND semantics. You will often see SiteHog 
  96. report non-standard HTML that appears to work perfectly 
  97. well in your favourite browser. Fine, but unless you check 
  98. every other browser for that same feature you run the risk 
  99. of excluding part of your audience from your Pages. 
  100.  
  101. A particular example to be aware of is;
  102. Nested Elements. The HTML standards are quite clear on which 
  103. elements can be nested within which others, and SiteHog 
  104. attempts to check this. The nesting that browsers actually 
  105. allow, e.g. for tags such as <P>, <B>, <I> and <TABLE>, is 
  106. another matter entirely.
  107.  
  108. The best policy is to aim to minimise the number of 
  109. complaints from SiteHog and then to check how your HTML looks 
  110. with at least the Netscape and Microsoft browsers.
  111.  
  112. Beware the WYSIWYG !
  113.  
  114. Increasing numbers of WYSIWYG and object-oriented tools are 
  115. now appearing which try to hide the HTML from you. This is 
  116. OK if you wish to be blissfully unaware of the percentage of 
  117. your audience that won't see your pages in their full glory.
  118. Don't get me wrong, these tools are the future but be very 
  119. careful; few of them give any indication of which HTML 
  120. standard level they support or what tricks they may use to 
  121. produce DTP style output.
  122.  
  123. The absolute worst HTML I have found so far has been that 
  124. "generated" by certain of these tools.

  152. for long enough to decide whether or not it will be
