The local notes section is designed to help users who want to make a few notes within the InfoPop database but don't want to tie them to a particular Infopop topic...for example, sites that use InfoPop to supplement their local internet training.
Several users have asked for the ability to add local information to the database (something you just can't within a compiled help file--without resorting to parallel files, a
few DLLs and so on). Our feeble workaround for this problem is the local notes section.
You can attach small notes to any topic via WINHELP's annotate function (under Edit on
the top menu bar). Taking this a small step further, we've implemented a set of ten
'empty' topics that you can attach a note to...
Here's how we envision you might use the notes section:
First, you have 10 topics to assign small notes to. Create a table of contents and attach
it to the initial local notes screen, then attach notes to as many of the 10 topics as you need.
While WINDOWS will put a little paper clip on topics that have annotations, we have
coded our help file to immediately open the annotation window when you click on any of
the various local notes. We've also forced the 'empty' page that has the note attached
to a gray color...
A couple of caveats
1) a new version of InfoPop won't work with your notes...you'll have to move them over
via the clipboard (so don't overwrite your existing IPWIN.HLP with a new one if you have
notes to copy).
2) They're not write protected...so anyone can change or delete your notes. The actual
text is stored in the Windows directory (e.g., IPWIN.ANN)
