1. INSTALLATION & REMOVAL
To install Survive 2000, simply run the file Setup.exe and
follow the instructions. This will prompt you for a directory
(folder) to which to install and create all the necessary
files, and also create a program group.
If you want to remove Survive 2000 from your system, then you
need only delete the directory to which you installed with
all its subdirectories and files, as well as deleting the
program group. Note however, that deleting a registered
version of Survive 2000 from one machine, does not give you
the right to install it on another machine. The program will
detect this and unregister itself if you try to do so.
*************************************************************
2. CONDITIONS OF USE & DISTRIBUTION
Survive 2000 is sold and distributed as commercial software
with a free evaluation component included. You are welcome to
run the 3 Power On tests which come as free on any machine.
You may also distribute it freely to anyone you know. However
to make full use of the features of Survive 2000 you must
register with the original vendor (see the How to Register
listing under the Help menu). In registering Survive 2000 you
purchase a license to use it on a SINGLE machine. The
registration is specific to that machine and will not work on
any other. You need to separately install and register
Survive 2000 on each machine you wish to test. Site licences
are available - ask your dealer or point your web browser to
http://www.survive-2000.com for further details.
Cache Investments Pty Ltd, the developers of Survive 2000,
reserve full rights regarding the software. In particular,
you may not distribute Survive 2000 with any of its
constituent files modified or deleted. Permission to
distribute is granted on the condition that product is only
distributed in its entirety. You may not use any of the
resources contained within the Survive 2000 product for
profit without the prior consent of Cache Investments Pty Ltd
or its agents.
*************************************************************
3. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS
Survive 2000 Version 1.3 requires Windows 3.x or Windows 95
to run (it should also function under Windows 97 when it is
released). You should note the contents of DISCLAIM.TXT
(you must accept its terms before running any test). If you
do not follow the instructions, then Cache Investments Pty
Ltd will not be held responsible for any damage you may
suffer to your data. Always disconnect from a network, always
disable your security, and always back-up. If in doubt turn
it off, pull it out, or back it up as appropriate.
*************************************************************
4. SOFTNET
The SoftNET button in the Analyser is enabled when you
register. If you have a default browser installed on your
computer (you need one which can handle frames) the SoftNET
button will take you straight to the SoftNET pages loaded in
to your browser, giving you hundreds of instant links to the
latest information available about the Year 2000 problem and
PCs.
Please note, windows 3.11 does not define default environment
variables. However, this file has a '.htm' extension so it
should still load to whichever browser you have associated to
this extension. An error message will be generated, but feel
free to ignore it.
*************************************************************
5. OPENING AND SAVING RESULTS FILES
This is another feature enabled only when you register - it
is only available for the results of complete test disks.
These files, once created, can be read by any Survive 2000
program of version 1.2 or better. The data is stored in ASCII
comma delimited format, so it is easy to read into other
applications. Registered users can obtain a technical specif-
ication of the file from their dealer.
*************************************************************
6. THE CLOCKS PROGRAM
The clocks program is included by way of an extra
demonstration of the problem with the 3 system clocks.
WARNING: The CLOCKS programme allows you to change the
date and time. If you have any time-critical software
running, or any software with an expiry date that may
be affected by a change to the date or time, you should
NOT run the CLOCKS programme while these programs are
running. You must disable these programs before
running CLOCKS.
Assuming that you installed Survive 2000 in the default
C:\Survive directory, then you can run the Clocks
demonstration by doing the following:
- Exiting completely from windows to DOS
- Type:
c: <Enter>
cd\survive <Enter>
clocks <Enter>
Where <Enter> appears just press the Enter key.
To see what happens at midnight 31 December 1999, you must
set the date and time to the appropriate values. Before doing
so you should take ALL the precautions recommended above:
back-up your data, disconnect from the network where
applicable, and disable any date-dependent security.
In the top right-hand corner of the screen you will see the
instructions for changing the date and time. Press <F1> to
change the date which must be entered in "ddmmccyy" format.
Enter "31121999" and press the <Enter> key. You will notice
that the three dates change on the left of the screen. Then
press <F2> to change the time which must be entered in
"hhmmss" format. Enter "235858" and press <Enter>. This
will set the date and time to about 1 minute to midnight on
31st December, 1999. Then watch the screen to see what
happens when the time rolls over past midnight.
Don't forget to correct the date and time, by using the <F1>
and <F2> keys as described above, BEFORE you quit the
programme, which is done by pressing <Esc>.
*************************************************************
7. THE REAL TIME CLOCK PATCH
The RTC patch is a small TSR (terminate-and-stay-resident)
program which sits in the computer's memory and periodically
checks, and if necessary, fixes the RTC century.
NOTE: This program should only be installed if Survive 2000
has indicated that your machine's non-compliancy can be
corrected by the use of this patch. EXAMINE THE ANALYSER'S
RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLING
THIS PATCH.
NOTE: If you chose to install Survive 2000 in a directory
other than "Survive", you should substitute that directory
name for the directory name "Survive" in the following
instructions.
INSTALLATION FOR MACHINES RUNNING ** DOS ** ONLY.
1. Change to the Survive directory by typing
"cd\survive" and press <enter>.
2. Type "INSPATCH" and press <enter>. Read the information
displayed on the screen and continue or cancel as
appropriate. If you chose to continue, the patch
(called S2000FIX.EXE) will have been installed into the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
3. Reboot the computer by pressing the RESET button.
INSTALLATION FOR MACHINES RUNNING ** WINDOWS 3.x ** ONLY.
1. Quit Windows(TM) and return to DOS. DO NOT go to a DOS
window via the Windows DOS prompt icon!!
2. Change to the Survive directory by typing
"cd\survive" and press <enter>.
3. Type "INSPATCH" and press <enter>. Read the information
displayed on the screen and continue or cancel as
appropriate. If you chose to continue, the patch
(called S2000FIX.EXE) will have been installed into the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
4. Reboot the computer by pressing the RESET button.
INSTALLATION FOR MACHINES RUNNING ** WINDOWS95 ** ONLY
NOTE: Under Windows95 the patch must run as a task in the
background constantly and must be reinitiated every time
your machine is restarted. A shortcut to this would be to
place the executable in your startup menu. Refer to Windows
On-line Help or your Windows manual for directions on adding
items to your startup menu.
1. Using Windows Explorer, go to the Survive directory.
2. Double click on "S2000FIX.EXE". A DOS window will
appear with the following text:
S2000FIX installed.
MICROSOFT WINDOWS POP-UP PROGRAM SUPPORT
Your pop-up programe is ready to run. When
you have finished using it, press ctrl+c to
close this window and return to DOS.
3. Minimise the DOS window. DO NOT PRESS CTRL+C as this
will terminate the patch and your computer's clock
will therefore not be corrected.
4. Steps 1 to 3 will have to be repeated whenever the
machine is rebooted.
*************************************************************
8. LIMITED REGISTRATION KEY GENERATOR
If you have bought a multi-machine license, you may have also
received a program to generate a fixed number of registration
keys. Check with your dealer if you are unsure about this.
It is a simple Windows program which can be run on any
machine on which Survive 2000 has already been installed.
Thus you can put it on a floppy for easy portability if you
so wish. Note, however, that it is contrary to the licensing
agreement to use this program from more than one media, ie.
you are not allowed to copy it on to 2 separate disks and use
it on each disk.
