  19. will give you a complete printout of all the *.EXE and *.COM files on your
  20. computer. These files are the ones that make things happen by <B>COM</B><I>manding</I>
  21. or <B>EXE</B><I>cuting</I> an application.

  23. <P>Once you have the printout, your real  work starts. Basically,
  24. you will be responsible for checking with the vendor of  <I>each</I>
  25. and <I>every</I> program you have installed on your computer's hard drive.
  26. In the accompanying Softnet - from the resource disk, you can link to the
  27. vendors directly, or consult the <A HREF="http://www.mitre.org/research/cots/COMPLIANCE_CAT.html">COTS</A>
  28. listings.  You will find the majority of software vendors and their
  29. products listed in the <A HREF="http://www.mitre.org/research/cots/COMPLIANCE_CAT.html">COTS
  30. listing.</A>

  32. <P>ItÆs a time consuming situation, but the reality is you are going to
  33. have to confirm all software you will need in the year 2000 is <I>Year
  34. 2000 compatible</I>.
  35.  
  36. <P>Where possible, Survive 2000 has listed Vendor information with the
  37. file. At the very least, Survive 2000 has given you the location of every
  38. file you will need to check. The most affordable way to check for compliance
  39. is to refer to the <A HREF="http://www.mitre.org/research/cots/COMPLIANCE_CAT.html">COTS
  40. (Commercial Off The Shelf software)</A> listing and determine which of
  41. your programs are fully compliant.  If your software is not listed,
  42. go directly to the software vendor and E-mail, fax or phone them.

  45. words, the vendors are yet to release Year 2000 compliant information about
  46. their products.

  58. D: drives.  Each file ending with EXE is an executable file. By running
  59. this file, a computer program will Execute.

  61. <P>Due to the complexity and possible variances in computer software, there
  62. is no hard and fast rule on software. This is where the work starts. You
  63. are going to have to identify all the software on the hard drives and make
  64. a valued judgement as to its required ability to handle the Year 2000 and
  65. beyond.

  68. and use after the 1st  January 2000, you will then need to access
  69. the information contained in the Survive 2000  manual and contact
  70. the software vendors for information regarding the availability and costs
  71. of upgrading the currently installed software to Year 2000 compliant software.
