actual content than the minimal installation.
* Operating System: Windows 98, 95, or NT Workstation 4.0.
* Apple QuickTime for Windows version 3.0. Apple QuickTime for Windows

Installation/Uninstallation
----------------------------
Do I need to uninstall earlier versions of the GME before installing the
GME2000?
The GME2000 is a separate product from any of the earlier editions. If
you have an earlier edition of the GME, you can uninstall it from your
system if you want to free up hard drive space. However, previous
editions of the GME will not interfere with the operation of GME2000 if
you choose to keep them on your system.
Do I Have to Install Disc #2?
NOTE: If you are using the Deluxe (2-CD) version, you do not need to
install disc #2. If disc #2 is needed you will be prompted to insert it
after clicking the Swap Discs button.
Windows 98, 95, and NT Users
If the AutoPlay feature is enabled on your computer, the installation
program should automatically launch when you insert the Year 2000 GME
CD-ROM into your drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to continue
the installation. After installing the program files for GME2000 you will
be prompted to install QuickTime for Windows(R) which is produced by
Apple Computer, Inc. You must install QuickTime for Windows(R) in order
to run the Year 2000 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.
If the AutoPlay feature is disabled or if you are not using native Windows
drivers for your CD-ROM drive, the installation will not begin
automatically; you can begin the installation by going to Start, Run, and
typing D:\SETUP.EXE (assuming D is your CD-ROM drive letter) and pressing
the Enter key.
*Please Note: To install the GME2000 on Windows NT 4.0 or later
administrator privileges are required.
To use GME2000 after installation just remove the GME2000 CD from your
drive and reinsert it. If AutoPlay is enabled the program should prompt
you with a window asking you to Run or Cancel. Choose Run to launch the
GME2000. If AutoPlay is not enabled you can run the GME2000 by doing the
following: Select Programs from the Start menu on the Taskbar. Then, choose
Grolier Interactive, move over to select the Year 2000 Grolier Multimedia
Encyclopedia, and then click the Year 2000 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia
icon to start the program. Once the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia loads
and opens to the title screen, click the Start button to begin using the
GME2000.
QuickTime for Windows (R)
Note: QuickTime for Windows 3.0 was originally supplied with the GME2000
product and is the minimum version of QuickTime required in order to run
the GME2000. Although the GME2000 will work with QuickTime for Windows 3.0,
QuickTime for Windows 4.0.3 is now supplied on the GME2000 Deluxe CD-ROM
since it provides better functionality than QuickTime for Windows version 3.0.
QuickTime 4.0.3 can also be downloaded from the Apple Web site which is
http://www.apple.com.
Once the installation of the GME2000 program files concludes, you will be
prompted to install QuickTime for Windows version 4.0.3. For optimal
functionality in the GME2000, you should choose the option for a "Full
Install" when prompted about the type of QuickTime installation you would
like to do. If you do not choose to do a full installation of QuickTime
4.0.3, you could experience problems with both MIDI sound playback and with
the Panoramas found in the GME2000.
At the completion of the QuickTime installation you will be asked if you want
to view the readme file and play a sample movie. These options are normally
checked. It is better to uncheck these options and click Finish to complete
the QuickTime 4.0.3 installation.
Uninstalling GME2000 from Windows 98, 95, or NT Workstation 4.0
GME2000 can be uninstalled from Windows 98, 95, or NT by going from the
Start button on the Taskbar to Programs, Grolier Interactive, choosing
the year 2000 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, and clicking the
unInstallShield icon. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the
uninstallation process.
GME2000 and earlier versions can also be removed by going from the Start
button on the taskbar to Settings --> Control Panels --> Add/Remove
Programs, selecting the version of the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia
you wish to remove, and then clicking the Add/Remove button.
--------------------
Registering GME2000
--------------------
How to Register
When you run GME2000 for the first time, you will see a registration
screen with a "Register Now" button and a check box to disable that
screen from appearing again. If you've checked the disable option at
some point and the screen no longer appears, you can check the Display
Registration Reminder option and click OK in the Preferences dialog
available from Edit menu in GME to restore the registration reminder
screen or see the "Other Ways to Register" section below.
Once you click on the Register Now button you will be presented with
a Grolier Electronic Registration window which mentions options for
registering by Modem, Internet, Mail, Fax, and Phone. If you do not
have a modem or an Internet connnection choose to Register by Phone
(users outside the United States or Canada are not given this option).
If you wish to register you will need to complete the Grolier
Electronic Registration form. Click Next after completing this form
and another Grolier Electronic Registration window will appear
displaying information about your computer's hardware and
system software. You can either check the options for the type of
hardware and system software you are using or check the option not
to send your hardware and system software information to Grolier
Interactive. Click Next and you will see another Grolier Electronic
Registration window with the options to register by Modem, Internet,
Mail, Fax, and Phone. Select the option you wish to use for
registration. If the registration is successful you will see a window
saying that the Grolier Electronic Registration was successful.
Click the Done button to close this window.
Other Ways to Register
If you haven't registered yet, but have disabled the registration screen
in GME2000, you have two other options for registering. The first option
is to go to the Grolier Interactive entry under Programs in the Start
menu and select the Register Now option. This provides the same options
you would see if you selected Register Now from within the GME. The
second option is to fill out and mail in the registration card that
came in the box with the program. You can also register by e-mailing our
customer service department at custserv@grolier.com with your customer
information.
Possible Issues with Electronic Registration and Windows NT 4.0
If you are logged on to Windows NT 4.0 as an administrator problems may
occur if you attempt to print the registration form without the printer
being properly connected or enabled. If the printer is not enabled this
may cause the application to quit. To avoid problems printing the
registration form on Windows NT 4.0 it is recommended to be sure the
printer is properly connected and enabled prior to printing.
Secondly, when registering electronically on Windows NT 4.0 clicking
the Register by Phone and then the Go Back button may cause the
application to quit. It is recommended for NT 4.0 users to avoid using
the Go Back button where possible.
----------------
Troubleshooting
----------------
This section of the README file includes troubleshooting information on:
QuickTime for Windows(R) Issues
Distorted GME2000 Startup Screens
Multimedia Playback
Audio Playback
Exception Errors
Printing and Saving
Strange Characters in Articles
QuickTime for Windows(R) Issues
During the installation of the GME2000 you will be prompted to install
QuickTime for Windows(R) version 4.0.3. Although the GME2000 can run
on QuickTime 3.0, QuickTime 4.0.3 provides better functionality and is
now included on the GME2000 CD-ROM.
*Please Note: To install QuickTime 4.0.3 administrator privileges may be
required if you are running Windows NT 4.0 or later.
Listed below are problems that can occur if QuickTime is not installed
or if there is a QuickTime for Windows(R) conflict on your system:
* GME2000 Crashes at Startup
* QuickTime Initialization Failed Errors
* Invalid Page Faults
GME2000 Crashes at Startup
If GME2000 crashes when you attempt to Run the GME2000 click the
Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then double-click
the QuickTime icon. When the QuickTime Control Panel appears, click
the drop-down menu and select Video Settings. Click the radio button
next to Safe Mode (GDI Only).
QuickTime Initialization Failed Errors and Invalid Page Faults
If you do not choose to install QuickTime you could receive a
"QuickTime initialization failed" message possibly followed by an error
reading "GME2000 caused an invalid page fault in module GME2000.EXE"
when you attempt to launch GME2000. If you receive either of these
error messages when trying to launch GME2000, try reinstalling
QuickTime as outlined below.
Reinstalling QuickTime on a Windows 98, 95, or NT 4.0 Workstation
1. Put GME2000 Disc 1 into your CD-ROM drive.
2. If AutoPlay is enabled on your computer, a window will appear asking
you to "Run" or "Cancel". Select "Cancel". (If this window does not
appear, go to step #3.)
3. Go to the Start menu on the Taskbar, choose Run, type
D:\WIN95\QTW32\SETUP.EXE and press Enter.
Distorted GME2000 Startup Screens and Panoramas
If any of the screens that appear as the GME2000 is launched do not
appear normally try increasing the number of colors your computer is set
to display. To change the color settings, click the Start button in
Windows and go up to Settings. Open Control Panels, Display, and click
the Settings tab. Try changing the Color Palette to a higher number of
colors. If you are currently set to 256 colors try switching to either
High Color or True Color. Click Apply and restart your computer to make
this take effect.
If the Panoramas appear unclear or grainy, increase the number of colors
your video card is displaying to the next highest setting such as High
Color 16-bit or True Color 32-bit color. If increasing the number of
colors does not help try going to a lower color setting to see if this
makes a difference.
Multimedia Playback
Problems with Video, Animation, or Maps
If you experience problems with the appearance or playback of Videos,
Animations, or Maps in the GME2000 Deluxe try one of the following
suggestions:
1) Try modifying the Video Settings in the QuickTime Control Panel. To
change the Video Settings click the Start button in Windows and go up to
Settings. Open Control Panel and then double-click the QuickTime icon.
When the QuickTime Control Panel opens, click the drop-down menu and
select Video Settings. Choose Safe Mode (GDI Only) if the Options radio
button is selected or vice versa.
2) Experiment with the Color settings for your video display to find the
optimal configuration. To access the video display settings, click the
Start button in Windows and go up to Settings. Open Control Panels,
Display, and click the Settings tab. Try changing the Color Palette to
a different number of colors. If you are currently set to 256 colors try
switching to either High Color or True Color and vice versa. Click Apply
and restart your computer to make this take effect.
3) Adjusting the Desktop Area (screen resolution) may also resolve video
playback problems or the appearance of multimedia in the GME2000.
It may be helpful to try the different resolutions available to see
which one works best. Click Apply and restart your computer to make any
changes take effect.
Audio Playback
The 2000 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia contains both digital audio and
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) format audio files. MIDI
sound files are labeled as such in their captions and are generally the
National Anthems and Classical Musical Selections.
Note: If a Soundblaster 64 splash screen appears before the title screen
of the GME2000, the SoundBlaster 64 screen can be eliminated by disabling
it in the SoundBlaster preferences. This SoundBlaster screen can appear
with programs that utilize QuickTime for Windows.
Troubleshooting Audio playback problems
If the sound quality is poor try disabling SRS software which is a 3D
stereo sound utility. SRS software could appear on the tasktray and if
it appears as an icon can be disabled with a right-click. Another way
to disable this in Windows 98, 95, or NT is to press the keys CTRL - ALT
- DEL, select SRS if it appears on the Close Program List, and choose to
End Task.
No Audio in GME2000
If you do not hear any audio in the GME2000 try modifying the QuickTime
Control Panel which can be accessed by clicking the Start button on the
taskbar and going up to Settings, Control Panels, and double-clicking the
QuickTime icon.
At this point a QuickTime Settings window will open. Click the down
arrow which displays a drop down list of options. Choose Sound Out to
display options the playback device (either wavOut or DirectSound) and
also the Rate, Size, and Use options. Try experimenting with the Rate
option in particular if you are experiencing any audio playback problems
such as skips or background static. If prompted to save any changes click
OK.
Testing your Windows Audio
If you are not getting any sound in GME2000, please check to be sure
that your sound card is set up properly in Windows. Check to make sure
your speakers or headphones are plugged in and that all connections are
proper.
To test either .WAV or MIDI files in Windows 98, 95, or NT, do the
following:
1. Go to Start then to Programs.
2. Choose Accessories and choose Multimedia.
3. Click Media Player and click Device on the menu bar.
4. To test .WAV file audio choose Sound from under Device and open
a file to test.
5. To test MIDI audio choose MIDI Sequencer from under Device and
open a file to test.
If you do not hear audio with either WAV or MIDI files, then your sound
card is not working properly in Windows. Consult the sound card manual
or manufacturer for information on how to set up the sound card properly
in Windows.
Exception 10H or 32735 messages, Cannot Read From Drive X Errors,
Overflow of Hotspots, and Lockups
Exception 10H messages, Exception 32735, Cannot Read From Drive X
Messages, Overflow of Hotspots, and unexplained lockups can often
be corrected by cleaning the bottom (unprinted) side of the CD-ROM
with a soft, dry cloth from the center to the outside edge in a
straight line. Fingerprints or smudges often cause these types of
errors. Water can be used for cleaning purposes. If you have a CD
that is visibly damaged, you may need to contact Technical Support
about obtaining a replacement CD.
Older versions of video and/or CD-ROM device drivers can also cause
these types of error messages. If you have not updated your video and
CD-ROM device drivers and are experiencing these problems, you should
contact the manufacturer of your video card or CD-ROM drive to obtain
these drivers.
Unusual Fonts in GME2000 articles
GME2000 installs a special font to display certain characters within
articles. If you installed the GME2000 and then did not restart
your computer immediately after installation, the font may not have
had time to register with Windows. This may cause unusual symbols or
fonts to appear in the GME2000 article text. To resolve this, exit
the GME and go to Settings from the Start menu, select Control Panel,
then select Fonts. With the Fonts window open, press the F5 key
to refresh the Font window. A list of 8 Grolier fonts should appear
in this window. Close all windows and run GME2000 again; the special
characters should now display correctly.
If you continue to see unusual characters in the article text,
uninstall and reinstall the GME2000. Restart your computer after
installing the GME2000.

Online Features
----------------
GME2000 is both a rich reference source and a connection to the vast
resources of the Internet. Using the Online Knowledge Explorer(R)
feature you can link to two other Grolier Encyclopedias online
(Encyclopedia Americana(R) and the New Book of Knowledge(R)), access
thousands of carefully-chosen links to World Wide Web sites through
the Grolier Internet Index(R) and obtain Grolier Article Updates.
Starting from a linked article within GME2000, you can click the
Online button, which will take you to a screen that lists the types of
links available for this particular article. You will need both a modem
and an Internet account from an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
to complete the connection to the Online Knowledge Explorer(R) features.
If you are already on the Internet, you will be asked to point the
GME2000 to your Internet browser the first time you click on any of the
online buttons. Using the Browse feature provided, select the directory
and program where your Internet browser software resides, for example
c:\netscape\netscape.exe, and click OK. From that point on, clicking
any of the online buttons will launch your browser and automatically
connect you to the appropriate online screen.
Configuring the GME2000 to Work With Your Web Browser
To use the ONLINE features of GME2000 you must have a stand-alone
Web Browser. This means, that you have a separate icon for your Web
Browser from the rest of the icons for your Internet service. If you
do not have this kind of Web browser, ask your Internet service
provider how to interface your service with such a browser (Netscape
for example). Some services will not allow a stand alone browser to
automatically dial the phone and connect. If your service is like
this, then you will have to first sign onto your system (dial up)
before using the online features of GME2000.
To configure the GME2000 to work with your Web browser, do the
following:
First, start GME2000. Go up to EDIT and choose PREFERENCES. Click the
WEB BROWSER button and then the BROWSE button. The "Use Quotes"
box in the Grolier Internet Access window should be checked because
some older Web browsers require URLs appear in quotation marks
when accessing them. Use the BROWSE button to search for your Web
browser because merely typing in the path to the Web browser's
executable file and clicking OK will not save the path to the registry.
After clicking BROWSE click the down arrow to the right of LOOK IN
to scroll down and go on to your computer's hard drive. Open your C:
drive if this is where your browser is located. Open the Program
Files folder and then either the Netscape or Internet Explorer. Open
these folders further until you locate the executable file for the
program which is usually listed as Netscape or Iexplore in these
folders. Double click this file and it should appear in a box that is
labeled Grolier Internet Access which shows the path to the Web
browser. Click OK here and OK back in Preferences also to make this
take effect.
*** NOTE: Do not choose GME2000.EXE as your Web browser. This may
cause the program to crash.
Updating the Online Index
Grolier continually adds more online links to related articles.
Therefore, you will need to obtain an updated version of the Online
Index periodically. To do this, go to the Online menu in GME2000 and
click Update Online Index.
If you do NOT have an Internet account:
For those who are not yet on the Internet but who want to use the
many Grolier online features we've included AT&T WorldNet Service
software, which contains a specially customized version of Netscape
Navigator software. To install the AT&T Worldnet software select AT&T
WorldNet Service Setup from the Grolier Interactive group on your
Programs list. When asked during the installation process for a
registration code, please use the following:
