  5.           8-BIT MEMORY LANE

  9. Observe?

  11. An 11 year old boy, who goes by the
  12. name of Peter is pretending to be
  13. asleep. It's a little after 1am,
  14. December 25th 1984. His parents went
  15. to bed about half an hour ago, and
  16. he's just letting them get to sleep
  17. before the foraging begins.
  18.  
  19. We pan the camera around his dark
  20. bedroom, switch on the night vision
  21. light and watch as Peter reaches
  22. down to the bottom of the bed. His
  23. hand closes over a lump. Peter is
  24. grinning.
  25.  
  26. Jump forwards an hour. Peter has
  27. decided it's late enough to get up.
  28. He's been through his stocking,
  29. right down to the fruit and nuts
  30. that are always at the bottom. He's
  31. read his new book as best he could
  32. in the dim light coming through the
  33. gap in the curtains. The snoring has
  34. started from across the hall, so now
  35. is the time.

  37. He slips out of bed and winces as
  38. something falls to the floor. The
  39. snoring continues. He lets out a
  40. breath and creeps to the bedroom
  41. door, slowly turns the handle and
  42. peeps out onto the landing. There's
  43. his Dad, waiting for him. Sprung!
  44. His Dad smiles and tells him to have
  45. fun, but keep quiet. Peter's gone
  46. before he can finish!!
  47.  
  48. Downstairs, we can see the small
  49. lamp in the corner of the room has
  50. been left on, and there is something
  51. on the coffee table. Peter gasps as
  52. he realises what it is. Oh boy, a
  53. Commodore 64! Not a Spectrum, but a
  54. REAL computer. Real keys too, not
  55. rubber blobs. This is the best
  56. Christmas EVER! (Well, this year at
  57. least). He sits on the couch in
  58. front of the computer. There's the
  59. computer, a joystick, 6 games and a
  60. tape deck. There's a note on the top
  61. of the tape deck. He gets up to read
  62. the note.
  63.  
  64. Good morning Peter, happy Christmas.
  65. I bet it's not even 3am! Turn on the
  66. TV, then the computer. When it says
  67. READY, press SHIFT RUN/STOP and wait.
  68.  
  69. He follows the instructions to the
  70. letter. PRESS PLAY ON TAPE appears
  71. on the screen. Cool. He presses play
  72. and after a short while FOUND "XMAS
  73. MESSAGE" is displayed. A short time
  74. later, the READY prompt is showing
  75. again and the flashing cursor is
  76. waiting for input. He types RUN and
  77. presses return.

  89. WOW, this is great!

  91. After watching this for a few
  92. minutes, Peter turns the computer
  93. off and changes the tape for a 64
  94. Supersoft game called Xerons. SHIFT
  95. RUN/STOP, PRESS PLAY ON TAPE.
