  7. Thanks for your interest in the Power Utility Pak. Please read through this 
  8. document before installing the product.
  9.  
  10. About the Power Utility Pak:
  11. ===========================
  12. The Power Utility Pak is an add-in that adds dozens of new features to 
  13. Microsoft Excel. Version 2.0a is compatible with Excel 5 (running under 
  14. Windows 3.x or Windows 95) and Excel 7 (running under Windows 95).
  15.  
  16. It includes 21 general purpose utilities, 23 new worksheet functions, and 
  17. enhanced shortcut menus. When the Power Utility Pak is installed, Excel 
  18. will display a new Utilities menu and a custom toolbar (optional). 
  19.  
  20. The best way to become familiar with the Power Utility Pak is to install 
  21. it and play around with it. Complete context-sensitive on-line help is 
  22. included, and it is accessible from any dialog box. You'll find that the 
  23. new utilities and worksheet functions work exactly like the features built 
  24. into Excel. For example, the dialog box style is virtually identical to 
  25. those used in Excel. The Power Utility Pak toolbar has tool tips and a 
  26. brief explanation in the status bar. And you can even use the Function 
  27. Wizard to insert any of the new worksheet functions (the new functions 
  28. are in the "Power Utility Pak" function category).
  29.  
  30. NOTE: If you have other add-ins installed that use custom functions, the 
  31. Power Utility Pak function may not appear in the correct category. You can
  32. access these function in the All category.
  33.  
  34. One of the best features of the Power Utility Pak is that it's modular. 
  35. Only the utilities that you actually use are loaded into memory, reducing 
  36. memory consumption and system resource usage. In addition, it's easy to 
  37. remove utilities that are open in order to free up memory if you need it.

  39.                                PLEASE NOTE: 
  40.                The shareware version does not include all of 
  41.               the functionality of the registered version. See 
  42.                 "About the Shareware Version" section below.

  44. Requirements:
  45. ============
  46. The Power Utility Pak 2.0a has the following requirements:
  47.  
  48. *  Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows (running under Windows 3.1 or Windows 95)
  49.                    - or -
  50. *  Microsoft Excel 7.0 for Windows 95 (running under Windows 95 or Windows NT)
  51.  
  52. *  At least 4 megabytes of RAM (although 8-16 is more realistic)
  53.  
  54. *  Approximately 1.4 megabytes of disk space to hold the utilities
  55.  
  56. NOTE: Because it uses calls to Windows DLLs, the Power Utility Pak will not 
  57. work with Excel for Macintosh. 
  58.  
  59. Installation Instructions:
  60. =========================
  61. To get up and running quickly, please follow these instructions carefully: 
  62.  
  63. 1.    Create a new folder and name it POWER. A good location for this folder 
  64.     is a folder within your EXCEL\LIBRARY folder.
  65.  
  66. 2.    Copy all of the files from the Power Utility Pak folder to the new folder.
  67.  
  68. 3.    Start Excel.
  69.  
  70. 4.    Choose the Tools Add-Ins command from Excel's menu.
  71.  
  72. 5.    Click the Browse button, and select POWER.XLA in the folder you created in 
  73.     step 1. 
  74.  
  75. 6.    Click OK to close the Add-Ins dialog box.
  76.  
  77. The procedure outlined above will load the Power Utility Pak automatically 
  78. whenever you start Excel. If you don't want this to happen, choose the 
  79. Tools Add-Ins command and uncheck Power Utility Pak 2.0a before you exit 
  80. Excel. Please note that the utilities are loaded into memory as needed. 
  81. Therefore, there may be a slight delay when you use a utility for the first 
  82. time during an Excel session.
  83.  
  84. NOTE: You can also use the File Open command to load POWER.XLA, but this is 
  85. not recommended and there are no advantages in doing so. Using the Tools 
  86. Add-Ins command allows you to remove POWER.XLA from memory if it's no 
  87. longer needed. If you open POWER.XLA with the File Open command, the only 
  88. way to remove the add-in from memory is by executing a VBA macro with 
  89. the following statement:
  90.  
  91.     Workbooks("POWER.XLA").Close 
  92.  
  93. NOTE: If your copy of the Power Utility Pak shareware was not distributed on 
  94. a CD-ROM, the files may be ZIP'ed. If so, you'll need to unZIP the file 
  95. using PKUNZIP (or any other compatible unZIP utility). If you're reading 
  96. this file, you've already done so.

  98. Do not attempt to use the Power Utility Pak directly from a CD-ROM. 
  99. The files must be copied to your hard drive..
  100.  
  101. The Power Utility Pak 2.0 toolbar will unload itself when POWER.XLA is removed 
  102. from memory. Please be aware that the buttons on this toolbar will not 
  103. function properly unless the POWER.XLA add-in is in memory.
  104.  
  105. After installing the Power Utility Pak, you might want to browse through the Help 
  106. file first -- or simply start choosing commands from the Utilities menu or Power 
  107. Utility Pak 2.0 toolbar.

  109. Problems?
  110. =========
  111. I have made every effort to ensure that this product works reliably. If you 
  112. encounter any problems with this product, please contact me via e-mail 
  113. (john@j-walk.com). Describe the problem and tell me what version of Excel 
  114. and Windows you are using. Also, tell me if your system has anything unusual. 
  115. I will fix the problem and send you a corrected file. This applies to both 
  116. the shareware and registered versions. I typically respond to all e-mail 
  117. within 24 hours.

  119. By the way, I do not recommend that you have both the Power Utility Pak and 
  120. the Baarns Utilities installed at the same time (both products install a new 
  121. Utilities menu).

  123. About the Shareware Version:
  124. ===========================
  125. The shareware version of the Power Utility Pak is for demonstration purposes 
  126. only. It does not include all of the functionality of the registered version. 
  127. The shareware version is intended to demonstrate what the product can do. 
  128. If you like it, you should register it. 
  129.  
  130. You may use the shareware version for up to 30 days. After 30 days, you must 
  131. either register it or delete it from your hard drive. Fair enough?

  165. Registering the Software:
  166. =========================
  167. The registration fee is $39.95 (plus $4.00 shipping and handling).

  169. Registering gets you the following:

  171. 1.    The latest, complete version. This product is continually being fine-tuned 
  172.     and revised, so registering ensures that you have the latest version. 
  173.     And, of course, the registered version does not display the annoying 
  174.     messages. It also uses less memory and loads faster.
  175.  
  176. 2.    Additional utilities not found in the shareware version: The registered 
  177.     version includes the following utilities (refer to the on-line Help file 
  178.     for complete details):
  179.  
  180.     * Insert 3-D Text: Lets you create attractive three-dimensional labels 
  181.       from the text in a cell. This works particularly well with the 3D Cell 
  182.       Shading utility.
  183.  
  184.     * Reminder Alarm: Lets you set an alarm to remind you of an appointment.
  185.  
  186.     * Time Tracker: Lets you track the amount of time you spend on up to four 
  187.       different projects. Ideal for those who bill their clients by the hour.
  188.  
  189.     * Super GoTo: The ultimate worksheet navigational tool. Preview or activate 
  190.       any sheet in any open workbook.
  191.  
  192.     * Batch Printing: Lets you automate the process of loading workbooks and 
  193.       printing reports. Choose the files you want to print and go to lunch.
  194.  
  195.     * Auditing Tools: Provides useful information about the contents of a 
  196.       workbook, including a handy worksheet map and a list of all formulas.
  197.  
  198.     * Bubble Chart Wizard: Lets you convert an XY chart into a "bubble chart" 
  199.       (a chart type that's not normally available in Excel). A bubble chart lets 
  200.       you display another data dimension on a standard two-dimensional scatter 
  201.       chart.

  203.     * Power Worksheet Functions: The complete collection of 23 new worksheet 
  204.       functions that you can use in your formulas. These functions work exactly 
  205.       like those built into Excel, and can be accessed via the Function Wizard. 
  206.       The shareware version includes only eight functions. Refer to the on-line 
  207.       help for information on the complete set of functions.

  209. 3.   Installation program. This program, written in Excel VBA, will install the 
  210.      new files directly from Excel (updating your shareware version), with 
  211.      no effort on your part.
  212.  
  213. 4.   A free copy of the Power Game Pak for Excel. This is a collection of 
  214.      strategy games that you can play in Excel. The games are Video Poker, 
  215.      Yahtzee, and Bomb Hunt (a Minesweeper clone). These are standard XLS 
  216.      files, so you can examine the VBA macros to see how they work. 
  217.  
  218. 5.   Free technical support. The Power Utility Pak developer will answer 
  219.      your questions about this product using e-mail. Answers are typically 
  220.      posted within 24 hours, usually on the same day.
  221.  
  222. 6.   The opportunity to purchase the complete source code. Registered users 
  223.      can purchase the original XLS files for the Power Utility Pak for an 
  224.      additional $20.00. If you want to learn VBA programming, you'll find a 
  225.      wealth of information and useful techniques.

  227. 7.     Free upgrades.  Registered users will receive subsequent versions of the 
  228.      Power Utility Pak at no cost (shipping and handling only).
  229.  
  230. To register the Power Utility Pak, open the workbook named REGISTER.XLS and 
  231. follow the instructions. You can register by mail or phone, using a credit 
  232. card, check, or money order (U.S. funds only).
