Over Dunkirk, the clumsy turret-armed Defiant fighters had scored some successes leading to a belief that they could hold their own in fighter combat. However, No. 141 Squadron, the second Defiant squadron to be formed, was nearly wiped out a mere two weeks after being commissioned when Bf 109s of JG 51, led by the very capable Hptmn. Trautloft, bounced nine of them at low altitude over the Channel. Six Defiants went down, though the survivors thought four Bf 109s had gone down in the fight. In fact, several Bf 109s were damaged, including Trautloft's, which crash-landed back in France, but none were shot down directly. After this, Defiants were pulled off the front line.
