For the first time over the Reich, Americans were operating in force as part of the Dieppe raid. There were six Squadrons of Spitfires manned by American pilots. Three were "Eagle" squadrons which were part of the RAF, and three were actually 8th AF Squadrons equipped with Spitires on loan. 17 American pilots were shot down during the day, in exchange for confirmed kills of six Focke-Wulfs and two Do 217s. The most successful outfit was No. 133 Eagle Squadron, led by Don Blakeslee (later to become a leading USMF ace), which garnered five of the kills.
