The queen and king may both move in any direction. The queen may move any number of squares, but the king can move only one square at a time. The rook may move any number of squares, but only along a rank or file. The bishop can move any number of squares, but only along diagonals. The knight moves in an L-shaped route. The pawn can move forward one or two squares on its first move and after that only one square at a time. It captures men by moving diagonally.
