  8. Genghis Khan started his empire from Karakorum in 1206. In 1207, he united the Kirghiz and other tribes with the Mongols, shown in light yellow on the map. He then conquered the Jin, Xi Xia, Kara Kitai, and Khorezm empires. Genghis Khan's armies next took over the Kipchaks and then defeated the Russians in 1223 at the Kalka River. The dark yellow area on the map shows Genghis Khan's empire at the time of his death in 1227.
