The Toltec Indians established an empire in the central Mexican highlands. Their capital, Tollan, stood at what is now the town of Tula, north of Mexico City.<NP> Toltec influence spread throughout the central and southern regions of what is now Mexico. This influence included the use of stone pillars to support roofs, the worship of the feathered-serpent god Quetzalcoatl, and human sacrifice in religion. The Toltec built gigantic stepped pyramids topped with small temples. One of these pyramids, at Cholula, is one of the largest structures in the world. Invading tribes destroyed Tollan and the Toltec empire about 1200.
