The Ottoman Empire was a Muslim state founded in what is now Turkey. It was established by a nomadic people known as the Ottomans.<NP> The empire reached its height in the 1500's. At that time, its borders stretched to Hungary on the north, Yemen on the south, Morocco on the west, and Persia on the east. The Ottomans fought Christian Europe successfully until halted at Vienna in l683. Although the Ottomans were Muslims, they allowed Christians and Jews to practice their faiths in the empire.<NP> The Ottoman Empire collapsed during World War I (1914-1918). The nation of Turkey was formed in 1923 from the remaining territory.
