The first known pyramid was built in ancient Egypt for King Zoser about 2650 B.C. It rises about 200 feet (60 meters) and is called the Step Pyramid. Many Egyptian kings were buried in or beneath a pyramid in a chamber filled with precious objects. The Egyptians believed the body had to be preserved so the soul could live forever. Ruins of pyramids still stand in Egypt.
