Leif Ericson (A.D. 980?-1025?) was a Norse explorer. About A.D. 1000, he led what is believed to have been the first European voyage to the mainland of North America. Ericson was born in Iceland and grew up in southern Greenland. His life was recorded in long Icelandic stories called <I>sagas.</I>
