The cotton gin is a machine for removing the seeds from cotton fibers. The cotton gin shown here is a model of the one American inventor Eli Whitney developed in 1793. Simple cotton gins were first used in India during ancient times, but Whitney developed a faster, more economical machine. Whitney's cotton gin helped make the United States the world's leading cotton grower.
