  8. People left Ireland by the hundreds of thousands in the 1840's after a plant disease destroyed Ireland's potato crop. The Irish emigrants shown above are awaiting ships to take them to Canada and the United States. Most of the Irish were poor and depended on potatoes for food. About 750,000 died of starvation or disease during the famine.
