- TROUBLESHOOTING
- ----------------
-
- INSTALL AND UNINSTALL
-
- Problem: I deleted the World Book directory from my hard drive, but
- I did not use the uninstall feature. I reinstalled World Book, and
- now I am having problems with the program.
-
- Solution: You must uninstall World Book using the uninstall feature.
- To access uninstall for the World Book program:
- For Windows 95: select START; select PROGRAMS; select WORLD BOOK;
- select UNINSTALL WORLD BOOK.
- For Windows 3.1: select the PROGRAM MANAGER; select the WORLD BOOK
- group; select the UNINSTALL WORLD BOOK icon.
-
- NOTE: If you reinstall World Book, please install the program in the
- same directory in which it was installed previously. For example, if
- you originally installed World Book in "WBI98S", you would reinstall
- the program in the same directory.
-
- Problem: I am receiving a "WB98.exe is linked to missing export
- MFC40.dll" error on my Gateway, AST or Dell system. How do I bypass
- this to run World Book?
-
- Solution: This happens primarily on the above listed computers.
- However, if this has happened and you don't own a Gateway, AST or
- Dell, follow the steps below.
-
- When this problem occurs you will need to:
- 1. Copy the MFC40.dll from the C:\Windows directory and Paste it in
- the C:\Windows\System directory.
- 2. Then be sure to reboot the system for the changes to take effect.
- 3. Next, restart World Book.
-
- Please follow the steps below if you need help with this process.
- 1. In Windows 95, click the Start button, and go to Programs.
- 2. Now find the Windows Explorer (this will be towards the bottom
- of the menu) and click to open.
- 3. Find the Windows Folder on the left side of the Windows Explorer,
- and double click it.
- 4. Scroll down on the right side until you find 'MFC40.dll'.
- 5. Click MFC40.dll once to highlight it.
- 6. Go to Edit on the menu bar and click Copy.
- 7. Go back to the right side of the Windows Explorer and scroll
- down to the System folder. (This will be within the Windows
- folder). Now click the System folder once with the right
- mouse button and click Paste.
- 8. Delete the old MFC40.dll file in the Windows folder. Click the
- MFC40.dll once with the right mouse button and click Delete.
- 9. Re-start your computer to let the changes take effect.
-
-
- WIN32S AND SHARE PROBLEMS
-
- Problem: In Windows 3.1, the World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia is
- not operating properly.
-
- Solution: The World Book program will check your system and install
- Win32S if it is not detected. If your machine has an older version
- of Win32S, you may need to delete the older version and reinstall
- the World Book program.
-
- To remove the older version:
-
- 1. Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the
- SYSTEM.INI file: device=<WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\win32s\w32s.386
- 2. Remove "winmm16.dll" from the following line of the [BOOT]
- section in the SYSTEM.INI file: drivers=mmsystem.dll
- winmm16.dll
- 3. Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>
- subdirectory: W32SYS.DLL, WIN32S16.DLL, WIN32S.INI
- 4. Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S
- subdirectory. Then delete the subdirectory itself.
- 5. Restart Windows and reinstall the World Book Multimedia
- Encyclopedia.
-
- If you have previous versions of this software, please contact your
- vendor for an update.
-
- Problem: When I start World Book, I receive the message "Can't find
- OLE32.DLL."
-
- Solution: This error usually occurs when there is a previous version
- of WIN32S installed on your computer that did not include the
- OLE32.DLL. To correct this problem, uninstall WIN32S as described
- above and reinstall World Book. The installation program will
- install all of the WIN32S-related files needed to run World Book.
-
- Problem: I am encountering the WIN32S error, "MSVCRT40.DLL is not
- compatible with this version of WIN32S."
-
- Solution: To fix this problem, simply copy the MSVCRT40.DLL from the
- C:\WINDOWS directory to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
-
- In Windows 3.x:
-
- 1. Double click "Main" on the desktop.
- 2. Double click "File Manager".
- 3. Scroll down to the Windows Folder and double click it.
- 4. Find the MSVCRT40.DLL and click it once to highlight it.
- 5. On the menu bar click Edit, then click Copy.
- 6. Scroll down to the System folder and click it once to highlight
- it.
- 7. Go back to the menu bar and click Edit then Paste.
- 8. Go back to the Windows folder, click MSVCRT40.DLL once to
- highlight it.
- 9. Press the Delete key on the keyboard.
- 10. Close the File Manager and exit Windows.
- 11. Shut down the computer. Wait 10 seconds and restart.
-
- Problem: I receive Win 32s and Share.exe errors while attempting
- to install World Book in Windows 3.1x
-
- Solution:
- 1. Ensure that Share.exe is loaded into the Autoexec.bat by going
- to a DOS prompt.
- 2. Type CD \ (Backslash)
- 3. Type edit Autoexec.bat
- 4. Type c: \dos \share.exe
- 5. Save.
- 6. Restart your computer.
- 7. Delete Win32s using the following method:
- A. Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the
- SYSTEM.INI file: device=\\win32s\w32s.386.
- B. Remove "winmm16.dll" from the following line of the
- [BOOT] section in the SYSTEM.INI file:
- drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll
- C. Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>
- subdirectory: W32SYS.DLL, WIN32S16.DLL, WIN32S.INI
- D. Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S
- subdirectory. Then delete the subdirectory itself.
- E. Restart Windows and reinstall all the World Book 1998
- Multimedia Encyclopedia.
-
- This should resolve the problem.
-
- Problem: When I run the SETUP program on my Windows 3.1 computer
- system, I see an error message telling me that I cannot complete the
- installation without something called SHARE. What should I do?
-
- Solution: SHARE is a program that comes with your operating system.
- It must be running before you launch the World Book Multimedia
- Encyclopedia. It is also necessary in order for Windows to handle
- files correctly. Look for SHARE in your C:\DOS subdirectory. If this
- directory does not exist, it might be named something else. To locate
- it, do the following:
-
- 1. Start File Manager.
- 2. In File Manager, click Search and enter SHARE.EXE. Click OK.
- 3. The location of SHARE will appear in a Results window. If SHARE
- is not found, ask your computer dealer for a copy.
- 4. Within Program Manager, click File and select Run. Type SYSEDIT
- and click OK. A window will appear containing several smaller
- windows.
- 5. Click on the window titled AUTOEXEC.BAT. Make a blank line at the
- top of this file and type: C:\[directory name]\SHARE.EXE /F:5100
- /L:500. "Directory Name" is the name of the directory containing
- SHARE.
- 6. In the SYSEDIT window Select File and Exit. You will be asked if
- you want to save the file. Click YES.
- 7. Exit Windows and restart your computer. The SHARE program will
- run automatically whenever you start your system.
- 8. After your system has restarted, launch Windows and run the setup
- program for the World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia. If the
- modifications to AUTOEXEC.BAT were done correctly, you should no
- longer see the SHARE error message.
-
- An alternative to SHARE.EXE is VSHARE.386. VSHARE does not require an
- entry in your AUTOEXEC.BAT but performs the same functions as SHARE.
- VSHARE can be obtained from your computer dealer. If you have
- Internet access, you can download it from: ftp.microsoft.com. The
- file is located in the SOFTLIB/MSLFILES folder under the filename
- WW1000.EXE.
-
- VSHARE should be installed in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. After
- copying VSHARE to your hard disk, you must edit your SYSTEM.INI file.
- To do this, follow the steps below:
-
- 1. Start Windows.
- 2. In Program Manager, click File and Run.
- 3. In the Run window, type SYSEDIT and click OK. A window will appear
- containing several smaller windows.
- 4. Click on the window titled SYSTEM.INI. Search or scroll to a
- section in the file called [386enh]
- 5. In the [386enh] section, type the following on a separate line:
- device =Vshare.386
- 6. In the SYSEDIT window, select File and Exit. You will be asked if
- you want to save the file. Click YES.
- 7. Restart Windows. VSHARE.386 will be run automatically.
-
-
- MULTIPLE SESSIONS
-
- Problem: In Windows 3.1, while running the World Book program, you
- attempt to open a second session and you see an error.
-
- Solution: The World Book program in Windows 3.1 does not support
- multiple sessions.
-
-
- RESOLUTION CHANGES
-
- Problem: I changed my resolution when I had World Book open and now
- I am experiencing screen errors.
-
- Solutions: Close World Book before you change your resolution.
- Change your resolution and then restart World Book. The program will
- adapt to your new resolution.
-
-
- RAPID RESUME
-
- Problem: Videos and animations play incorrectly in Windows 95.
-
- Solution: You may need to disable the RAPID RESUME feature on your
- computer. Please see your computer manual for instructions.
-
-
- COLOUR DISTORTIONS
-
- Problem: I am seeing colour distortions when I move from one part of
- the encyclopedia to another.
-
- Solution: Increase your screen setting from 256 colours to 16-bit
- (high colour).
-
-
- RUNNING OR USING THE WORLD BOOK APPLICATION
-
- SWAPPING DISCS
-
- Problem: You see a reference to Disc 2 and you change discs. Then
- you see an error message.
-
- Solution: Wait for the "Please Insert Disc 2" prompt before you
- change discs.
-
- Problem: While in "Just Looking" I chose to insert CD 2 and received
- a CD Read Error. How do I prevent this error message from appearing
- again?
-
- Solution: The problem occurs because CD 2 was inserted before the
- program asked for it. To properly recover, simply go back to "Just
- Looking" by inserting the CD 1, selecting something from within the
- "Find" list or selecting "Clear" then "Random".
-
-
- STICKY NOTES/HIGHLIGHTER
-
- Problem: Upon reentering World Book from the desktop I continuously
- see the following error message: "Sticky Notes and Highlights may be
- corrupted." What does this mean?
-
- Solution: This occurs when a proper shutdown has not been performed.
- This message indicates that these files have been deleted. To
- prevent this, ensure that you exit the program properly.
-
- Problem: After changing the location of my Sticky Notes list, I
- place a number of Sticky Notes. The next time I open the World Book
- program, the Sticky Notes list is blank.
-
- Solution: Any changes in Options will take effect in your next
- session. To assure the Sticky Notes are retained, exit and restart
- the World Book program.
-
- Problem: I can not place more than 11 sticky notes to an article.
-
- Solution: The program allows you to enter 11 sticky notes per line
- in an article. To add more sticky notes to an article, move your
- cursor down a few lines and continue to add additional sticky notes.
-
-
- "CAN'T OPEN A DATABASE " ERROR MESSAGE
-
- Problem: I get a message "Can't open a database created with a
- previous version of your application." What should I do?
-
- Solution: If you get this message, contact World Book Technical
- Support for assistance.
-
-
- HARDWARE SPECIFIC PROBLEMS
-
- MWAVE MODEM
-
- Problem: I am having trouble using the World Book application with
- my MWAVE modem. What can I do?
-
- Solution: Problems encountered with the MWAVE card have been limited
- to the M series Aptiva PC's. The most common problem is that, with
- World Book installed, you will see an error message when trying to
- configure the ISP. To fix this problem, restart Windows. Then go
- to the MWAVE program group on the Windows 3.x desktop and open it.
- Double click the MWAVE modem icon, go to "Options" then "Settings"
- and check the box that says, "Start MWAVE". This action will
- reactivate the COM port and allow you to initialize the modem.
-
-
- HEWLETT PACKARD PRINTERS
-
- Problem: Why am I having problems printing with my HP 500 series
- printer?
-
- Solution: Install an older driver such as the 500c. Call Hewlett
- Packard and request an older driver, or download the driver from the
- Net at: http://hpcc997.external.hp.com/cposupport/indexes1/djpr.html
-
- NOTE: The HP 500C driver is a black and white driver. However, in
- Windows 95 it will enable the user to print in color. But in Windows
- 3.x the user will only be able to print in black and white. It is
- strongly recommended that the user consult Hewlett Packard when
- installing a new driver.
-
-
- PRINT PROBLEMS
-
- Problem: A picture prints half on one page and half on a second
- page.
-
- Solution: Click START at the bottom of the screen; select SETTINGS,
- and then PRINTERS; click FILE, select PROPERTIES (advanced); change
- the dithering quality to FINE.
-
- Problem: Bold characters print strangely with Kyocera printer.
-
- Solution: Use a generic HP driver (HP Laser Jet 3 emulation and HP
- Laser Jet 3 driver) to correct this problem.
-
-
- STEALTH-64 VIDEO 2001 PROBLEM
-
- Problem: When I enlarge the Distance Calculator, the globe image
- becomes distorted.
-
- When I create a timeline in the Timeline Wizard and select a picture,
- a black square appears where my selected picture should be. The
- scroll bar area, with the up and down arrows, is also blacked out.
-
- Solution: This is a video driver problem on a Stealth-64 video 2001
- board. This board uses the S3 chip set. Updating your video driver
- will fix the problem. You need to identify which chip you have using
- the S3 Chip Identify Utility and download the latest driver from the
- S3 web site. Their web site address is "www.s3.com". Go to the
- "Drivers and Utilities" section and download the S3 Chip Identify
- Utility and the updated drivers for the various chips.
-
-
- AUDIO AND VIDEO
-
- Problem: Why am I having difficulty playing sounds, animations,
- videos or simulations?
-
- Solution: World Book requires Quick Time 2.1.2. Go into the Windows
- directory and run the QT Install for Win 3.1 or the QT32 Install
- files for Win 95. This will install the necessary components to run
- your animations or simulations.
-
- Problem: Sometimes I experience choppy video and/or chipmunk sounds
- during sound play.
-
- Solution: QuickTime installs with default settings which you may
- need to change. Follow these steps:
-
- 1. Select Settings in Win 95 or Main on Win 3.1.
- 2. Select the Control Panel.
- 3. Select QuickTime.
- 4. Once in Quick Time settings, select More.
- 5. Select the Video tab.
- 6. Under Draw Method, select Video Driver NOT Video Hardware.
- 7. Select "Apply to your Settings".
-
- Problem: Other programs previously installed on my computer that
- included videos no longer play.
-
- Solution: The World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia includes QuickTime
- for Windows, version 2.1.2. Some older programs may not support this
- release of QuickTime.
-
- Problem: Videos or audios in World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia are
- stopping or flickering.
-
- Solution:
- For Windows 95: click START at the bottom of the screen;
- select SETTINGS, select CONTROL PANEL, double click QUICKTIME; select
- MORE at the bottom of the window, select the VIDEO tab at the top of
- the window; under OPTIMIZATION DRAW METHOD select VIDEO DRIVER; select
- APPLY, (the system will ask "Do you want to apply modifications?"),
- select YES. Follow the same procedures to change the settings for
- the 16-bit version of QuickTime.
-
- For Windows 3.1: double-click the CONTROL PANEL icon in the Main
- program group; double-click the QUICKTIME control panel icon; select
- MORE at the bottom of the window; select the VIDEO tab at the top of
- the window; the VIDEO PAGE will appear; select VIDEO DRIVER in the
- DRAW METHOD box; select APPLY; click CLOSE to shut down the QUICKTIME
- control panel.
-
-
- MONITOR SETTINGS
-
- Problem: I am having problems viewing my Distance Calculator or other
- media.
-
- Solution: The World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia does not support
- 24-bit colour. You must select 16-bit (or lower) colour from your
- monitor display settings. In Windows 95: open CONTROL PANEL and
- select DISPLAY. In Windows 3.1: select the Main program group and
- close Windows setup, then change SYSTEM SETTINGS. Follow the
- instructions to set up your computer's display.
-
-
- SOFTWARE REGISTRATION
-
- Software Registration is used to access and update the World Book
- Multimedia Encyclopedia Software Customer Profile and to register the
- World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia with World Book/IBM. This
- information should be kept current and registered with World Book/IBM
- on an annual basis in order to receive the benefits of being a World
- Book/IBM customer. The World Book/IBM software registration section
- contains the information and the instructions on how to register
- World Book/IBM software by modem, telephone, fax, or postal service.
-
- Problem: When I register via modem, how can I determine my
- Communication Settings?
-
- Solution: When registering your copy of World Book via modem, a
- screen appears prompting you to enter your Communication Settings.
- The IBM Software Registration Tool will automatically detect the COM
- port on which your modem is located. If you are dialing out from a
- phone number that requires you to enter a dial prefix, enter that
- number with a comma directly after it in the box named DIAL PREFIX
- (for example, many businesses require you to dial the number 9 before
- dialing the phone number so you would enter "9," in the DIAL PREFIX
- box.)
-
- Problem: When I register via fax or mail, how do I enter the
- registration number I receive from World Book/IBM?
-
- Solution:
- For Windows 95: click START at the bottom of the screen;
- select PROGRAMS, select WORLD BOOK, select SOFTWARE REGISTRATION.
- The Software Registration Tool screen will appear; select ENTER
- REGISTRATION NUMBER, click CONTINUE. Enter the registration number
- you received from World Book/IBM in the box labelled REGISTRATION #;
- click OK.
-
- For Windows 3.1: select the PROGRAM MANAGER; select the WORLD BOOK
- group; select the SOFTWARE REGISTRATION icon. The Software
- Registration Tool screen will appear; select ENTER REGISTRATION
- NUMBER, click CONTINUE. Enter the registration number you received
- from World Book/IBM in the box labelled REGISTRATION #; click OK.
-
- Problem: What is the difference between my CD-Key number (located on
- the back of the disc holder) and the registration number I receive
- when I register with World Book/IBM?
-
- Solution: The CD-Key number located on the back of the disc holder
- containing the World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia allows you access
- to the program. During installation of World Book, you will be
- prompted to enter this number in order to continue. The registration
- number you receive when you register with World Book/IBM allows you
- to connect to World Book's Updating Service to download articles and
- features that keep your encyclopedia current. Also, by registering
- with World Book/IBM, you will be able to receive information about
- new releases, upgrades, or new versions of this product. IBM will be
- able to notify you of future software offerings and promotions that
- may be of interest to IBM customers. As a registered IBM software
- customer, you may select not to receive any of these benefits.
-
- Problem: I am experiencing a corrupt screen in the Software
- Registration tool.
-
- Solution: To fix this, reboot your system after you reinstall World
- Book. Then run the Software Registration tool. This will clear up
- the corrupt screen. Also make sure you reinstall into the same
- original directory.
-
- Problem: Whenever I attempt to go online, I see the following
- message: "Unable to register: failed to launch registration
- program." As a result, I am unable to go online.
-
- Solution: You are seeing this message because there are not enough
- system resources available to launch the registration program. To
- solve this problem, register the World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia
- before you attempt to go online.
-
-
- DOWNLOADING
-
- Problem: While downloading, you disconnect the World Book program
- and it stops responding.
-
- Solution: Do not disconnect or terminate your ISP session while the
- World Book program is downloading information.
-
-
- PROBLEMS ACCESSING WEB SITES
-
- Problem: While using the World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia, I am
- unable to access web sites and I see the following message:
-
- "Unable to launch your web browser. If your web browser is running,
- close it and try your selection again. If no web browser is running,
- there may be low resources available. Close other applications and
- try your selection again."
-
- Solution: First, verify that your configured browser is still
- installed. If this does not work, go to the Web browser field of the
- Configuration dialogue box. Check if your web browser contains a long
- file name. If it does, you may need to change the path to DOS (8-
- character) files names.
-
- For example, if your command line says:
- "c:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape.exe"
-
- Change the path to:
- "c:\progra~1\netscape\Netscape.exe"
-
