- INTRODUCTION
-
- Since the introduction of the Hewlett Packard Deskjet and Deskjet Plus
- Printer, Atari Owners have found them to be a comparable inexpensive
- solution to laser printers. One of the extra features HP decided to add
- was the ability to print on standard envelopes.
-
- I wrote this program because of the lack of quality software interfaces
- for the DeskJet that are available for the Atari ST line of computers. I
- have seen a few other envelope printers, but none that I have seen allow
- multiple return addresses, full GEM functionality, or use as a .PRG or .ACC
- file.
-
- Anyway, if after using the program a while you find it useful, please make
- a donation of $5.00 to the address at the end of this doc file or use
- GENIE's Gift of Time feature by typing GIFTOFTIME at any prompt and give an
- hour's worth of time to S.Sanders2.
-
- PREPARATION FOR USE
-
- The .ARC'ed file you received should contain the following:
-
- ENVELOPE.ACC (can be renamed ENVELOPE.PRG)
- ENVELOPE.RSC
- README.DOC
-
- If you are missing some of these files, the correct ARC file can be found
- on my BBS (The GEMINI BBS, Long Beach, CA (213) 438-6812 - 300/1200/2400).
-
- First, read these DOCS well. I have tried to keep them as short as
- possible, but there are some necessary preparations to using this program.
-
- If you wish to use this program as a Desk Accessory put ENVELOPE.ACC and
- ENVELOPE.RSC in the directory where your other desk accessories are
- located (usually the root drive of your boot disk).
-
- If you wish to use this program as an executable program rename
- ENVELOPE.ACC to ENVELOPE.PRG using the 'Show Info' selection on the desktop
- or with another utility. It can be placed on the root directory of a drive
- or inside of a folder as long as it is in the same location as its .RSC
- file.
-
- Now, using any Text Editor or Word Processor, create an ASCII file
- named ENVELOPE.DAT with up to three return addresses using four lines per
- address. You may leave unused lines blank. It is important to give four
- complete lines for each address otherwise the program will interpret the
- data wrong. If the program can not find ENVELOPE.DAT, it will not print a
- return address on your envelopes.
-
- Note: The first return address in ENVELOPE.DAT will be the default that
- the program uses but you can access all three.
-
- Now, make sure ENVELOPE.DAT is placed in the same location as ENVELOPE.PRG
- or ENVELOPE.ACC whichever is applicable.
-
- INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
-
- When you start ENVELOPE.PRG or ENVELOPE.ACC a dialog box will appear that
- will allow you to enter the Destination address of your letter. You may
- enter up to four lines but blank lines will not be printed.
-
- Selecting INFO will show another dialog box which shows information about
- the program.
-
- Selecting CANCEL will return you to the desktop or close the accessory.
-
- Selecting PRINT will bring up a dialog box asking if you wish to use the
- default return address. If you answer yes, the program will use the first
- address found in ENVELOPE.DAT. If you answer no, a dialog box will appear
- which allows you to click on the return address you wish to use. When you
- have made your selection, you will be prompted to insert the envelope into
- the printer as instructed in your Deskjet manual. You may select OK to
- print or Cancel to return you to the opening screen.
-
- COMMON PROBLEMS
-
- One of the poor features of the DeskJet is that if the printer is not
- turned on upon bootup, it will not respond to the computer. If this is the
- case, the program will alert you and the only solution is to turn the
- Deskjet on and reboot.
-
- I have heard of a hardware solution to this and I will notify registered
- users when I learn more.
-
- YOUR SHAREWARE RESPONSIBILITY
-
- Shareware was designed so that users who were unsure about a piece of
- software could try it for a while and if they liked it they were supposed
- to remit payment. If you like this program and continue to use it, not
- paying your Shareware fee constitutes piracy and is against the law. While
- these statements may not bother some, I would hope that people of good
- conscience will abide by these terms.
