  1.                             FastPrint
  2.                             ---------
  3.      FastPrint  is an accelerator for use with Calamus and the  HP 
  4. LaserJet  (or  compatible) printer.  You will  have  noticed  that 
  5. Calamus takes a consistent eight minutes to print an A4 page, even 
  6. when only a small portion of the page is used.  FastPrint works by 
  7. intercepting Calamus' printer output and eliminating blank  lines. 
  8. This can result in a drastic reduction in printing times.  It also 
  9. eliminates Calamus' infuriating habit of throwing out a blank page 
  10. after every full A4 page printed.

  12.                           How to use it
  13.                           -------------
  14.      Simply copy FASTPRT.ACC into the root directory of your  boot 
  15. disk.  FastPrint  will  install  itself and  sit  quietly  in  the 
  16. background.  FastPrint  takes  up one of your six  desk  accessory 
  17. slots.
  18.      FastPrint should remain transparent to you at all  times.  It 
  19. will not interfere with your normal printing activities until  you 
  20. use  Calamus.   In  the  extremely  unlikely  case  of   FastPrint 
  21. interfering with your normal printing activities,  you may disable 
  22. and  re-enable FastPrint by selecting the 'FastPrint' option  from 
  23. the 'Desk' menu. If you should call up the 'FastPrint' option from 
  24. within Calamus,  be sure to click quickly on the alert buttons  or 
  25. Calamus  will  start  to interfere - Calamus does  not  like  desk 
  26. accessories.

  28.                            Performance
  29.                            -----------
  30.      The best case possible is an A4 page,  perhaps a letter  head 
  31. that has your logo and name at the top, and your address and phone 
  32. number  at the bottom,  for example.  Normally this would  take  8 
  33. minutes.  A similar page to this would take about 2:30 minutes,  a 
  34. 69% saving.
  35.      The  worst case is an A4 page surrounded by a border of  some 
  36. sort.  This  page has no blank lines to eliminate and printing  it 
  37. with  FastPrint  on  will  actually be  slower  than  printing  it 
  38. normally,  because  FastPrint wastes time looking for blank  lines 
  39. that don't exist.
  40.      On an average page containing text and the odd  graphic,  the 
  41. savings  will  vary between 10 and 50 percent,  depending  on  the 
  42. amount of white space that can be elimated.

  44.                              Caveats
  45.                              -------
  46.      FastPrint  is  a  very   reliable  accelerator:   I  use   it 
  47. consistently, and it has never interfered with anything I  do. The 
  48. only  time you should avoid having FastPrint active is during  the 
  49. downloading  of  soft fonts to the printer,  luckily this  is  not 
  50. something the average ST owner does often, if at all.

  52.                             The Catch
  53.                             ---------
  54.      FastPrint  is  shareware.  That means that you may  copy  and 
  55. distribute it freely and without charge.  However,  if you find it 
  56. useful  then  you should register your support to  the  author  by 
  57. sending a registration fee of £10 to the address below.  This will 
  58. earn you a copy of the latest version of FastPrint on an  original 
  59. disk, together with these instructions on a laser printed sheet.
