  2.                                     SANE
  3.  
  4.  SANE is a rough acronym for System Exclusive ANalyser, with some
  5.  rearrangement of the letters - SEAN does not have quite the same effects.
  6.  
  7.  Some manufacturers split and then send their System Exclusive in small
  8.  parcels rather than one long packet. Other manufacturers send several sets.
  9.  of different packets for different types of information all within the
  10.  context of a single System Exclusive dump. Both of these approaches tend to
  11.  make the SystemScope and some Generic Bulk Librarians like GenPatch ST more
  12.  difficult to use.
  13.  
  14.  SANE was developed in order to have advance warning of these multi-packet
  15.  dumps.
  16.  
  17.  By sending a System Exclusive dump to an Atari ST which is running SANE,
  18.  you can see how many packets are sent, together with their length in bytes.

  20.  For example, early MIDI devices like the Yamaha DX7 mark I synthesiser can
  21.  send a Bulk dump of all the voices in its internal memory, and this is sent
  22.  as a single file of 4104 bytes in this case.

  24.  In contrast, the recently released Yamaha YS100/200 synthesisers send
  25.  multi-packet dumps of up to eight separate (and different) packets for
  26.  a bulk dump of the internal memory. Each packet has its own header detailing
  27.  the type and the contents of the data which follows - they can be considered
  28.  as being eight separate System Exclusive packets.

  30.  Generally, as manufacturers have become used to the idea and applications
  31.  of MIDI, the amount of provision for dumps, messages and parameter control
  32.  has increased enormously.

  34.  SANE is part of the SYSEX series.
  35.
