Powell Peak sits between Taylor Peak and Mc Henrys Peak on the Continental Divide at an elevation of 13,208'. A ridge jutting east defines the path to Thatchtop Mountain (12,668').
This peak was named after nearby Powell Lake (downslope on the west side), named presumably for John Wesley Powell, the leader of the pioneers who first climbed nearby Longs Peak. He also was the first to navigate the Colorado River.#
