1) Place the Speed Doubler 1.0.1 Updater on your hard drive.
2) Boot your Mac with extensions off, by holding down the SHIFT key at Welcome to Macintosh.
3) Double-click to launch the Updater.
4) Select "Update". Unlock your master diskette and insert it into the floppy drive. The Updater will update the Installer and installed extensions to version 1.0.1 and prompt you to quit when completed. The previous version of the Speed Doubler Installer will be saved in a folder named "old" on the master diskette.
Speed Doubler 1.0.1 is comprised of three extensions: Speed Emulator (PowerPC only), Speed Access, and Speed Copy.
Before installing Speed Doubler, if your configuration has a PowerPC upgrade card, make sure you are booted in PowerPC mode. The installer will not install Speed Emulator if booted on a 680x0 configuration. Speed Emulator, which is applicable to the PowerPC processor only, will automatically disable itself if booting on a 680x0 configuration.
You can disable the Speed Doubler extensions by holding down the Shift key at boot.
Speed Access uses the amount of memory allocated to the disk cache in the Memory control panel. The Speed Doubler Installer automatically sets the disk cache size to 1/16th the amount of physical RAM (any additional memory due to extended memory, such as Connectix RAM Doubler or virtual memory, is not included in this calculation); if the cache amount is already larger than 1/16th the amount of RAM, it makes no adjustment. You can adjust the size of the disk cache at any time by using the disk cache setting in the Memory control panel.
The Speed Doubler Installer automatically installs the Thread Manager extension on pre-System 7.5 configurations. Thread Manager, which is built-into System 7.5, allows Speed Copy to perform multiple copies simultaneously.
Speed Emulator is designed only for the Power Macintosh. It is compatible with the PowerPC 601, 603, and 604 processors. Speed Emulator will disable itself if booting on a 680x0 configuration.
Calera WordScan OCR for PaperPort, v2.0, is not currently compatible with Speed Emulator, or any dynamic recompiling emulator. Calera is aware of the problem and working on a solution.
LaCie Silverlining (drive formatting software) users should use version 5.6.1 or later.
Thunder 7 users should use version 1.5.4 or later.
PBBlockMoveInit, an Apple extension included with Radius VideoVision software, is not compatible with Speed Emulator. Radius and Connectix are aware of the problem and a solution is pending.
Speed Emulator can be bypassed during the boot process by holding down the Shift key after Welcome to Macintosh.
Files compressed with AutoDoubler, Now Compress, Now QuickFiler (part of Now
Utilites 5.x), and SpaceSaver will become decompressed when copied.
Speed Copy will disable itself if another copy utility, such as Symantec CopyDoubler, is installed.
Standard Finder copy will activate when copying items into the System Folder, or when copying from a locked volume onto the desktop.
Speed Copy will not copy a mounted DOS disk image.
You can bypass Speed Copy by holding down the control key when copying/duplicating/empty trash; the Finder will complete the task. Speed Copy can be bypassed during the boot process by holding down the Shift key after Welcome to Macintosh.
