This chapter provides detailed information to select the destination for the new and existing fonts. Read this section at least once!
These options and functions are only available to registered users. See the chapter ‘Unlocking’ to gain access to these features.
• click the Create button
This button is only active if you have already completed the Analysis.
The Destination window opens to accept your preferences for creating new fonts and moving your existing fonts.
 
 
Font Box defaults to creating new fonts in a new Font Box folder located in the same folder as the Font Box Report. In addition, all your existing fonts are moved to a new folder titled ‘Nonessential fonts’. The following options let you modify these settings. Balloon Help is available.
• Move Font Box fonts to the System folder
Use this option if you prefer to keep all your fonts in the Fonts folder in the System folder. All the ‘clean’ fonts will be created in your existing Fonts folder.
Don’t select this option if you use Font Management software to open and close fonts. If unchecked, all the ‘clean’ fonts are created in the Font Box folder. Only select this option if you are analyzing the volume that contains your System folder.
• Don’t move fonts to the Nonessential Fonts folder
As a precaution, Font Box moves all your existing fonts to the Nonessential Fonts folder. This option leaves all your existing fonts exactly where they are. The Font Box folder is still created with all your ‘clean’ fonts. Use this option if you have many, complicated Font sets that are opened with Font Management software and you don’t want to re-create the sets right now.
• Delete Nonessential fonts
Click this option if you’re sure that you won’t need any of your existing fonts. These Nonessential fonts are moved to the Trash for you to empty at your convenience. Be sure to read ‘installing custom fonts’ below before selecting this option.
• Make sure System fonts are in the Fonts folder
This one gets a little complicated. The Macintosh System software installs nine fonts (Chicago, Courier, Geneva, Helvetica, Monaco, New York, Palatino, Symbol, and Times) in the Fonts folder in the System folder which are opened when the Mac is booted. If you move a font to another folder and re-install the System software, you are left with a duplicate font conflict. Also, many programs rely on these fonts to display properly.
If you have these fonts installed, this option will move them to the Fonts folder in the System folder. If you are missing Chicago, Geneva, or Monaco, Font Box will create them in the Fonts folder.
• Force Quit open applications
A dialog box opens asking if you want to Force Quit any running applications. As a precaution, Font Box Quits the Finder, also. Click the Force Quit button if you want to quit other applications or the Cancel button to proceed. We highly recommend that you choose Force Quit. You must choose Force Quit if you select an option which affects the System Folder.
• restart
After completion, a dialog box asks if you would like to Restart your computer. The Restart button initiates a Restart and the Cancel button returns you to Font Box. After you Quit Font Box, the Finder will automatically launch. We suggest you select the Restart option.
 
If you use Font Management software (such as Suitcase, MasterJuggler, or CarpetBag) or you received an error of too many suitcases in the Fonts folder while moving Font Box fonts to the System folder, then you need to take one last step.
• font management software users (Suitcase II, MasterJuggler, CarpetBag, etc.)
If you open the Font Box folder, you’ll notice that each suitcase contains only one font family. This is done to make it easier to manage your fonts. You should open your Font Management software and re-configure your font sets. Since there are no duplicate fonts, you can open your font sets without worrying about conflicts.
• over 128 suitcases in Font folder
The Fonts Folder in the System folder can open a maximum of 128 suitcases. If you selected ‘Move fonts to the Fonts folder’ and received a message that ‘there are too many fonts’, then Font Box created more than 128 suitcases.
You have two choices. The first is to move the fonts into another folder and use font management software to open and close the fonts. The second choice is to consolidate the fonts into less than 128 suitcases by dragging fonts out of one suitcase and into another.
• installing ‘custom’ fonts
Some programs install, and rely on, Bitmapped (screen) fonts without installing the Postscript (printer) fonts. These fonts are considered superfluous by Font Box because they are Bitmapped fonts without Postscript fonts. Therefore, if any programs complain that certain fonts are missing, you can drag them from the Nonessential Fonts folder to the Fonts folder in the System folder or open them with your Font Management software. If you deleted the Nonessential fonts, re-install the program that’s complaining. This should be the only hassle.
