Bugbears are immensely large and smelly cousins to the bogeyman. Bogeymen and bugbears are both known for raiding villages at night to look for dinner. Unlike the bogeyman, the bugbears will work in small groups and attack anything they see on the streets. Once they have what they want they will disappear into the night only to reappear again several nights later once their food supply is gone. This pattern will continue until the group of bugbears no longer feels safe, they have been killed, or until there is no more food left in the village.
Bugbears wield clubs. The wear no armor or shield.

(1570-1580)
Mothers used to use the word bugbear, and many other words, to threaten their children. "Eat your spinach or a bugbear is going to rip out your spine and drink your smashed intestines with a rusty straw." They probably didn't say exactly that, but I'm a little bored.
