- REDSHIFT WINDOWS: INSTALLATION
-
- RedShift will run directly off CD-ROM, however performance will be
- considerably enhanced if the application is copied onto hard disc (it
- occupies approximately 2 megabytes). Give RedShift as much
- memory as you can: the software requires a minimum of 2 megabytes
- of available memory. Planet images and location maps will be
- improved if 5 megabytes of RAM is available.
-
- To install RedShift open the Program Manager window, click File to
- display the File menu, and then click Run. In the Command Line box,
- type the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive, a colon, a backslash,
- and the word INSTALL (for example, type d:\install). Click OK or
- press enter
-
- Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
-
- After you have completed the installation procedure, use File
- Manager to copy the sub-directory QTW from the CD-ROM into
- the RedShift directory on your hard disc. This will improve the
- performance of QuickTime routines.
-
- RedShift uses Apple's QuickTime technology to display pictures and
- video. There are currently three versions of QuickTime for Windows.
- Each has some limitations . There are some incompatibilities with
- certain video cards.
-
- All three versions of QuickTime for Windows are included on the
- RedShift CD-ROM. RedShift will use whichever version is contained
- in the directory RedShift\QTW on your hard disk.
-
- QuickTime 1.1.1 for Windows is the latest version at the time of
- writing.
- To use QuickTime 1.1.1 for Windows, copy the QTW directory
- from the RedShift CD-ROM into the RedShift directory on your hard
- disk as above.
-
- Alternatively, to use an older version of QuickTime for Windows, you
- may copy from the RedShift CD-ROM. For QuickTime 1.0, copy
- the QTW10 directory from the RedShift CD-ROM to the RedShift
- directory on your hard disk and rename it as QTW. For QuickTime
- 1.1, copy the QTW11 directory from the RedShift CD-ROM to the
- RedShift directory on your hard disk and rename it as QTW.
- QuickTime 1.1 for Windows fixes some incompatibility problems in
- QuickTime 1.0 but it has a memory management bug that may result
- in a program crash after an extended period of viewing photographic
- images.
-
- If you do not create a RedShift\QTW directory on your hard disk,
- RedShift will use QuickTime 1.1.1, which is in the QTW directory on
- the CD-ROM.

- ACCURACY AND SPEED OF CALCULATION
-
- RedShift calculates the positions of 250,000 stars and 50,000 other
- objects with great accuracy. For most purposes the stars can be
- considered as fixed to an imaginary sphere surrounding the solar
- system at a very great distance, but for maximum accuracy, the
- proper motion of stars has to be taken into account.
-
- RedShift allows you to specify whether this additional accuracy is
- required, by a setting on the Preferences dialog, accessed from the
- File menu. RedShift is set to compute proper star motion by default.
- If you turn off this option the accuracy of star positions will be
- reduced by a very small amount. In most cases this will result in
- approximately 4% speed improvement in calculating the positions of
- stars. Planet calculations will not be effected. If you have set the
- stars filter to include all stars, and you have set a narrow viewing angle
- that increases the number of visible stars displayed, the speed
- improvement from turning off the calculation of proper star motion can
- be as much as 30%.
