REQUIREMENTS
Word Stars 1.0 requires:
Macintosh computer
System 7.0 or better
Word Stars is designed to run on any size monitor and either color or B&W
At least 1.2 Megs of free RAM (1.5 Megs preferred)
(if the application has trouble with larger files, increase the memory allotted to the program in the get info window.)
To begin Word Stars:
Launch the application by double clicking on its icon or by double clicking one of the Word Star files.
The password to access the game controls is initially 'monitor'. This can be changed from within the controls area.
Online help is available from within the application by choosing Help from the Apple Menu at any time, or by clicking on the red ? in any window where it appears.

Word Stars 1.0 is an educational word game which allows students and adults to manipulate words in one of four game modules while accumulating points toward the goal of being added to the Hall of Fame.
From the PLAYER SCREEN participants select their name from a scrolling list of players. Teachers and parents also have access from this screen to a list of controls (initial password = monitor) for deleting/changing player information and altering some of the parameters of the games.
The MAKE WORDS MODULE allows players to create as many small words as possible from a longer word or phrase of up to 30 characters. Long words can be selected from a pre-selected list or entered individually per round. Players enter words by either clicking on letters in the long word or by typing on the keyboard.
The MASTER WORDS MODULE challenges players to decipher a four-letter word by receiving clues as to what letters are correct and in the right place or correct but in the wrong location in the word. Clues can be received for a reduction in points. This module is challenging for children or adults.
The MIXED WORDS MODULE scrambles long words or phrases from the same lists as the Make Words. Players have an assignable amount of time to decipher the word and enter it in the appropriate field. Points are awarded for each word guessed.
The MATCH WORDS MODULE asks players to match words or short phrases to the given clue according to criteria set for each game. The time to find each match is also assignable.
Each time a player plays any of the modules, he/she earns points which are saved and accumulated until the player has accumulated enough points to be added to the Hall of Fame. Two Hall of Fames are included, one for Master players requiring 1000 points and one for Junior players requiring only 500 points.
Word Stars is a flexible, enjoyable, and challenging educational tool for improving verbal and written skills.
