Thousands of carefully chosen links to Internet World Wide Web sites through The Grolier Internet Index™ and to online forums through CompuServe™ are part of your new 1997 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia (GME). The GME is both a rich reference source and a connection to the vast resources contained on the Internet.
What is The Grolier Internet Index?
The Grolier Internet Index is a well-defined Internet database of Web sites that have been identified by Grolier's team of editorial, education and library experts.
How does this actually work?
Starting from a linked article on your CD-ROM, you can click the Online button located in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. This will take you to a screen that lists the types of links available for this particular article. You will need both a modem and an Internet account from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to complete the connection to The Grolier Internet Index.
If you already have an Internet account:
If you are already on the Internet, you will be asked to point the GME to your "browser" the first time you click the Online button. Using the browse feature provided, select the folder and program where your Internet browser software resides and click OK. From that point on, clicking the Online button and selecting The Grolier Internet Index will launch your browser and automatically connect you to the appropriate Grolier Internet Index screen at the Grolier Web site.
If you do NOT yet have an Internet account:
You will need to sign up with an Internet provider and install an Internet browser, such as Netscape, on your system. Be sure to test your Internet connection and verify that it works properly with your Internet Service Provider. Please call your ISP for technical support if you have any problems with your Internet installation.
CompuServe® Forum Links
The GME also has links to thousands of CompuServe forums and services. You need to be a CompuServe member to take advantage of these links. The GME CD-ROM includes a free offer and all the software necessary to join the CompuServe Information Service. To install, double-click on the "Install CompuServe" icon on the GME97 CD-ROM. Use the "Agreement" and "Serial Number" located on the "NOW GROLIER IS COMPUSERVE CONNECTED" card enclosed in the GME product box.

PARENTAL CONTROLS
Cyber Patrol is an Internet filter and access management tool that employs a simple, easy-to-use interface enabling parents to restrict their child's Internet access to certain times of day, limit the total time spent online in a day, and block access to Internet sites that they deem inappropriate. CompuServe provides access to a variety of parental controls, including Cyber Patrol, as part of their product. To employ these controls, connect to the member services area on the service.

INSTALLATION & TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
You must have a fully working Internet connection to use the Grolier Internet Index. You need the CompuServe Information Service to connect to their forums.
The first time you click the Online button and select Grolier Internet Index from the Online Links dialog box, you will be asked to choose your browser. To change your initial setting at any time afterwards, navigate to the Choose Browser option in the Edit/Preferences dialog box. Then, in either case, navigate to and select the browser application that you have installed and want to use for your Internet connection. Be sure that the file you select is the browser application rather than some other file located in the folder. This is how the GME knows what browser to use for your connection to the Grolier Internet Index.
Once you have the GME installed, your online connection working and your Preferences set, you should be ready to use the online features of the encyclopedia.
