  19. What Is BBEdit?

  21. BBEdit is a high performance text editor for the Macintosh. The purpose
  22. of a text editor is to prepare text for transport across communications
  23. links (as in an email system), processing by another program (such as a
  24. compiler, HTML renderer, or database system), and to serve for
  25. light-duty text composition tasks. In contrast to a word processor,
  26. whose purpose is to prepare documents for optimal visual presentation,
  27. the focus of a text editor is on the transformation and manipulation of
  28. text as data, rather than on manipulation of visual attributes (such as
  29. style or color).

  31. By design, BBEdit is optimized for the editing, searching,
  32. transformation, and manipulation of text. It provides an array of
  33. general-purpose features which are useful for many tasks, and includes
  34. some features which are specifically tuned to the needs of software
  35. developers and HTML authors.
