About QuarkImmedia Viewer
QuarkImmedia Viewer is a stand-alone application that lets you interact with QuarkImmedia projects over the Internet or on a local CD-ROM or hard disk. You don’t need QuarkImmedia, QuarkXPress™, or QuarkXPress Passport™ to view and interact with projects created with QuarkImmedia.
Important
To use QuarkImmedia Viewer to view projects over the Internet, you need an Internet connection. You must also have a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address; this can be either a permanent IP address or a “dynamic” IP address that is temporarily assigned to your computer each time you connect to the Internet.
Once you have QuarkImmedia Viewer on your computer, you can use the following URL (Uniform Resource Locator) to connect to a Web site created using QuarkImmedia:
http://www.quark.com/immedia
Using QuarkImmedia Viewer
After you drag-copy QuarkImmedia Viewer to your computer, double-click its icon to launch the application. Choose View -> Show Internet Controls to display the QuarkImmedia Internet Controls palette if it is hidden. To connect to an example of a Web site created using QuarkImmedia, type http://www.quark.com/immedia in the Visit field, or press the Home button on the QuarkImmedia Internet Controls palette, and press Return.
To quit out of a project, type Command-Q or F15.
To improve the performance of QuarkImmedia Viewer, select the application icon in the Finder; choose Get Info from the File menu; and increase the memory allocation for the program.
Making QuarkImmedia Viewer work with your HTML browser
QuarkImmedia Viewer can work harmoniously with a compatible HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) browser. To do so, though, both applications must be configured properly.
First configure QuarkImmedia Viewer to launch a compatible HTML browser when encountering files other than QuarkImmedia projects:
1. Choose Edit -> Preferences -> Internet to display the Internet Preferences dialog box.
2. Click Specify (next to WWW Browser) to display the Select a Browser directory dialog box.
3. Select your HTML browser and click Open.
Next, configure your HTML browser to hand off QuarkImmedia projects to QuarkImmedia Viewer automatically. To configure your HTML browser:
1. Display the browser preferences dialog box.
2. Create a new entry in the list of helper applications.
3. Give the new entry a MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) type of “application/immedia” or, if applicable, a MIME type of “application” and a MIME subtype of “immedia”.
4. Give the new entry an extension or suffix of “imd”. If applicable, give it a “description” of “QuarkImmedia”.
5. Use the “browse” or “specify” button to locate the QuarkImmedia Viewer application.
6. Choose or enter a file type of ODOC.
7. Make sure your browser is set to launch QuarkImmedia Viewer when a QuarkImmedia project is encountered, and not to save the project to disk or prompt the user for direction. In Netscape Navigator 4.0x, make sure the Application radio button is selected; in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, make sure the How to pop-up menu is set to View with Application.
Note: Currently, QuarkImmedia Viewer will launch Netscape Navigator or Communicator 3.0x or 4.0x and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0x or 4.0x. However, Netscape Navigator is the only known HTML browser for which you can successfully configure QuarkImmedia Viewer as a helper application.
Important note to America Online and CompuServe users
America Online 3.0 lets you configure your connection to work with Internet applications such as Netscape Navigator. If your connection is set up this way, you can use QuarkImmedia Viewer too. Contact America Online for details.
If you use CompuServe for Macintosh, see CompuServe’s online instructions for configuring a PPP connection, which will allow you to use Internet applications such as QuarkImmedia Viewer.
