  13. Welcome to the demo version of StartupScreen Manager,

  15. What is StartupScreen Manager?
  16. StartupScreen Manager is an utility that enables you to change the look of your Macintosh during startup.
  17. Now you could say ‘Why not using the normal StartupScreen feature built in the MacOS?’ That is because the startupscreen feature won’t display MacOS 7.5 desktop patterns if the startupscreen doesn’t cover the whole screen and because it doesn’t show the progress bar.
  18. StartupScreen Manager handles startupscreens in a complete different way. It replaces the internal startupscreen in the MacOS by a picture of it’s own, the one you choose, not only showing the progress bar and desktop pattern, but also making it faster on slower macs.
  19. This demo version will not allow you to go in other catalogs or install screens. To order the full version, check out the separate 'How to Order?' readme file.

  21. What do I need?
  22. • MacOS 7.5 or higher (7.5 required, it hasn’t been tested on higher versions)
  23. • 640x400 or bigger monitor (13” monitor or bigger or most PowerBooks with a 12.1” screen)
  24. • 256 colors or more
  25. • 8 MB of free RAM

  27. How to use it:

  47. But for those who really want it, a step-by-step manual:
  48. • First browse through the catalog with the arrows and if there is nothing you like, click ‘Select’ and choose another catalog (=folder with PICTS) and browse through that one (this feature is not included in this demo version). You can see the screen you’ve chosen on the left.
  49. • If you think you’ve found one, click ‘Show’ to see if it really is the one you want. If it isn’t, just go back to step one.
  50. • If you really want this one then click Install (thes feature is not included in the demo version). Now you will be asked to locate the system file (file with name ‘System’ in a systemfolder) you want to edit. If you don’t know where to find it: here’s a guide:

  62. This is how your hard drive’s root may look like. Anyway: the one with the smiley face (or a small computer in MacOS 7.5) is the system folder.

  75. And this (the suitcase with a mac in it) is the system file. Now you have an idea of where to find it.

  77. Now, just locate it and click OK.
  78. Everything is settled now, just restart your mac to see whether it really was the one you wanted all your life.

  80. Of course, you want to make some of yer own!
  81. The pict file should be 422 pixels by 323 pixels. Just draw in it what you want. You can use almost any paint program for it: Claris ClarisWorks 3.0 or newer, Adobe PhotoShop, Macromedia xRes. Just don’t forget to save it as a PICT file and put it in a catalog for your comfort and enjoyment.
  82. To make it even more easy, we’ve included a template for ClarisWorks with the original Mac™OS border. But, again, save it as a PICT file because else StartupScreen Manager will NOT recognise it.
