You can configure your computer and install the software you need to get on the Internet in three easy steps.
Step 1 - Install the configuration files that your computer needs to get onto the Internet. Just run the 'Configuration Installer' from the AppleOnline CD-ROM to put the preference files you need onto your Mac. Please Note: this will overwrite your existing TCP/IP and Remote Access preference files.
Step 2 - Install software to browse the world wide web, as well as send and receive email. AppleOnline supports both Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer/Outlook Express. Just use the provided installer to set up the software of your choice.
Step 3 - Go to AppleOnline's web site and sign up for your free email and dial up accounts. You can click on the provided bookmark file to take you to AppleOnline's site. Follow the 'Sign Up' link, reset your dial in and email software — you're ready to go!
Step 4 - Configure your email application to use AppleOnline. Combine the details you just created with the detailed support documents we include and it'll be a snap.
Non-PowerPC Mac Users:
As the newer versions of Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer/Outlook Express don't work with your computer, we've been forced, because of size considerations, to remove the secondary copies of IE and Netscape from this CD. Please ring our support center at 0870 744 4411 for a CD-ROM that contains versions of Netscape and Microsoft applications that are compatible with your computer.
Manual Set Up Instructions
If you'd prefer to setup your dialing software and internet settings by hand, here's a list of changes/additions you'll need to make. Please note that AppleOnline accepts no responsibility for the accuracy of these instructions or any damage that may or may not occur as a result of you following them.
All Macs that have Open Transport installed will have a 'TCP/IP' Control Panel and either a 'PPP' or 'Remote Access' Control Panel. If you don't have both of those, you'll need to install Open Transport and either Open Transport/PPP (for MacOS 8.1 and older) or the Apple Remote Access Client (for MacOS 8.5 and newer).
If You Don't Have Open Transport and/or OT/PPP or ARA Installed
As a convienience, AppleOnline provides installers for Open Transport 1.3.1 and Open Transport/PPP 1.0. The should not be installed on systems newer than 8.1. Please reinstall Open Transport and/or Apple Remote Access Client from your system CD-ROM if you have MacOS 8.5 or newer. If you have MacOS 7.1 to 8.1, you can install Open Transport 1.3.1 and Open Transport/PPP from the full AppleOnline CD-ROM. You will need to restart after each installation.
If you need these installers, you'll have to phone our Support Centre to have them send you a copy of the full CD-ROM. Call them on 0870 744 4411.
Once you have verified that you have the appropriate control panels you can proceed with setting up your computer to access AppleOnline manually. You can either follow the directions below or use the Support Centre html files that are located on this CD-ROM. The only real difference is that the html files are full of handy pictures.
Setting up the TCP/IP Control Panel
There are four settings you should modify in this Control Panel.
First, use the pop-up dialogue at the top of the control panel to change 'Connect Via:' to 'PPP.'
Second, set 'Configure:' to 'Using PPP Server.'
Third, put the following two entries in the 'Name server addr.:' area: 212.1.128.156 (hit return) 212.1.128.157.
Lastly, list the following domains in the 'Search domains:' area: appleonline.net (hit return) apple.com.
TCP/IP is now set up to work with AppleOnline.
Setting up the PPP/Remote Access Control Panel
PPP and Remote Access are really two different versions of the same control panel. There are five settings to check and possibly change here.
In the setup area, you should see the following items: two radio buttons for 'Registered User' and 'Guest', 'Name:' and 'Password:' spaces, a 'Save password' checkbox and a 'Number:' space.
Fill them out at follows:
Registered User
Name: apple
Password: apple
Save Password checked
Number: 0845 662 1042
This sets up PPP/Remote Access for use with AppleOnline. Remember — this is a temporary account that should only be used until you sign up for your own dial up and email account with AppleOnline. You can use the bookmarks provided on the AppleOnline CD-ROM to sign up with our server.
