  16. This favorite utility quickly reformats a GEnie file listing, from two
  17. lines of text per file, into one line of text per file. This enables
  18. you to load the file listing into your database program of choice,
  19. whereupon you can sort and search to your heart's content, using the
  20. powerful features of your database program, and without burning up
  21. connect time doing it. You may specify which fields are to be copied,
  22. how to separate them, and the creator signature of the output file.
  23. Your preferences are remembered between uses.

  25. Just for the record (I've had people ask), I (still) use OverVUE to
  26. manipulate my reformatted file lists.  It's really fast!  And no, I
  27. haven't upgraded to Panorama — I'm (still) waiting to accumulate
  28. enough registration fees to be able to afford it!

  34. GENIE REFORMATTER is provided to you, the User, as a copyrighted
  35. Shareware software product.  This means that you have the opportunity
  36. to try the software on your own computer before you buy (Register) the
  37. license to use the software on a permanent basis. If you use this
  38. software for more than three (3) days you are requested to purchase
  39. (Register) the software license and become a Registered User.

  41. Copyright law applies to Shareware computer software products just as
  42. it does to Commercial computer software products, and the holder of
  43. the copyright retains all rights, with only stated exceptions (see
  44. Statement of Exceptions). The principle difference between Shareware
  45. software products and Commercial software products is in the method of
  46. distribution, and the "try before you buy" principle, i.e. if you
  47. don't use the software product you don't pay for it.

  190.  SITE LICENSE AGREEMENT AVAILABLITY
  191.  ==================================

  193. If you wish to use this software on more than one computer, a site
  194. license agreement is required.  A site license is also required to use
  195. this software on a network.  A site license allows you to copy and use
  196. this software within your organization on as many computers as
  197. contracted for.  An unlimited site license allows unlimited copying of
  198. the software for internal use only. This is copyrighted software and
  199. any distribution or re-selling of the software to a third party is
  200. prohibited.

  202. A site license is distinct from a shareware license.  The site license
  203. does not allow for the continued use of other shareware from SK
  204. Hushing III.  If, in addition to the use of software via a site
  205. license, other shareware authored by SK Hushing III is also in use,
  206. then you must register said shareware with SK Hushing III.

  208. SK Hushing III is the sole owner of the software and has full power
  209. and authority to grant the site license without the consent of any
  210. other party.

  219.  USAGE HINTS
  220.  ===========

  222. First, create the file to be reformatted. While on GEnie at the prompt
  223. for the software library of your choice, start your terminal program
  224. capturing to a text file, then ask for a GEnie file listing. At press
  225. time, this would be item 2, 3, or 11 on the Software Library menu.
  226. Don't worry about any extraneous text in the captured file. GEnie
  227. Reformatter ignores any lines that don't match a special template.
  228. Once you've captured all the file listings you want, stop capturing to
  229. the text file. Continue with your GEnie session, etc. After you've
  230. logged out, then…
  231.  
  232. Run the GEnie Reformatter. Note the reminder (have you sent your
  233. registration fee yet?).
  234.  
  235. Next click on the "Preferences" button, and select your preferences. I
  236. usually have it copy the file number, name, date, size, and
  237. description, with tabs for delimiters, and EDIT for the output file
  238. creator.  BBS SysOps have a special flag available to them on the file
  239. listing, and they can set it up so that the SysOp flag appears either
  240. before or after the file number field. The preferences will remain set
  241. that way until you set them again.
  242.  
  243. Next click on the "Reformat" button, and select the file to reformat
  244. and the name of the file to create. GEnie Reformatter will default the
  245. output file name by appending “.FMT” to the input file name, but you
  246. can override this in the standard file dialog. Once you select the
  247. output filename, GEnie Reformatter will copy the file with the
  248. reformatting options you specified. If you want to reformat several
  249. files, just repeat this step until you're done.

  252.  VERSION INFORMATION (LATEST VERSION FIRST)
  253.  ==========================================

  255. Version 3.0 should run under system 7 (I don't have it -- let me know
  256. if it works), lets you select the output file name, and now recognizes
  257. files in the listing with a 1992 upload date.
  258.  
  259. Version 2.2.1 fixed a bug which caused the wrong fields to be copied
  260. under certain conditions.
  261.  
  262. Version 2.2 recognized files with a 1991 upload date.  It also allows
  263. you to create an output file with columns of data separated only by
  264. spaces (file type SDF for you Foxbase users).
  265.  
  266. Version 2.1.1 recognized files with a 1990 upload date, and also used
  267. a slightly faster conversion method.
  268.  
  269. Version 2.1 stripped leading and trailing spaces from each field, for
  270. a smaller database, and remembered your preferences for next time!
  271.  
  272. Version 2.0 was a LightSpeed™ C rewrite for speed — in fact, it was
  273. about an order of magnitude faster, and it also allowed you to specify
  274. your preferences for the reformatting. Roughly ten times faster, and
  275. one third the size, with more features. Not bad.
  276.  
  277. Version 1.0 was written in Microsoft BASIC, and automatically copied
  278. the file number, name, date, size, and description to the output file.
  279. Even though it was compiled, it was pretty slow, due to heavy use of
  280. the BASIC string functions which are none too quick. For what it did,
  281. the application size was pretty large, too. Blame the BASIC runtime
  282. library for that.
