  5. This software update is provided to enhance your existing Indeo(R)
  6. Video drivers to the latest video technology for compressing, editing
  7. and playing back video on your Intel microprocessor-based desktop
  8. computer, using Microsoft's Video for Windows* Version 1.1e. 
  9.  
  10. Indeo Video technology gives you the capability to capture and
  11. compress video in a single step using Intel's Smart Video Recorder Pro
  12. card.  It also allows you to offline compress and play back video
  13. using only software on your computer.
  14.  
  15. The ISVR Pro works with camcorders, VCRs and laser disks to capture
  16. Indeo Video.  It immediately compresses NTSC or PAL format files at
  17. 320x240, 240x180, and 160x120 pixel resolutions at up to 30 frames
  18. per second. 
  19.  
  20. In addition, the built-in scalability of Indeo technology,
  21. automatically adjusts the playback frame rate depending on your
  22. computer's performance capabilities.  This allows you to play Indeo
  23. video files on any Intel Pentium(R) or Intel486(TM) processor-based
  24. computer.

  41. Indeo Video R3.2 is an update to Indeo Video R3.1 and Video for Windows
  42. V1.1.  It provides:
  43.    
  44.  * Support for the Display Control Interface (DCI).
  45.  * Support for active palette.
  46.  * Improved visual quality.  There is significantly more foreground 
  47.    and background detail for most sequences, particularly at 15fps 
  48.    with data rates of 135KB/sec or higher.
  49.  * Improved video playback performance at low data rates.
  50.  * Improved 16-bit image quality and playback performance.
  51.  * Improved audio playback at low data rates.
  52.  * Compression and decompression of images up to 640x480 size in
  53.    4-pixel increments.  Note: 640x480x10 video with a 240KB/sec transfer 
  54.    rate, has been measured to play back at close to 10 frames per second.
  55.  * Improved software encoder performance (2 to 5 sec/frame on a Pentium 
  56.    processor system).

  59. Improvements in V3.24.01.01 over V3.23.01.01:

  61. 1. Diamond Viper Pro cards will no longer fail during DCI profiling.
  62. 2. The offline compressor is better at reaching targeted data rates.

  66. 1. Less memory is allocated during playback.
  67. 2. More tolerant of errors in the video bit stream.  Not as likely to
  68.    GPF if a bit stream error is encountered during playback.
  69. 3. Subsampling changed to minimize color bleeding.

  71. Improvements in V3.22.01.44 over v3.22.01.43:

  73. 1. Fixes a potential problem with the floating point library not being
  74.    exited correctly while compressing a file.

  97.             It plays back files created with the older
  98.             R2.1 codec.

  101. Differences from Microsoft's VfW 1.1e Update:
  102. ---------------------------------------------
  103. The Setup utility used to install this update is a modified version of
  104. the Setup utility Microsoft provides with their runtime package.  It is
  105. possible to make further changes to this program.  Microsoft used to
  106. supply a Setup Toolkit with V3.1 of the Windows SDK.  The Setup Toolkit
  107. can now be obtained from Microsoft's Download Service (MSDL) at
  108. 206-936-6735.  Look for a file called CP0982.EXE in the C/C++ section.
  109.  
  110. All of the Intel and non-Intel codecs are installed by this update.
  111. Listed below are the differences between this update and the one
  112. supplied by Microsoft:
  113.  
  114. 1. Installs R3.2 V3.24.01.01 driver rather than V3.22.1.43.
  115. 2. The Raw driver (iyvu9.dll) is updated.
  116. 3. A file called ir30.dll is installed.  See the following section
  117.    for details.
  118. 4. The R2.1 driver is renamed to ir21.dll.
  119. 5. The readme.txt and copyrite.txt files are added.  This
  120.    readme.txt file may be deleted prior to distribution.
  121. 6. The files in this update do not all fit on one 3.5" diskette.
  122.  
  123. System.ini Entries:
  124. -------------------
  125. The Setup program installs the Indeo video drivers along with the
  126. latest Video for Windows runtime.  It places the following entries
  127. in the system.ini file for the Indeo video drivers:
  128.

  135. Previously, the recommended system.ini entries for Indeo video R3.1
  136. looked as follows:
  137.

  139. VIDC.RT21=indeov.drv
  140. VIDC.YVU9=indeov.drv
  141. VIDC.IV31=indeov.drv
  142.  
  143. Indeov.drv was an "umbrella" driver that used a text file called
  144. indeo.ini to point to the various Indeo video drivers.  The indeo.ini
  145. file had the following entries:
  146.

  148. DRIVERS=IV31,RT21,YVU9
  149. [IV31]
  150. DEC=ir30.dll
  151. [RT21]
  152. DEC=ir21_r.dll
  153. [YVU9]
  154. DEC=ir21_r.dll

  156. Indeov.drv and indeo.ini are no longer used and may be deleted if desired.
  157. However, older applications, which install the Indeo video drivers, may still
  158. use indeov.drv and indeo.ini.  Since the name of the latest Indeo video driver
  159. has changed from ir30.dll to ir32.dll, this would prevent IV31 files from
  160. accessing the latest driver.  To avoid this problem, an exact copy of the
  161. latest ir32.dll file, named ir30.dll, is also installed by this setup program.
  162. It is hoped the ir30.dll file will not be used.  But if another setup program
  163. should change the system.ini entries to point to indeov.drv, then the correct
  164. driver will still be accessed through ir30.dll.  In the future, this precaution
  165. should not need to be taken.
  166.  
  167. AVI File Editors:
  168. -----------------
  169. This is a recommendation for developers of AVI file editors.
  170. To avoid unnecessary recompression, it is recommended the IV31 and
  171. IV32 video formats be treated as the same video format. This speeds
  172. up editing operations and improves video quality.  When a video editor
  173. saves an edited AVI file, the video formats of the source video frames
  174. are compared to the video format chosen for the target file.
  175. Typically, any frames not in the target format are recompressed.  If
  176. a clip contains a mixture of IV31 and IV32 frames, and the output
  177. format is IV32, it is not necessary to recompress the IV31 frames.
  178. The Indeo video R3.2 codec will play back both video formats.  
  179.  
  180. Active Palette and DCI Support:
  181. -------------------------------
  182. Video for Windows now allows applications to properly handle an external
  183. palette for playback on 8-bit displays.  Previously, the Indeo video driver
  184. could only dither to its own internal palette.  Video for Windows would
  185. further dither the video to a requested external palette.  This caused
  186. external palettes to be dithered twice which reduced video quality.
  187.  
  188. This problem was fixed by Video for Windows 1.1d along with an updated Indeo
  189. video driver.  Indeo video is now able to decompress directly to an external
  190. palette.  Indeo video can be requested to use an external palette with either
  191. of the following MCI (Media Control Interface) commands:
  192.  
  193. SETVIDEO <alias> PALETTE HANDLE TO <palette_handle>
  194. REALIZE <alias> BACKGROUND
  195.  
  196. These commands and the MCI Interface are described in Microsoft's Video for
  197. Windows 1.1 Developer's Kit.
  198.  
  199. DCI provides for faster and smoother playback of video on DCI-enabled
  200. graphics cards.
  201.  
  202. Three components are needed to enable DCI support:
  203.  
  204. 1. Video for Windows V1.1d or newer
  205. 2. The Indeo video v3.22.01.043 driver or newer
  206. 3. DCI-enabled graphics card and drivers
  207.  
  208. The first two components are provided with this update.  Contact your graphics
  209. card vendor to obtain DCI-enabled drivers for your graphics card.
  210.  
  211. Known Operating Characteristics:
  212. --------------------------------
  213. 1. The new Indeo Video R3.2 driver can play back AVI files
  214.    compressed using the older R3.0 and R3.1 drivers.  However, AVI
  215.    files created by the R3.2 software encoder cannot be played back
  216.    using the Indeo video R3.0 or R3.1 drivers.  Microsoft's Media
  217.    Player will report the error "Video not available, cannot find
  218.    'vids.iv32' decompressor."   
  219.  
  220. 2. The R2.1 driver does not display a setup dialog box from
  221.    the Control Panel.
  222.  
  223. 3. Digital Video Arts, Ltd. has an Indeo video R3.2 driver that
  224.    supports hardware playback.  Call 215-576-7920 to inquire about
  225.    their NewWorld Operating Environment.
  226.  
  227. 4. The Setup utility could fail unexpectedly at the end of installation.
  228.    If this occurs, it is usually due to low memory conditions.  Close all
  229.    other applications before running the installation.
  230.  
  231. Software Requirements:

  236. Optimum System Recomendation:                     
  237. -----------------------------
  238. For the highest image quality and playback, the following system 
  239. requirements are recommended:
  240.  
  241.  * Intel Pentium processor
  242.  * System RAM: 12+ MB
  243.  * PCI bus graphics controller with DCI-enabled drivers
  244.  * SCSI or Enhanced IDE hard drive
  245.  
  246. For best frame rate performance, put the graphics card in 8-bit
  247. color mode.  For best image quality, use 24-bit color mode.     
  248.

  254. As new Indeo video drivers are released, they will be made available
