  2. Welcome to Genius for Windows. 
  3. ------------------------------
  4.  
  5. My basic philosophy has been to make the program 'user friendly' and to use a 
  6. computer industry word 'intuitive'.  
  7. I hope I have managed to achieve that aim. 
  8. In general I have tried to avoid using computer jargon when describing Genius's 
  9. operation in the manual and the Help screens. Many people can be overwhelmed 
  10. by terms such as 'field', 'DOS', 'CPU', 'RAM' etc. when in most cases plain 
  11. English serves the purpose.  
  12.  
  13. It is assumed however, that you have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft 
  14. Windows. 
  15.  
  16. I hope you enjoy using Genius for Windows.

  20. What Can Genius for Windows Do? 
  21. -------------------------------
  22.  
  23. The main advantage of Genius over other genealogical programs is it's visual 
  24. display. Four generations of family members are displayed on the Family Tree 
  25. screen. The display includes Parents,Grandparents, one Partner, up to two 
  26. Siblings, up to four children and of course the currently selected person. 
  27.  
  28. Navigation around the tree is simple; selecting any person displayed on the 
  29. family tree with the mouse (or using the keyboard) lets you select any 
  30. person to view or edit their 
  31. information. 
  32. Alternatively you can search for and select an individual by Family Name. 
  33.  
  34. The maximum number of people that can be stored by the program is 5000. The 
  35. notes for each person have a limit of  2,000 characters (about 400 words), 
  36. although this could be further limited by available free hard disk space.  
  37. The issue of one couple can be up to 34 children and any one person can have 
  38. up to 20 partners. 
  39.  
  40. Genius uses about 500 bytes of disk space per person plus approximately 1 byte 
  41. per character for each persons notes. 
  42. (A byte is a series of bits of information used in a computer to store or 
  43. manipulate data. It is like a letter in a word, a series of letters are 
  44. combined to make an understandable word.) 
  45.  
  46. Genius Can Print: 
  47. An individually formatted data sheet for each person. 
  48. A nicely formatted Descendants Chart of up to 8 generations for any person. 
  49. A Pedigree Chart for any person displaying 4 generations of ancestors. 
  50. A complete list of all people recorded sorted by Family Name or Person 
  51. Number. 
  52. A list of all people recorded with the same Family Name.

  54. Terminology 
  55. -----------

  57. Some of the terminology used in genealogy and Genius may need explanation. 
  58.  
  59. Connect ..  
  60. The idea that all people related to each other are 'connected' in some way, ie. 
  61. as say a father, mother, sibling(s), child, grandmother, grandfather, 
  62. 5th cousin 4 times removed etc. is called a 'a connection'.  
  63. Genius is only concerned with direct relationships, the less direct relationships 
  64. are sorted out automatically. 
  65.  
  66. Disconnect.. 
  67. To break a connection, for example you may have connected a spouse to the 
  68. wrong member of a family, so you would 'disconnect' that spouse. 
  69.  
  70. Selected Person... 
  71. The person who's data is currently being worked on is known as the 'Selected 
  72. Person'. In the Family Tree display she or he is shown in the brown box.

  74. Recommended computer configuration

  77. 386 or better computer with at least 2 Mb of memory 
  78. Windows version 3.1 or higher 
  79. Enough hard disk space to store your files 
  80. (1 Mb stores about 2000 entries not including any notes) 
  81. and up to 800Kb for the program.

  111. Installation 
  112. ------------ 
  113. Place the Genius distribution disk in your floppy drive. In Windows Program 
  114. Manager select 'File' on the Menu bar at the top with your mouse then select 
  115. 'Run' on the pop down menu and type: 
  116.  
  117.     a:setup     
  118. and press [Enter] 
  119.  
  120. (You can use upper or lower case, it doesn't matter.) 
  121.  
  122. If you have put the distribution disk in drive B: type: 
  123.  
  124.     b:setup     
  125. and press [Enter] 
  126.  
  127. After a few moments of disk drive activity you will be asked where you wish to 
  128. install Genius on your hard disk.  
  129. It offers to install Genius on Drive C: in a directory called  'GENIUS'. 
  130. If you are happy with the suggested directory press 'Enter' or select the 
  131. 'Continue' button, otherwise type in the name of the directory that you want 
  132. Genius to be installed to. 
  133. Genius will then be installed on the specified directory. An extra 
  134. sub directory will be made called 'FILES' under your GENIUS directory, this 
  135. is to store the family records that Genius will generate.  
  136.  
  137. After a short time, the installation will be complete, and, if there are 
  138. no existing data files, you will be asked if you wish to install 
  139. the sample files. Respond either 'Yes' or 'No'. If you respond 'Yes' a set 
  140. of sample family files will be copied to the 'FILES' sub directory, 
  141. if you respond 'No' the installation is complete and you will be returned 
  142. to Windows Program Manager.

  144. If the installation program finds an existing set if Genius Family files 
  145. it will check and update these files. 
  146. After installation you should have the following files in your Genius 
  147. directory:   (or the sub directory you installed Genius to)     
  148.

  150.      genius.hlp  
  151.      readme.wri  
  152.      register.exe  
  153.      register.wri
  154.      whatsnew.wri  
  155.  
  156. and, if you installed the sample family files you should have the following 
  157. files in the 'FILES' sub directory under the Genius directory:   
  158. (or under the directory you installed Genius to)

  163.     genius.mce 
  164.     genius.nts

  166. NOTE: If you installed the sample files you will have to delete them before you
  167. start your own family database.  
  168. To do this exit from Genius, run File Manager, find the sub directory 'FILES' 
  169. under the directory you installed Genius to (normally C:\GENIUS) and delete 
  170. the files listed above from the sub directory  'FILES'.

  172. Screen Resolution
  173. -----------------
  174.  
  175. Genius for Windows has been optimised for screen resolutions of 600 X 800 or 
  176. higher. While it still looks great at lower resolutions, it looks better (as 
  177. does most software) at the higher resolutions.
  178. Check your manuals for instructions how to reset the Windows screen 
  179. resolution.

  182. Setting the International Short Date Format  
  183. -------------------------------------------
  184.  
  185. Genius needs this to be set correctly so it will accept date entry in the format 
  186. you prefer. 
  187. In most cases this will be already set, but if you have trouble entering dates, 
  188. it could be that the Windows International Short Date Format is incorrectly set 
  189. for your country's particular date format. 
  190.  
  191. To set or check the International Short Date Format: 
  192.  
  193. Exit from Genius if it is running. 
  194. In the Main Group of Windows Program Manager: 
  195.     Run the 'Control Panel' application. 
  196.     Select the 'International' icon. 
  197.     In the Date Format box select the 'Change...' button. 
  198.  
  199. The International Short Date Format dialog box appears.
  200. Make sure that the Short Date Format... Order is set to the date format 
  201. that you use, either MDY or DMY (Month Day Year or Day Month Year). 
  202.     Select the 'OK' button. 
  203.     Select the 'OK' button on the 'International' dialog box. 
  204.  
  205. WIN.INI will now be updated and Genius will run correctly. 
  206.  
  207. Note: Genius will not accept the format YMD. 
  208.  
  209. Using Genius for Windows 
  210. ------------------------
  211.  
  212. Genius has been designed to gently steer you through the complexities of 
  213. entering, viewing and printing data. 
  214. When you start Genius for the first time you will see a blank Family 
  215. Tree with an empty brown 'Selected Person' box.
  216. Select 'Add Person' with the mouse and a form will appear titled 
  217. 'Add the First Person'. 
  218. Enter all the information you know about the person you wish to start
  219. with on this form, pressing 'Tab' to move between the input entry boxes. 
  220. (If the family tree is your own you could start with yourself).
  221.  
  222. Select 'OK', you will be returned to the Family Tree.
  223. You can the Add Parents, Siblings, Children and Partners in any order. 
  224. To view or edit any person on the screen, click on their box to make 
  225. him or her the Selected Person, then click on the Selected Person box 
  226. (or press [Enter]) to display the Edit Form.

  228. You can then edit or view that persons information.
  229.

  231. For more information about using Genius for Windows, extensive Help 
  232. is available by pressing the [F1] key or clicking on the 'Help' button.

  235. Uninstalling Genius for Windows 
  236. -------------------------------
  237.  
  238. If you decide that Genius for Windows is not for you, remove all the files 
  239. in the Genius (or whatever you called it) directory and it's associated 
  240. \FILES sub directory. 
  241. In the WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directories, delete the files: 
  242.  
  243.     genius_d.dll 
  244.     genius_p.dll 
  245.     genius_s.dll 
  246.     geninstl.exe 
  247.  
  248. Other files in the WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM sub directories that 
  249. Genius installs when setup  
  250. are: 
  251.  
  252.     vbrun300.dll 
  253.     ddeml.dll 
  254.  
  255. BE CAREFUL  removing these files from the WINDOWS or 
  256. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directories as they may be used by other software that 
  257. you have installed. 
  258. It's generally advisable to move them to another sub directory that isn't 
  259. in the AUTOEXEC.BAT PATH statement, then run all your other programs 
  260. to make sure they operate correctly before deleting these files.

  264.       GENIUS for Windows is NOT FREE. 
  265.         ------------------------------- 
  266.  
  267.   You MUST REGISTER after the 60-day evaluation time period. 
  268.  
  269. GENIUS for Windows is a Shareware product. It is distributed through public 
  270. access channels so that prospective buyers can have the opportunity to 
  271. evaluate the product before making a decision to buy.  
  272. If you decide to use this software, then you are under both legal and moral 
  273. obligation to register it with the author.  
  274. If, after evaluating this software, you decide not to use it you are under no 
  275. further obligation. 
  276.    
  277. GENIUS for Windows is fully protected by State, Commonwealth and International 
  278. copyright laws. 
  279. To continue to use GENIUS for Windows after the 60-day evaluation time period 
  280. you must register it. 
  281.    
  282. This program may be freely copied and distributed, as long as the following 
  283. conditions are met: 
  284.  
  285. (1) No fee is charged other than a normal time usage fee required by some 
  286.     Bulletin Board Services, or a small disk duplication fee not to exceed 
  287.    $10. 
  288. (2) The program when registered and it's associated installation, help and 
  289.     documentation files are distributed in their original, unmodified form.  
  290.    
  291. This program (when registered) may not be bundled with, or transferred as 
  292. part of any package which is sold or for which any licensing fee is charged.

  300. Registering Genius for Windows only costs $55 in Australian dollars.

  303. For that you will get: 
  304. The latest version or upgrade of Genius for Windows when it becomes 
  305. available. 
  306. The right to use your registered copy of Genius for Windows on your computer. 
  307. Telephone support if you have any problems. 
  308. A proper instruction manual. 
  309. Direct access to the program (the registration notices wont appear). 
  310. The message "Genius for Windows (Unregistered Copy)" wont appear on printouts. 
  311. A warm feeling knowing you have done the right thing. 
  312.  
  313. Once you have registered (even if the 60 days have expired) you will be able to 
  314. continue from where you left off. Your data remains intact.

  319. Print out the registration form, either by printing REGISTER.WRI or by 
  320. selecting 'Print Registration Form' in the Registration window, fill it in 
  321. and post it enclosing your cheque (in Australia only), an  
  322. international postal money order or bank cheque paid in Australian dollars to an

  349. Every possible effort has been made to ensure that Genius for Windows will 
  350. run correctly, but there is no guarantee that the program will run and I 
  351. will accept no responsibility for any errors in the software, or for any 
  352. consequences of any users' actions taken or not taken as a result of 
  353. using this software. 
  354. Users are strongly advised to make appropriate backups of their software 
  355. before installing or running  Genius for Windows.

  357. After all that, in the event that registered users have any problems 
  358. installing or running the program due to a faulty distribution disk or bug, 
  359. I will either replace the program with the latest version or repair any bug 
  360. and supply an upgraded release.
  361. If unregistered users discover an unknown bug, I will, after repairing the 
  362. bug supply an upgraded evaluation release free of charge.
