Studio Professional Update V2.16
(Online Version)
This update is for all Studio V2.16 users. It mainly updates the
current Canon profiles for the color management and provides
additional support for the latest Canon printers.
If you own V2.14 or an older version of Studio, please contact
your distributor for an update. The updates are also available
for free download from the Internet (AmiNet).
As usual, because of a bug in the Commodore Installer program,
it's recommended you enable the default Topaz 8 font on your
system during installation. The installer might not show all
options during installation with certain different sized fonts.
This is a general recommendation and does not only apply to
Studio.
The update program will not alter your original Studio disks and
will update the installed Studio software. However, you do need
the first of your original Studio disk for running this install
program.

Notices for Canon BJC users
You must have a Studio CanonBJ-EC driver and CanonBJECPref program
installed in order to get the driver updated by this update disk.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Introducing with Studio V2.16 you can find a "Fit Image on Page"
menu item. You can use this menu item to automaticly fit the
wanted picture on a page. The picture size is maximized and
centered on the page with correct aspect ratio.
The corresponding ARexx command is: MAXFITIMAGE. If there was an
error, RC is set to non-zero and PRTSTUDIO_RESULT returns the
error text. Note that the VERSION command now returns 4 from
Studio.
------------------------------------------------------------------
New Canon profiles in Studio V2.16 added
Studio V2.16 now comes with many new profiles. These new profiles
are based on Canon's latest MS Windows 95 driver V3.93. Using
these profiles with Studio will give you identical colors in the
output as with a PC using the Canon Win 95 driver.
How good are Win 95 drivers adjusted? It requires much work to
get the colors in the output of the printer adjusted correctly.
So far, there is no way to generate perfect profiles automaticly.
Studio does ship with CMSScan wich is used to make profiles
on the Amiga. Sometimes the results achived using profiles based
on CMSScan are better, sometimes worse in comparison to the
current Windows 95 drivers.
You'll find that the profiles based on the Win 95 driver will give
very good output quality especialy when based on new printer
drivers and when using wide spread print media. It's easy to
understand that adjustment efforts are more focused on the usualy
used print media like plain paper or Canon's High Resolution Paper
HR 101.
Older printers are usualy not adjusted with the quality achived by
newer calibration software. That's why you'll most likely find
some Win 95 profiles for older printers to be worse compared to
the profiles generated by CMSScan on the Amiga.
But basicly things are rather simple: if you do not like the
colors in the output, make sure you did use the correct
settings/media/print head as mentioned in the profile. If you are
sure the setup of Studio was done correctly, try a different
profiles. There are usualy several profiles for various settings
and print media to choose from.
IMPORTANT: Note that the Win 95 driver can't be adjusted for the
monitor gamma like Studio. Because of this, set the Monitor gamma
to 2.1 if you want identical colors in the output compared to the
Win 95 driver. This note should help users working in a
mulitplattform environment.
All Studio profiles based on the Canon Win 95 driver are made for
the Floyd Steinberg Serpentine dither method. This dither method
is very similar to the one used by the Win 95 driver. Use the
Avail gadget in the Match...-window for a list of installed
profiles and their used dither method and print resolution.
------------------------------------------------------------------
BJC 210, 250, 240 users should use the BJC 2xx or 210 profiles
with Studio. The CanonBJC 2xx printers are basicly compatible
with each other. For instance, you can use the BJC 250 profiles
on the BJC 240. Only the photo ink profiles of the BJC 240 and
250 can not be used with the BJC 210 as this printer doesn't
support the BC 06 Photo Ink cartridge.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Canon BJC 4000, 4100, 4200, 4300, 4550, 4650 profiles are mainly
compatible to each other as long as the recommended print mode and
print resolution in the profile is supported by the printer output
module.
For instance, you can't use the Canon BJC 4xxx profiles asking for
a Fine+DMT print mode on a BJC 4200. These print modes are only
supported on the new Canon BJC 4300 and 4650 with DMT print head
BC 21e. The DMT print mode profiles are one of the rare cases
where the new BJC 4300/4650 profiles do not work on the older BJC
4xxx printers. Because of this, the profile names do end with a
uppercase D for easy identification in the Match window of Studio.
Otherwise, I can't think of a profile on a BJC 4xxx that can't be
used on any other BJC 4xxx printer.
So, check the print mode and recommended print head in the profile
comment before using it. Make sure you do have the required
settings and print head installed. This should result in very
good output.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The new Canon BJC 4300 and 4650 can print 720*360dpi. Still,
Studio is installed for 360*360dpi for these printers similar to
the MS Windows 95 driver. The reason for this is simple: these
new printers offer a feature called Drop Modulation Technique
(DMT). Using DMT Studio can control the drop size of the print
head. Results achived using DMT and 360dpi are usualy much better
than using the higher 720*360dpi resolution.
This is why the default recommendation for BJC 4300 and 4650 users
is: use 360*360dpi with DMT when possible. IMPORTANT: Make sure
you do have the proper DMT print head BC 21e (regular ink) or
BC22e (photo ink) when enabling DMT in the output configuration
window.
But if you don't like the recommendation, you can always switch to
720*360dpi and use other included profiles.

Studio Prof. History:
E = removed bug
C = changed
I = improvement
10.03.98 V2.16 E - A fault in the V2.14 and V2.15 CMS trilinear
interpolation routine could cause an overflow
in case the profile values differs greatly.
As the fault introduced is usualy minor,
the fault mainly becomes visible in sudden
color changes of a smoth gradient.
I - The gamma window for measuring the users monitor
gamma now works on 16/24 Bit screens.
I - All multilevel dither routines
(Floyd, Jarvis, Stucki, Burkes, Sierra)
are now implemented in assembler.
This causes a total 30% speed increases.
I - Added Canon BJC 80, 250, 4300, 4650 modules
I - Profiles for BJC 2xx and 4xxx printers
based on the Win 95 V3.93 drivers added.
E - SetAspect ARexx command did not work correctly
while Landscape mode was enabled.
I - Fit Image on Page menu item and ARexx command added.
C - ARexx Version command will now report "4" to
reflect added commands.
I - New monitor settings added.
I - CanonBJEC Workbench driver now supports
BJC 250/4300/4650 and DMT.
