SSERC CHEMICAL MODELLER

Arc-Chemmod is a molecular modelling software package for all Acorn
Archimedes computers including the A3000, A3020, A4000 and A5000 machines.
The only requirements are that 2Mbytes of RAM must be installed and the
machine has a Riscos operating system. The program runs in mode 15 on a
standard monitor and benefits considerably from the presence of an Arm3
cached processor. Those with multi-sync monitors where mode switching is not
automatic may need to adjust the manual height controls for the optimum
screen display.
The program allows building, displaying, manipulating and measuring of
molecular models and includes molecular mechanics routines for minimising
the steric energies of small to medium sized molecules. Several molecular
structures can be displayed and manipulated at the same time. In this
release of Arc-Chemmod, the total number of atoms displayable is limited to
500. The atom limit for energy minimsation is set at 100, as larger
structures minimise very slowly for machines lacking arithmetic coprocessor
hardware.
The software is extremely easy to set up and use, with the mouse or
trackerball allowing quick, unambiguous interaction with the graphics
display. Structures can be displayed as coloured stick models, as simple
space-filling models with covalent radii, as ball and stick models, as Van
der Waals surface space-filling models or as dot-surface models with
covalent radii. Stick and simple space-filled models can also be displayed
as red-green stereo images. Most manipulations are generally carried out on
the stick models as they are the quickest to redraw, but rotations and
translations can be carried out on the simple space-filling representation.
Atoms may be simply identified by their colours, with the default settings :
Carbon - green
Nitrogen - blue
Oxygen - red
Halogens - yellow
Hydrogen - white
Sulphur - magenta
Phosphorus - magenta
Metals - cyan
The colour of any atom or molecule can be simply changed at will.
Structures, together with colour detail, can be saved to disc for future
work and the program includes comprehensive hard-copy facilities. Structures
can also be saved as Drawfiles or sprites for further manipulation outwith
the Arc-Chemmod package.
If a set of structural coordinates is known e.g. from a crystal structure
analysis, this may be entered directly from the keyboard using the Create
New File utility.
