5. Windows 95
=============
Whiplash is designed to run optimally under DOS but can
be run from Windows 95. We have created two PIF files
that will help you run Whiplash from Windows 95 called
WHIPW and WHIPD.
WHIPW will take you to a DOS shell and disable certain
keys and screen savers (especially important in multi-player
games).
WHIPD will disable Windows altogether and will improve the
performance of the game.
6. SVGA Mode
============
Whiplash supports 256 colour 640x400 screen mode. To play the
game in this mode you MUST have VESA compatible display drivers
installed either through software or on board your video card.
7. Technical Information
========================
Whiplash features several modes for multiple players: Serial
cable, modem play, and up to 16 players via IPX-based network.
Modem Play
----------
Whiplash offers over 20 included setups for various modems. If
you experience problems setting up your modem, or your modem is
not displayed on the list included with the game, there are
several options you can try. First, most of our strings will
generally work with brand name compatible modems. For instance,
if you own a USRobotics modem that is not listed, try using the
USRobotics Sportster 14.4/28.8 setting. Unfortunately, each
modem brand has settings that differ between other brands.
Listed below is a common initialization string that may prove
helpful - put this in the INIT: column in the Player Setup.
AT&F &D2 &C1 S0=0
This string will set up the modem at it's default settings,
turns off error correction and flow control, and also makes
sure the modem does not automatically answer. If you have
a "MODEM ERROR", try consulting your manual for options
regarding disabling error correction and CTS/RTS flow control.
If you continue to have problems, please call Interplay's
Customer Service department. The phone numbers are listed
at the bottom of this text file.
Net Play
--------
Whiplash is very exciting multi-player game, especially in
full 16 player mode, but please take note of the following
tips.
You must have IPX drivers loaded before you start Whiplash
to be able to enjoy net play. If these drivers are not
loaded, you will receive a 'NETWORK ERROR'.
On any one server, up to four seperate games of Whiplash
can be played at one time. That is a total of 64 players!
Due to copy protection the Whiplash CD must be in your CD
drive at all times. In a network game only one player needs
the CD for each game. This means up to sixteen players can
play Whiplash with just one copy of the game!
You can only join games in-between races. You may not join a
championship season in progress.
Remember that Whiplash has been designed for flexibility, you
can make up your own rules. One of our favourites is what
we call 'Demolition Derby'. Select the 'head-to-head'
option for human players only, put up the difficulty level,
switch damage to high and away you go. The last player moving
is the winner.
8. Cheaters never prosper
=========================
While Whiplash was going through final testing many rumours
were started about hidden tracks, new vehicles with strange
powers and other weird stuff. I can categorically say that
these rumours are totally unfounded and no notice should be
taken of them whatsoever.
Well... OK here's one, if you change your name to REMOVE it
will remove all cheats!
Don't like that one? How about entering your name as nothing,
that is just pressing [ENTER].
A bit boring maybe? For that W I D E feeling try CINEMA.
I am sure there aren't anymore because they would have told
me, wouldn't they? Anyway check out WWW.INTEPLAY.COM for the
latest and greatest non-existant cheat codes.
9. Game Playing Tips
====================
Here are some tips to help you become a great driver.
Choosing the correct car for your driving style is one
of the most important decisions in the game, each one
has it's advantages and disadvantages. Our personal
favourites are Global because of it's high speed and
Mission because of it's great traction.
We have found that the drivers who do best are the ones
that incur the least damage. Damage slows your car down
and means you have to spend precious seconds in the pit.
Learn the tracks, use your brakes and take a smooth
line (an analog joystick helps here).
The pits are an art in themselves, the less time spent
in them the greater your chance of winning. Your first
objective is to slow down as fast as possible, the best
way to do this is to slam into one of your opponents thus
inflicting damage on him at the same time. Repair takes
place while your car is stationery so you can start your
engine before the repairs are complete.
Each computer opponent has it's own personality, look
out for Bob, he tends to drive backwards and take out
other drivers.
