3) Is Your Computer System Ready?
For this program to work correctly, all the hardware and associated
drivers must be set up correctly. There are many manufacturers for
the various components of the computer system. Please check the
following before running 5 A Day Adventures:
- The sound card is installed correctly and the right
drivers are installed. The sound card manufacturers provide
the necessary instructions, drivers and sample files to aid
installation. If you have any questions regarding the sound
card, please contact the technical support department of the
sound card manufacturer.
- The sound card must be connected to an external amplifier
or headphones. All the audio output controls, such as volume
control, must be adjusted properly.
- The drivers for the video adapter must be installed to
provide the best performance. The minimum requirement is that
the video card support 640x480 - 256 color mode. The drivers
for this mode are usually supplied by the manufacturer of the
card.
- This program is designed to run under Windows 3.1.
Windows 3.1 must be installed properly with all the supplied
fonts.
- Please run \QTW_201\README.EXE if the movies don't play
correctly on your computer. This could result from the computer
hardware you are using. This file provides a lot of information
about the QuickTime (movie) software from Apple Corporation.
- Please make sure that all the software drivers for various
components of your computer system are loaded correctly. Any
bugs in the sound card drivers or the video drivers will cause
the program to behave abnormally or even lockup your computer.
Please try to isolate the problem and get updated drivers from
the manufacturer. Here are some examples of abnormal behavior
you might observe:
1. Audio being distorted when the mouse is moved
2. Screens becoming distorted when a movie is playing
3. Getting "Out of Memory" message when the system has plenty
of memory.
4) Navigation
It's easy to discover the fun in 5 A Day Adventures. Instruct your
students to use the mouse to move the cursor until the "arrow"
becomes a "hand." When the "arrow" changes to a "hand", it indicates
a "clickable" area.
Dialog Boxes are used when the student must answer "Yes" or "No" to a
question.
The "Control Icons" across the top of a screen allow you to navigate
through the program. They are illustrated in the Jewel Case Booklet
and in the "Travel Tips" section of the program.
To quickly access a section, you may want to skip an introduction.
The program title screens may be skipped by clicking on the screen.
Introductions to sections may be skipped with a click to the "skip
intro" button that is on the status bar at the top of the screen.
5) Performance of 5 A Day Adventures
The performance of this product is dependent on the equipment that
you are using. Both the computer performance and the performance
of the CD-ROM drive are important. If your system drops audio
statements or skips in a QuickTime movie, please check the Optimal
System Requirements. If your system seems too slow or gives you an
"Out of Memory" message, you may need to make more memory available.
Try the following:
- Close other applications currently running and close windows
- Reduce the number of memory resident programs (TSRs)
- Reduce the amount of memory required by SMARTDRV.EXE if you
are using it as your harddrive cache. Please refer to your
DOS or Windows manual for more details.
- Run Windows in Standard Mode by typing WIN/S at the DOS
prompt.
6) Optimal System Requirements
Minimum Requirements: Intel 386SX-20MHz based PC with 4MB RAM, VGA
adapter capable of supporting 640x480-256 colors, CD-ROM drive with
at least 150 KB/Sec transfer rate, mouse, Windows compatible audio
card, MS-DOS, Windows 3.1.
Optimal System Requirements: The 5 A Day Adventures program will
perform better with: Intel 386 DX or better CPU, 8 MB RAM, High
Speed Video Adapter, and a Multi-spin CDROM drive (with data transfer
rates of 300 KB/Sec or more).
7) Information on Additional Support Material to Order From Dole
The Dole Food Company, Inc. provides additional material for your
students. You can order cookbooks and charts to help students keep
track of their 5 a day.
a) "Fun With Fruits & Vegetables Kids Cookbook" contains all
the recipes provided in the program. It is a 44 page
publication printed in full color.
b) "How'd You Do Your 5 Today?" refrigerator chart is a great
way to help your students count up their fruits and
vegetables to 5 each day. The Characters from the program
are provided as re-usable stickers for the chart.
To order either of these products, print the order forms by using the
"Support Materials Viewer/Printer" program mentioned at the start of
this file.
