Brackish means a mix of fresh and salt waters. This mixture takes place when salt water from the ocean mixes with an area of fresh water, such as a stream, spring or pond. A brackish lagoon is an area where the ground is very wet and in some places covered by water. It has small plants growing in its soil, but not large trees.
Importance in the Web of Life:
These lagoons are an important stopover point for migratory shore birds. They are also an important feeding area for many creatures-from the smallest organisms to large mammals.
Cool Facts:
The salt water/fresh water mix changes depending on the weather. Heavy rainfall can make the lagoon less salty, but a big storm can allow more ocean water to enter the lagoon and make it more salty.
Threats:
Filling wetlands for development and water pollution both put brackish lagoons in danger. Dangerous foreign plants such as purple loose strife can also harm them.
Where in Washington Can I See One?
The Conservancy's Foulweather Bluff Preserve has a brackish lagoon. Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor also have several lagoons that act as magnets for shore birds.
