  27. 1) CD-ROM / Video Performance Problems
  28. ================================================

  30. NOTE: To avoid damage to the CD-ROM, do not remove it from
  31. your CD-ROM drive while it is in use (usually indicated by
  32. a light on the CD-ROM drive).
  33.  
  34. You might be able to enhance video playback performance in 
  35. a number of ways:
  36.  
  37. 1.  If your computer has only 4 Megabytes of memory, you should
  38. consider purchasing an additional 4 Megabytes for a total
  39. of 8 Megabytes.  Additional memory will significantly 
  40. increase performance for all applications on your system.
  41.  
  42. 2.  Increase the amount of buffer memory that your CD-ROM 
  43. driver software uses.  Most computers communicate with the 
  44. CD-ROM drive through the Microsoft MSCDEX driver.  Such 
  45. systems can sometimes be accelerated by adding /M:32 to the 
  46. MSCDEX entry in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  See your CD-ROM 
  47. documentation for more details.

  49. 3.  Ensure that you are using the latest video driver for your 
  50. video board.  Contact your video board manufacturer for more 
  51. information.  You might also be able to get updated drivers from 
  52. CompuServe in either the Microsoft forum or in a forum managed 
  53. by your video board manufacturer.  Also see the \DRIVERS 
  54. directory on this CD-ROM for a number of Microsoft-provided 
  55. video drivers.

  57. 4.  Check Windows Setup (usually in the Main group of the 
  58. Windows Program Manager) to ensure that you are using a 256 
  59. color video driver.  Video playback is slower in both 16 color
  60. mode and any video mode with more than 256 colors.  Video 
  61. performance might also be improved by running Windows 
  62. in 640 by 480 resolution if you are currently using a higher 
  63. resolution.

  66. 2) Video Display Problems
  67. ================================================

  69. 1.  16 color mode
  70. This application runs in 16 color mode but, due to the full-motion
  71. video playback, we strongly suggest using a 256 color video mode.
  72. Many computers are factory-set to a 16 color mode although the 
  73. video board is capable of 256 colors.  The setup program should 
  74. correctly warn you if you are in 16 color mode and suggest 
  75. a remedy.

  77. 2.  ATI video boards
  78. This product is incompatible with some features of the ATI
  79. Mach32 video system.  This video board comes with a number of
  80. popular systems including most Gateway 2000 machines.  The 
  81. problem is not with the board itself but with the Mach32 video 
  82. driver software so it can be resolved in at least two different
  83. ways (note that suggestion #1 will provide the best performance):

  85. A.  Run the ATI Control Panel application that comes with your
  86. video board.  
  87.     i.  Ensure that you are running in the 256 color mode.
  88.     ii.  Click Advanced Features and ensure that the 256 
  89.         Color Palette option is turned ON.  See the 
  90.         ATI documentation for more details.
  91.  
  92. B.  From the Windows Setup application, choose a different video 
  93. driver such as the 8514/a driver.  See your ATI documentation 
  94. for more details.

  97. 3) Audio Problems
  98. ================================================

  100. This application requires that an MPC-compatible sound board 
  101. is installed in order to play sound.  It will not function with
  102. software that uses the computer's internal speaker to generate 
  103. sound (such as "PC Speaker").  Such software will usually
  104. not play any sounds but could cause your system to crash.
  105.  
  106. To resolve other audio problems:
  107.  
  108. 1.  Make sure that the volume for your speakers is set to an 
  109. audible level.
  110.  
  111. 2.  Your sound board may be set up incorrectly if you still do not 
  112. hear any audio.  Check to see that the audio driver that came
  113. with your sound board is installed correctly and, if necessary, 
  114. reinstall it.  See the documentation that came with your sound
  115. board for more details.

  119. 4) "Out of Memory" Problems
  120. ================================================
  121.  
  122. This application uses your computer's memory to display 
  123. pictures and video.  Performance will be degraded if your system
  124. does not have enough free memory.  If you receive Out-Of-Memory 
  125. errors, you probably do not have enough free memory. Consider 
  126. doing the following:
  127.  
  128. 1.  Close all unnecessary applications.
  129.  
  130. 2.  If you are running Windows in Enhanced mode (the default 
  131. mode if you are running Windows on a 386 or better machine), 
  132. create a permanent swap file on your hard disk.  See your 
  133. Windows documentation details.

  137. 5) Windows NT
  138. ================================================
  139. The Microsoft Video for Windows drivers that this 
  140. product uses may run on Microsoft Windows NT 
  141. version 3.5 or later.  If they do not, you will 
  142. need to run this product on Microsoft Windows 3.x.
