Important Notes for the Installation ------------------------------------ The installation should always be done on an antistatic work place with an earthed mat on the table and earthed wrist bands. The person undertaking the installation should be well experienced in handling CMOS components. Never take out the Golden Gate PCB of its antistatic bag or install it, if it is not an antistatic work place and if the person taking it out is not pretected from electrical discharge by wearing earthed wrist bands. If these instructions are not observed the, user takes the risk of damaging Golden Gate. Conseils Importants pour l'Installation: ---------------------------------------- Le montage devrait se faire obligatoirement sur une plan de travail antistatique (dessous de table reli la terre et poignets d'isolation). La personne faisant ce travail devrait avoir de bonnes connaissances dans la manipulation des composants CMOS. Ne jamais sortir la carte Golden Gate de sa poche de protection antistatique et l'installer, autrement que sur un poste de travail antistatique, et en tant prot par des poignets d'isolation contre les charges statiques. Si ces pr cautions ne sont pas prises, vous prenez le risque d'endommager ou truire les composants CMOS de Golden Gate. Now remove the 5 screws connecting the upper part of the Amiga case with the lower part with the Phillips head screwdriver and store them in a safe place. One screw is at the back and two screw each are on the left and the right side in the lower part. Carefully push forward the upper part of the case and lift it at the same time. Please make sure that the upper part of the case does not become entangled with cables in the interior of the Amiga and thus inardvertently pull them out. Put the upper part of the case in a safe place. Golden Gate can be plugged into one of the bridge-slots of the Amiga. Before Golden Gate can be plugged in, the metal bracket of the corresponding bridge-slot which closes off the Amiga case at the back must be removed. Take out the corresponding screw with the Phillips head screwdriver and remove the metal bracket. Store the screw and the metal bracket in a safe place. Now take Golden Gate out of the antistatic bag and plug it firmly into the selected bridge-slot. If Golden Gate has been plugged in correctly, the metal bracket fitted at the rear of Golden Gate over the two external connectors neatly closes off again the Amiga case to the back. Tightly connect the metal bracket with the Amiga case using the screw taken out in step 3. Now the CPU adapter (it also is in the antistatic bag in which Golden Gate was) is installed. The CPU adapter must be plugged under the 68000 CPU of the Amiga 2000.In order to do so the 68000 CPU must be pulled out of its socket and be plugged into the CPU adapter. then this module is plugged back into the 68000 socket of the Amiga 2000. In order to reach the 68000 CPU without any problems the metal supporting frame taking up the power supply and the floopy disk drives must be removed. For that 3 screws on the front of the metal supporting frame and 2 screws on its back must be removed with the Phillips head screwdriver (with some versions of the case the number of screws can vary). The various cables leading from the components fitted on the metal supporting frame to the Amiga 2000 motherboard may on no account be disconnected. When all screws are removed, the metal supporting frame can be lifted with both hands and be tilted to the left, so that it comes to lie on the Amiga case in the area of the slots in a head-down-position. Directly on the right of the processor slot (into which e.g. accelerator cards can be plugged) the 68000 CPU is located, a component of about a size of 7.5cm *2.5cm with 64 pins in its socket. The 68000 CPU can be extracted from its socket with the help of the flat-nosed screwdriver. Then the CPU is plugged firmly and level into the CPU adapter. This has to be done in a way to get the notch of the 68000 CPU. Afterwards this module, consisting of 68000 CPU and CPU adapter, is plugged into the empty 68000 socket of the Amiga 2000 motherboard. In doing so take care that the notch of the 68000 CPU socket points in the same direction as the notches of the 68000 CPU and the CPU adapter and that all pins are neatly fitted in the 68000 CPU socket ( not bend inwards or outwards). Before the Amiga is built together again a short check of the proper functionning should be carried out. Put the metal supporting frame back in its normal position and secure with a screw. Connect all cables and insert a copy of the disk Goldmine I into the floopy disk drive DF0:. Une vis se trouve l'arri re et deux vis droite et gauche en dessous. Simultan ment d gager vers l'avant et soulever prudemment la partie sup rieure. Faire bien attention ne pas heurter l'int rieur de l'ordinateur. Placer le ch ssis sup rieur retir en un endroit s Golden Gate peut tre branch dans une des deux fiches passerelles de l'Amiga. Avant de placer Golden Gate, il faut retirer la plaque m tal de la fiche passerelle. Avec un tournevis cruciforme, enlever la vis afin d' loigner la plaque m tal. Conserver ces deux ments en un endroit prot Retirer Golden Gate de son tui antistatique et le placer sur la fiche passerelle choisie. Si Golden Gate a plac correctement, l' trier en tal mont l'arri re de Golden Gate par dessus les deux connecteurs externes, referme le ch ssis Amiga vers l'arri re. Avec une vis du paragraphe trier peut nouveau reviss la coque de l'Amiga. Maintenant l'adaptateur CPU doit tre install . (Il se trouve aussi dans la poche antistatique o se trouvait Golden Gate). L'adaptateur CPU doit sous le CPU 68000 de l'Amiga 2000. Pour cela retirer le CPU 68000 de son socle et l'enficher dans l'adaptateur CPU. Puis placer celui-ci sur le socle du CPU 68000 de l'Amiga 2000. Pour atteindre le CPU 68000 sans g ne notoire, il faut retirer le cadre porteur en m tal recevant le transformateur et le lecteur floppy. Avec un tournevis cruciforme enlever 3 vis sur le devant et 2 vis sur l'arri re du cadre porteur (selon le type de l'appareil le nombre de vis peut varier). Tous les c bles plac s sur ce cadre de soutien et conduisant atine m re de l'Amiga 2000 ne doivent en aucun cas tre d connect Une fois toutes les vis enlev es, il suffit de soulever le cadre, de le retourner vers la gauche de telle mani re qu'il se retrouve l'envers sur l'Amiga non loin des prises. Directement droite des fiches du processeur (o l'on peut placer par exemple des cartes acc ratrices) se trouve le CPU 68000, un ment de 7,5*2,5cm comportant 64 broches. A l'aide d'un tournevis standard, enlever prudemment le CPU 68000 de son socle. Ensuite le CPU est enfich dans le socle vide du 68000 de la platine. Le rep re de la fiche doit correspondre aux res du CPU 68000 et ceux de l'adaptateur et aucune broche ne doit tordue. Avant de remonter l'ordinateur, v rifier rapidement que tout fonctionne correctement. Replacer le cadre de soutien dans sa position initiale et le fixer avec une vis. Rebrancher tous les c bles et placer dans le lecteur floppy DF0: une copie de Goldmine I. The card comes with software to support IBM I/O cards, Ethernet cards and IDE hard disk controllers. I paid $135 (US) for it but that was before Software Results Enterprises bought the board from its creator, David Salamon. I guess economies of scale is taking place here.... (I actually learned something in my macro economics class!!) There may also be a bundle deal available later with the Golden Gate II card, a NE2000 compatible ethernet card, drivers, manuals, and a copy of AmiTCP. SPECIAL HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS HARDWARE An Amiga with a Zorro-II compatible slot AND an IBM ISA type slot. (A2000, A1500, A3000, A4000, etc.) You preferably want to have at least two open IBM slots to plug in the GoldenGate II and an IBM card, or it wouldn't be much use. Hard disk recommended, but not required. You need to have at least 1 megabyte of AutoConfig type memory available. SOFTWARE You should have Kickstart 2.04 or higher, but you might be able to get it to work under 1.3. Software Results Enterprises says that the serial, parallel and Hard Disk support will work under 1.3, but the ethernet and support programs line IOWEDGE and SWITCHCONTROL need 2.04 or higher. COPY PROTECTION None. You simply open your Amiga, pop the full-length card into a ZORRO/IBM ISA slot, plug in any IBM cards you want to use, and then close the computer. You then need to copy some files from the GoldenGate II software disk to your startup disk. The disk does not use the Commodore installation program to install the software. [MODERATOR'S NOTE: If you are not comfortable opening up your Amiga, then you should have the work done by an authorized Amiga service center. Opening your Amiga yourself may void your warranty, and careless work may even damage the machine. - Dan] Now boot up your computer and run a "SysInfo" program to find out if the card is working. The software disk that comes with the GGII has a SysInfo program on it in case you do not have one. The SysInfo program shows a Zorro-II card with the name "GoldenGate II", manufacturer "D. Salamon" and memory size "1 megabyte." NOTE: I bought my GoldenGate II card from the creator of the board, David Salamon. The board now belongs to a new company, Software Results Enterprises, so the software installation might change. (They might make an Installer script for it....) REVIEW The GoldenGate II card is an excellent product. This is not like the GoldenGate bridgeboard or the Commodore bridgeboard that let you run IBM software on the Amiga. The GGII lets the Amiga OS communicate to the cards on the IBM bus in your Amiga! You probably thought that you could never access those slots, but now you can. With the card in your computer, you can add serial ports to your Amiga by simply sticking those cheap IBM AT Multi/IO card into you Amiga. When I got the GGII, I added two IBM AT Multi/IO cards. One of them was a card that had two high speed, buffered serial ports, a printer port, and a IBM joystick port. Currently, you cannot use the joystick port, and the printer port is not bi-directional. The latter is fine for printers, but you cannot use bi-directional products like Audio Digitizers, scanners, etc. The card set me back only $25 (US), and I now have two high speed serial ports! The other Multi-IO card is the same, but the serial ports are not buffered. (Being non-buffered, the ports act in the same was the internal Amiga port does.) To use these cards, you have to set up the cards to use COM1-COM4 and LPT1-LPT2. If you have never worked with IBM compatible products, you might have a problem figuring out IRQ's and IO addresses that you need to deal with in the IBM world. (I love Amiga! ;->) You could always ask some IBM people to help you, or can try to figure it out yourself. The documentation that came with the GGII card also gives you some information on what to do. So, my Amiga now has a total of 5 serial ports, 3 parallel ports, and two non-functional, IBM type joystick ports. These are all the IO ports the current GGII software supports. To access these ports, all you have to do is tell you program to use ibmser.device for the serial ports, or ibmprint.device for the printer ports. You then set the unit number in your program to tell it which of the ports to use. If your program does not let you pick which device or unit to use, the GGII comes with a little program called IOWEDGE which lets you redirect the serial.device or parallel.device. You can also use IBM Ethernet and IBM IDE cards in your Amiga. I do not have a need for either of these, so I have not tried them. I do know that you access these in the same way as the serial or parallel ports. (Through device drivers.) The Ethernet is also SANA-II compatible so it will work with all Amiga networking programs that support this type of device, like AmiTCP/IP. The GoldenGate also works with Chris Hames's excellent PCTask program. That program lets you emulate a IBM PC/XT on your Amiga through software. (A demo version of available on Aminet.) With my GoldenGate II card and PCTask, I did something that most people thought wouldn't work. I took one of those cheap IBM television cards you see for sale all over the place (I bought one from a friend for $65), put it into my Amiga in a free 8-bit ISA slot and installed the software that came with the board in PCTask. No one here would believe that it would work in my Amiga; but when I booted up PCTask, my VGA screen flicked for a second, and then I was watching television! Now this is no big deal for you guys with 1084's, but I have a flicker fixer and a SVGA monitor, so I cannot watch TV like you guys can. But now I can. The card I got has a built in CATV compatible tuner that is controlled through a little MS-DOS program. And it worked perfectly on my Amiga. Amazing, if you ask me! DOCUMENTATION My board came with excellent documentation. It was on high quality, stapled paper; that is, not bound in book format. The manual may change now that the board is sold by Software Results Enterprises. The manual is thorough and covers just about everything, including how to program the board. I read it from cover to cover. The distribution disk also comes with a README file that has some useful information in it. All the info in the README file is in the manual too, but you may have missed it by just skimming the manual. LIKES AND DISLIKES I like everything about the product except two things. One is that it does not come with any kind of VGA video drivers for the Amiga that let you use a VGA card to display Amiga graphics. I asked Software Results Enterprises about it, and they said it is definitely possible, but without OS 4.0 and RTG (retargetable graphics), it would be extremely difficult. Another problem with the board is because of a flaw in all Amiga 2000's. When you have a 68020 or higher in an Amiga 2000, you have to shut off the DATA CACHE when any Zorro-II card is accessed. I cannot remember the technical reasons for the problem, but the manual covers it fully. There are two solutions for this problem. One is to run Enforcer by Commodore. (Enforcer comes on the disk with the GoldenGate II in case you do not have it.) Enforcer automatically turns off the DATA CACHE when anything accesses a Zorro-II card. This is fine, except that I cannot use Enforcer on my Amiga because it requires an MMU. I have only a 68EC030 CPU that does not have an MMU, so I cannot run Enforcer. The other solution to the problem is to turn off the DATA CACHE with the "CPU" command. That is what I have to do. The problem with doing that is I lose performance by shutting off the cache. [MODERATOR'S NOTE: Would any readers from Commodore like to explain the problem in a followups article? - Dan] If you do not do one of these two things, your Amiga will behave strangely sometimes. I have had it happen to me when I turned on the DATA CACHE and accessed the IBM cards a lot. I don't think this is a problem in the A3000, but if it is, all A3000's have MMU's so they can all run Enforcer. COMPARISON TO OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS I have only heard of one other product that can be compared to the GoldenGate II: the OnmiBus card (or something like that). It supposedly does the same thing. I do not know of anyone who owns this card, so I cannot talk about it. I also know that this card has a VGA driver that lets you use VGA cards for Amiga display. (Something the GGII lacks.) None that I know of, except that Zorro-II and DATA CACHE problem, which is the Amiga's fault, not the GoldenGate II's. VENDOR SUPPORT I have talked to Software Results Enterprises a number of times via Email and they have been incredibly nice. Ethan Dicks, the guy behind the company, has always responded to my Email promptly and given good answers to my questions. My impression of customer support at Software Results Enterprises: Up there with the best of 'em. (Much better than MicroSoft and Apple!) WARRANTY My board came with a ONE YEAR WARRANTY from David Salamon. David no longer deals with the board, but Software Results Enterprises said they would do work on my board for $25 plus shipping. I am not sure how I feel about this, but if the time comes for repair, I will have to think about whether I should demand a free repair (if my warranty would have still applied with David Salamon.) A new board bought from Software Results Enterprises should have a ONE year warranty too, but they did not say. Please contact then for more information. CONCLUSIONS The GoldenGate II card is a great card. I could not have bought a high speed serial/parallel board for my Amiga with 4 serial ports for less than the price of the GoldenGate II. GoldenGate est de pleine longueur, alignant les deux bus de connexion Amiga et PC 16 bits destin tre enfich s dans un connecteur Amiga/PC de votre Amiga. Vous trouverez galement un manuel en Anglais (j'ai un mod le de d monstration provenant d'Allemagne, la version fran aise du produit n'existe pas encore) tr taill et bien con u, avec suffisamment d'illustrations de sch mas et de tableaux crivant efficacement l'installation pour un 2000, un 3000 et un 3000T ainsi que les diff rentes configurations possibles. Le soft d' mulation tient sur 2 disquettes roses (oui roses) et un socle 68000 est joint pour l'installation dans un A2000. Je reviendai plus tard sur ce socle. Il n'y a pas de DOS IBM ni aucun soft fourni avec la carte. L'INSTALLATION Il suffit de suivre les indications du manuel et l'installation dans l'A3000 et 3000T ne devrait pas poser de probl mes, m me pour un d butant. Il suffit d'enficher la carte dans un des connecteurs Amiga en ligne avec un connecteur AT. Pour l'Amiga 2000, l'installation est plus d licate. En effet, il est n cessaire de retirer le 68000 de son socle et d'ins rer le socle fourni par Vortex ebtre les deux. Cette op ration n cessite le d montage du bloc alimentation et est suffisament compliqu e pour n' tre effectu e que par une personne effectu e que par une personne exp riment e. MISE EN ROUTE ET PREFERENCES PC Une fois tout install , les pr rences PC sont accessibles par le programme "setup" qui ouvre un cran en mode PC. Tous les param mulation peuvent tre ici r s sur deux crans. La selection du langage et du clavier se fait dans le setup de GoldenGate, avant le d marrage de l' mulation. Le clavier est de type PC AT 84 touches. Il est recommand de ne pas d marrer de driver de clavier sous MS-DOS. Vous pouvez galement choisir l'assignation des lecteurs de disquettes Amiga pour l' mulation. Tous les lecteurs Amiga internes et externes peuvent utilis s pendant l' mulation. Il y a galement la possiblit de brancher soit sur le port interne de la carte, soit sur le port externe, un lecteur de disquettes IBM. Si la carte est e d'un controlleur de disquettes au format 2.88 Meg sont support Pour le support du disque dur PC, comme por les lecteurs de dsquettes, plusieurs solutions sont propos es. La plus simple consiste er un fichier sur une partition Amiga, simulant un disque dur PC. Cette solution, bien que pratique est cependant insuffisamment performante pour tre utilis long terme. Une autre solution plus s rieuse, consiste reserver une partition Amiga enti re au PC: l'acc s au disque dur sera plus rapide. Enfin, on peut connecter un disque dur au format IDE sur le bus pr cet effet sur la carte. Les mod les vid mulation support s vont du CGA monochrome au VGA monochrome. En mode texte VGA, le mode texte 8 ou 16 couleurs est galement support , permettant l'utilisation en couleur de logiciels tels que Word, dbase, etc... Sur un A3000, ces modes sont suffisament rapides pour suffire utilisation soutenue. La voie royale reste quand m me l'utilisation dans un des connecteurs PC de l'Amiga d'une veritable carte VGA couleur. Elle s'av indispensable pour une utlisation professionnelle de Windows ou Geos par exemple Vortex propose ici encore quelques options interessantes: Gr un boitier de commutation, le moniteur multisynchro de l'Amiga peut tre utilis pour l'affichage Amiga et PC alternativement. On peut galement connecter un VGA suppl mentaire, c'est encore mieux. La gestion de la m moire d' mulation est galement tr s souple: sur les connecteurs de la carte, il est possible de placer jusqu' 16 Mo de m moire sour forme de barettes standard. Parmi ces 16 Mo, 4Mo peuvent tre allou l'Amiga sous forme de fast RAM gr ce au logiciel "addmem" fourni. UTILISATION COURANTE ET LOGICIELS ESSAYES En un premier temps, j'ai utilis GoldenGate pendant un bon moment sans carte VGA ni moniteur additionnel. L'utilisation en mode d' mulation VGA texte 16 couleurs est tout fait satifaisante, sans toutefois arriver au niveau au niveau d'un PC 386SX de carte VGA. Remarquons au passage que cette bonne performance dans l'affichage VGA n'est pas trang celle de l'Amiga 3000. Des logiciels comme Word 5.5 ou Dbase fonctionnent sans aucun probl me et la vitesse d'affichage est suffisante, m me pour un travail soutenu. L'utilsiation de Windows , sans pour autant tre impossible, s'est av e fastidieuse, la vitesse d'affichage graphique monochrome tant vraiment insuffisante. C'est ici qu'il a cessaire de recourir une carte Super VGA 256 K (800*600 en 16 couleurs). L'installation est totalement indolore, il suffit de l'enficher dans un connecteur ISA de l' Amiga et elle est automatiquement reconnue par Golden Gate au d marrage. Il n'est m me pas n cessaire de passer auparavant par le panneau de configuration. L'inconv nient est qu'il faut soit acheter un moniteur VGA soit, si vous avez d un multisync pour l'Amiga, d brancher et rebrancher le chaque fois que vous utilisez l' mulation l' mulation. Vortex pr voit pour bient t une solution gante, constituant en une bo commutation automatique avec 2 sorties VGA pour la vid o Amiga et PC. Les cartes VGA, d sormais tr s bon march , s'av rent tre un investissement plus que recommendable pour un travail ais avec Windows ou tout autre interfac graphique. Avec la carte VGA, GoldenGate se montre sous son meilleur jour, Windows tourne comme sur un v ritable PC et il n'y a pas eu de probl mes de compatibilit . On oublierai presque l'Amiga. CONCLUSION Commodore n'est plus seul dans le march des cartes passerelles et a m trouv un serieux concurrent en Vortex. Le fait que la cadence du processeur soit 25 Mhz est un avantage prendre en compte dans la balance. La gestion de la m moire d' mulation du cot Amiga comme du cot PC est s souple et permet la carte, quand elle n'est pas en service de s'improviser en extension m moire pour l'Amiga. Sur le 3000 utilis , Golden Gate a tendance gler l'horloge interne de l'Amiga. Selon Vortex, qui nous en avons fait la remarque, cela est d au fait que commodore a utilis des quartz de types diff rents pour certains A3000. C'est un bug au niveau du soft, qui est en cours de r paration nous a t'on promis. Bref, un produit int ressant pour tout possesseur d'Amiga 2000 et 3000, avec un avenir interessant, Vortex vient de nous annoncer en exclusivit ce mois-ci encore, un mod base de 486SX 26 Mhz allait tre disponible. @ENDNODE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- @NODE Setup_e "Setting the Golden Gate Card" @{b} SETTING THE GOLDEN GATE CARD @{ub} GoldenGate-386SX/486SLC/486SLC2 and different Amiga models: ----------------------------------------------------------- GoldenGate has to know if it runs on an A2000, A3000 or A4000. For some reasons there is no unique mechanism for software running on an Amiga to recognize the current machine type. In the case that GolenGate's build in detection fails there is a separate way to tell the emulator the type of your Amiga. To do this you have to create a textfile named glib.cnf in the DEVS drawer of your boot device. (e.g. by means of ED). This textfile contains just a single word: machine_Ax000 where x=2 for Amiga A2000 x=3 for Amiga A3000 x=4 for Amiga A4000 You can check the autodetection of GoldenGate by starting GG directly from the CLI with the option INFO. To do so change to the drawer GoldenGate and GG INFO GoldenGate and HIMEM.SYS: ------------------------- If you use your GoldenGate-386SX with 512kB local ram (delivery state) and you use amiga memory as extended memory you have to modifiy the HIMEM.SYS entry in the file CONFIG.SYS as follows: device={path}HIMEM.SYS /machine:2 where {path} is the full pathname of the subdirectory where HIMEM.SYS is located, e.g. {path} = C:\DOS\ GoldenGate and EMM386.EXE or QEMM386.SYS: ----------------------------------------- If you want to use EMM386.EXE or QEMM386.SYS you have to activate SMARTDRV.EXE before. Otherwise the system will crash if there is a disk IO into the UMA. (which happens e.g. with deviceHigh, lh or LoadHigh etc.) The Jumper J4 and J5 on the GoldenGate board -------------------------------------------- The Jumpers J4 and J5 on the GoldenGate board are not used at the moment and must not be closed therefore. The Format-command in GoldenGate Server mode -------------------------------------------- With the different Workbench-versions several FORMAT commands have been delivered, which do not support the Server mode of the GoldenGate properly. We strongly recommend to use the Format command from the system drawer of the Goldmine I disk. This makes sure, that your drives work fine in the Server mode. Installation of additional Amiga harddisk partitions via HDT.SYS ---------------------------------------------------------------- Golden Gate supports more than two harddisks in PC-mode via the hdt.sys driver. Please refer to the Golden Gate manual for more informations about the installation of hdt.sys and the format utility PFormat. Additional, hdt.sys driven partitions have the following limitations: - The size of each logical drive is limited to 32 MBytes. If the Amiga partition is bigger, PFormat uses only 32 MBytes for the PC partition. - HDT.SYS does not work if two AT-Bus harddisks are already present or if you use a PC-SCSI controller with two harddisk drives. - HDT.SYS does not work in the virtual PC mode. The hdt.sys driver does not work together with EMM386.EXE, QEMM and similar drivers. It is not possible to access the partitions in Windows 3.0/3.1 enhanced mode, too. Compatibility with the Adaptec 1542C ------------------------------------ The actual version of the Golden Gate software supports the new Adaptec 1542C controller. Earlier versions ot the GG software do not! You have to disable the floppy controller option on the Adaptec via Dip-switch 5, because the floppy controller is not compatible with the Golden Gate board. To access PC-floppy drives, you should use the vortex FDC-Kit. The Task utility on the Goldmine II disk ---------------------------------------- Syntax: TASK [ON:nn] [OFF:mm] nn=Task On-Time mm=Task Off-Time (Unit = 1/50 seconds) With the Task utility the task priority of the GoldenGate can be adjusted to the requirements of your applications. A lower priority for GoldenGate means more computing time and performance on the Amiga side. The on-time defines the time the GoldenGate can access the Amiga resources without limitations. In the off-time interval, the GoldenGate stops its activities to speed up the Amigasystem. The off/on-time settings are independed. Default is off-time 0, GoldenGate consumes all free processor time. Recommendation: values between 0...5 Use of PC floppy disk drives together with the video emulation -------------------------------------------------------------- The use of PC floppy disk drives which are connected with the GoldenGate floppy disk controller and the simultaneous operation of the video emulation with 16 colors, may cause errors while writing or formatting disks. The reason is the limited bandwidth of the original or enhanced custom chipset of the Amiga. In this case it is necessary to reduce the number of colors to 4 or 8. This problem does not occur with the new AA chipset or a EGA/VGA card. The backslash on the Amiga keyboard ----------------------------------- The scancodes of the Amiga keyboard are not similar to those of a PC-AT keyboard. Therefore not all characters are on the same keys than in Amiga mode. Depending on the PC operating system, the backslash key, which is important for the PC mode, is available on the ALT+ or right Amiga + keys. NOTE: To get the backslash under Windows without problems (on the keys right Amiga + ) it is necessary to choose 101-/102-keys AT-keyboard during the Windows installation. If the backslash is not available after your Windows installation, you can switch to the correct keyboard with the Windows SETUP program. SETUP starts form the DOS prompt or within a Windows session. More computing power with GoldenGate-486SLC/SLC2 ------------------------------------------------- You will have up to 20% more computing power with a GoldenGate-486SLC/486SLC2 if you start GG with the option FAST. This option must not be used if there are ISA-cards in the pc-slots which can be isa-busmasters. GG INFO La carte GoldenGate et le driver HIMEM.SYS: ------------------------------------------- Si vous utilisez la carte 386 SX avec 512Ko de ram locale (livre d'usine) et de la memoire Amiga comme memoire etendu (extended ram), vous devez modifier HIMEM.SYS dans le fichier CONFIG.SYS comme ceci: device={path}HIMEM.SYS /machine:2 ou {path} est le chemin complet du repertoire ou HIMEM.SYS est situe comme ceci {path} = C:\DOS\ GoldenGate et EMM386.EXE ou QEMM386.SYS: ---------------------------------------- Si vous voulez utilisez EMM386.EXE ou QEMM386.SYS vous devez activez SMARTDRV.EXE avant sinon le systeme ne marche pas. Les cavaliers J4 et J5 sur la carte GoldenGate: ----------------------------------------------- Les cavaliers J4 et J5 sur la carte ne sont pas utilises pour le moment et ils ne doivent pas etre connectes La commande Format en mode serveur de la GoldenGate ---------------------------------------------------- Avec les differentes versions de Workbench, plusieurs commandes FORMAT vous sont livres qui ne supporte pas completement le mode server de la GoldenGate. Nous vous recommendons d'utilisez la commande FORMAT qui se trouve dans le repertoire systeme de la disquette Goldmine I. Vous serz sures que votre drive fonctionne convenablement en mode serveur. L'installation de partition disque dur a partir de HDT.SYS ---------------------------------------------------------- La carte GoldenGate supporte plus de disque dur en mode PC grace au programme hdt.sys. Reportez vous au manuel de la GoldenGate pour plus d'informations concernant l'installation de hdt.sys et l'utilitaire de formatage PFormat. En complement, sachez que les partitions commandees par hdt.sys ont quelques limitations: - La taile de chaque disque logique sont limit 32 Mo. Si la taille est superieure, PFormat n'utilise que 32Mo comme partition PC. - HDT.SYS ne fonctionne pas si deux disques dur AT-Bus sont dej sents ou si vous utilisez un controlleur PC-SCSI avec deux disques durs. - HDT.SYS ne fonctionne pas en mode virtuel du PC. Il ne fonctionne pas avec EMM386.EXE, QEMM et les programmes similaires. Il n'est pas possible d'acceder au partitions avec Windows 3.0/3.1 en mode tendu aussi. Compatibilit avec le controlleur the Adaptec 1542C --------------------------------------------------- La version actuelle du logiciel GoldenGate (Vers. 1.31.27-02/94) supporte le nouveau controlleur Adaptec 1542C. Les versions plus vieilles ne le font pas. Vous devez desactivez l'option du controlleur de disquette sur la carte Adaptex gr ce a l'interrupteur 5 parce que le controlleur de disquette n'est pas compatible avec la carte GoldenGate. Pour acceder au lecteur de disquette PC, vous devez utiliser le KIT FDC. L'utilitaire de t che sur la disquette Goldmine II -------------------------------------------------- Syntaxe: TASK [ON:nn] [OFF:mm] nn=Task On-Time mm=Task Off-Time (Unit = 1/50 seconds) Avec l'utilitaire de t che, la priorit de la t che de la GoldenGate peut tre ajust aux besoins de vos applications. une priorit basse pour la GoldenGate signifie plus de temps CPU et plus de performance du cot Amiga. L'intervalle "On-time" d finit le temps o la GoldenGate peut acceder aux ressources Amiga sans limitations. Dans l'intervalle "Off-time", la carte GoldenGate stoppe son activit pour accelerer le systeme Amiga. Les intervalles "On-time"/"Off-time" sont ind pendants. Par d faut, "Off-time" est ro: la carte consomme tout le temps processeur. Nous vous recommendons de mettre la valeur de 0 L'utilisation d'une unit de disquette avec l' mulation vid ------------------------------------------------------------- L'utilisation simultan e d'une unit de disquette connect e sur le controlleur de la GoldenGate avec l' mulation 16 couleurs de la vid o peut cr er des erreurs quand on crit sur le disque ou quand on formatte. La raison est la limitation de la largeur de bande de la puce vid o de l'Amiga originale ou ECS. Dans ce cas, il est necessaire de r duire le nombre de couleurs 4 ou 8. Does anyone know if this card can be upgraded or speeded up.@{ub} Apparently, you can use the Make-it upgrade to a 486/50. BUT I have no evidence supporting this, and plenty against it. If you have a 386 GG, then it may well work. If you have a 486SLC25, then no chance. I've tried 2 Make-it upgrades, neither worked. I think it's because the base speed of both CPUs is identical (25MHz) as the new one is a clock doubler that starts without the doubling on, I think. If you're in the U.K, check out Technomatic. They were very good for arranging collection of both the Make-it's I tried, and refunded me the full amount.
