RemoteAccess 2.00 GAMMA release notes
-------------------------------------
Welcome to the (long awaited) 2.00 upgrade!
This is the most significant upgrade yet. It is absolutely essential that you
read the accompanying documentation before upgrading. As you can see, this has
been released as a GAMMA; the full shareware version will be released in a
number of weeks, when all reported bugs have been fixed.
There is no upgrade fee for the shareware version. Your existing RA.KEY will
continue to work with the 2.00 release.
Not everyone will want to install this GAMMA version. Some reasons why you
might want to wait for the full 2.00 release:
1. This GAMMA contains only upgrade documentation. While all new features and
functions are clearly explained, there is no RA.DOC file to refer to.
2. This GAMMA will only run if you are registered (thanks!)
3. A significant number of your existing doors and external utilities probably
won't work. This is due to some major modification of existing file formats.
I apologise for this inconvenience, but there were certain new features I
wanted to implement that just could not be done without making these
changes.
Continuing to use external programs which do not support the 2.00 structures
will have unpredictable results, and will probably cause corruption of the
user database.
The good news is that we are working with third-party developers to upgrade
as many external programs as possible. At the time of release, many of these
programs already support 2.00. The bottom line is - check with the author of
the doors you use to check whether the current version is 2.00 compatible.
(See the end of this document for structures and developers information).
4. This GAMMA contains everything I wanted in 2.00 with one exception. The new
message-base format (JAM) is not yet fully operational. It does work, but
is not nearly robust enough for public consumption, and has therefore been
disabled for this GAMMA. It *WILL* be in the full 2.00 release version.
You will notice in the message area definition screen that there is an
option to specify message-base type (JAM/Hudson). Do *NOT* select JAM for
any areas at this stage. I would have preferred to delay the release until
JAM support is completed; however, given the current orientation of the
sysop community, a release before March was mandatory.
RemoteAccess 2.00 Professional
------------------------------
The Pro 2.00 version will be released at the same time as the full shareware
version. If you already have the Pro version, you can upgrade to this GAMMA
provided you have a shareware RA.KEY. If not, you will have to wait for the
full release. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but my number
one objective is to insulate my commercial users from as many bugs as
possible. Final pricing for Pro 2.00 has not yet been set, however, it will
be accompanied by a completely rewritten bound manual.
Pro users who have returned their registration cards will receive upgrade
information as it becomes available.
How to upgrade
--------------
Due to the significant number of changes, this is not a simple "plug & play"
upgrade. While not especially complicated, there are a number of steps that
must be followed to complete the upgrade successfully:
As always, BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM FIRST!
1. Replace your 1.11 executables with the 2.00 ones.
(Don't forget your node directories, if applicable).
2. Run RACONFIG in your system and node directories.
This will set defaults for the new options.
3. Run 111TO200.EXE.
This will prompt you for some information, and will
then upgrade your configuration, menu and user files.
4. Delete the USERON.BBS file from the system directory.
5. Follow the instructions in the file "RA200FDB.TXT" under
the "Upgrade notes" heading, to install the new file system.
6. Update the following prompts in your language files:
46, 56, 57, 103, 199, 408, 524, 571, 572, 573
601 to 659
NOTE: Prompts 570 to 600 are reserved for the Professional
version.
7. If you have copies of CONFIG.RA in your node directories ONLY
because of different modem configurations, you may delete
CONFIG.RA from your node directories. All modem configuration
information is now stored in MODEM.RA.
8. Finally, don't forget to disable any doors which are not
compatible with 2.00.
As a final upgrade note, the command-line parameters for RAMSG.EXE have
changed. The old version of RAMSG has been thrown out and replaced with
an OEM version of the MBUTIL message database maintenance program. It
contains extensive help screens to aid you in your installation.
NOTE: If you use RAMSG 1.11 or any other message-base utility which reads
MESSAGES.RA for purging information, you MUST replace it with the
new RAMSG provided in this archive!
Third-party developers
----------------------
This archive contains the 2.00 file structures. These structures, while they
may change slightly, are guaranteed to be compatible with the 2.00 full
release version. Specs for the new JAM message-base format will be made
available as soon as possible before the full release.
A special developers conference (tagged RA_DEV) has been set up to provide
developers with direct access to more detailed information. RA_DEV is
moderated by Rod Hancock and myself, and is available from the following
primary distribution points:
1:2270/233 Geoffrey Booher
2:512/1 Peter Janssens
2:440/64 Adrian Pop
3:712/704 Terry Harvey
As a point of information, this is the last RemoteAccess release under the
Continental Software banner. All future versions of RemoteAccess will be
released by my new company Wantree International.
Hope you enjoy this upgrade!
Andrew Milner.
