How to use SabreChat!
---------------------
by Shawn Gresham
Hello,
This file is an attempt to help you learn the fundamentals of using SabreChat!
to chat with other users.
Types of Chat
-------------
First, I would like to begin by saying that there are two different types of
chat sessions, line chat and character chat. The difference between these two
chat sessions is mere the point in which what you type is sent (or seen) by
the other users. In a character chat, each letter you type is immediately
seen by the other users. This type of session does not allow you to type at
the same time as another user. A line chat, however, waits till you are at
the end of a line or have pressed ENTER before it sends the whole line the
other user. This type of chat session allows you to type at the same time as
the other user because you will not be interrupted till you press ENTER to end
your message. SabreChat! supports both of these chat sessions and type used
is set by the Sysop during installation.
A little hint
-------------
Something that I have found to be helpful while chatting with another user is
that once you have finished typing your message, press ENTER twice. This will
leave a blank line after what you have typed and will signal to the other
users that you have finished and they may begin.
The commands
------------
SabreChat! offers a few commands to help you while chatting. All commands in
SabreChat! begin with a '/' forward slash letter. For example typing /QUIT
will allow you to exit the chat session and return to the menu. Commands must
be the first thing on the line that you type.
Also, many commands have parameters that you can enter on the same line as the
command. For example, the /WHISPER command needs a person's name and the
message to send to that person. You could type '/WHISPER JOHN HI THERE.' or
just type '/WHISPER' and answer the questions. These short cuts are show on
each of the following lines by using the <parameter> format. For example,
/WHISPER's format is '/WHISPER <person's name> <message>' meaning that you can
enter the person's name and a short message on the same line as /WHISPER.
Here is a list of the commands and what they do:
/?
This command shows short list of the commands available to you.
/ACTION
This command shows a list of the action commands that you can use while
chatting. These are extra commands that print a message when used. You use
these commands just like any other command by typing them on the beginning of
line. Also these commands are created by your sysop. Play with them to see
what they do, and you might suggest others for your sysop to add.
/BYE, /EXIT, /QUIT, and /X
These four commands allow you to exit SabreChat! and return to the menu.
/COLORS
This command turns on and off colors.
/EDIT
This command allows you to change your alias or sex. It also allows you to
re-answer the questionnaire if the sysop has one available.
/EXPEL <user name or node number>
This command is only available if you have created your own room using the
/JOIN command. It allows you to throw another user in that room back into the
PUBLIC room. I added this command for the use of moderators in room that deal
with a specific subject (like ROLEPLAYING or something). The moderator would
be able to remove any user who was being unsocialable or was generally
disturbing the flow of the conversation.
/GRANT <user name or node number>
This command, like the /EXPEL command, is only available to the owner of a
room (the one who created it with the /JOIN command). This command allows you
to pass ownership of the room to another user in that room. This is also
added for moderators who can pass their ability to someone else when they
leave the conversation.
/HELP
This displays a long detailed description of these commands.
/IGNORE
This command turns on and off your ability to hear other people's whispers. I
added this command for those usering in a private roomm that are being
harassed by a user using the /WHISPER command to irritate them.
/JOIN <room name>
This command allows you to create a new room with any name you wish. To use
this you just need to type /JOIN and the name of the room. For example the
following command creates a room called GIRLSONLY: '/JOIN GIRLSONLY'. Also if
you preced the room name with a '/' slash letter, then the room name will not
appear on the list in the /LIST command. People wishing to enter your private
room will have to know the name that you used. For example if you wanted to
create a private room, you could type /JOIN /PASSWORD.
/LINE
This command toggles between the line chat and character chat modes that I
described earlier. It is best to use the same mode that the other people are
using in chat.
/LIST
This command list everyone in SabreChat!. It also shows the room that they
are in. Rooms listed as <private> can only be entered if you know the exact
room name.
/LISTCONF
This command lists the rooms already available and also shows the number of
people in them.
/LOOK <user name>
This command lets you look at another person's answers to the questionnair if
your sysop has a questionnaire. The person you wish to look at has to be in
chat with you.
/ONLINE
This command gives a list of every user on the BBS and what they are doing.
These users can be contacted using the /PAGE command.
/PAGE <node number>
This command allows you to page another user who is on the BBS. This notifies
them that you are in SabreChat! and that you wish them to join you.
/PROMPT
This command toggles thru the three different prompt types. Try them all and
see which you prefer.
/TIME
This command shows the currect time and the time that you have left in
SabreChat!
/WHISPER <user name or node number> <message to whisper>
This command allows you to send a private message to another person that ONLY
he/she will see. The person does not have to be in your room, but they have
to be in SabreChat!.
/<user name> <message>
This is a short cut to the /WHISPER command. By typing another person's name
preceded by a / will allow you to send a private message that only he/she can
see.
Good Luck
---------
Well, there you go... If you have any problems, drop a message to your sysop
and he/she should be able to help you thru any difficulty you are having.
Also, if you have any ideas that would make SabreChat! neater or easier to
use, leave a message to your sysop, and maybe he/she can get it to me for the
next version.
See Ya'll Later and have fun!!!!!!
