Silver Xpress Mail System V5.03
(c) copyright 1994 Santronics Software
┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ MANUAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS │
└─────────────────────────────┘
Version 5.03 is a maintenance update over V5.00, V5.01 or V5.02 or the
wide public beta 5.02B04, 5.02B05. If you are manual upgrading, please
read the upgrade information below.
The manual steps discussed here are exactly what the INSTALL program
will do for you. Some people like to manually install programs, so
these instructions are here in the event you have a problem with the
install program or you wish to do this work manually.
After you install, please read the ADDENDUM.DOC, HISTORY.503 files for
any information which may pertain to your BBS and Silver Xpress setup.
NEW INSTALLATION ONLY
─────────────────────
1) Make the following directories. Change into this directory.
MD \XPRESS
CD \XPRESS
MD MISC
MD HELP
MD BULL
2) Unzip the following into their respective directories:
PKUNZIP XPEXE.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP XPSYS.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP XPUTIL.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP XPMISC.ZIP into \XPRESS\MISC
PKUNZIP XPHELP.ZIP into \XPRESS\HELP
PKUNZIP XPBULL.ZIP into \XPRESS\BULL
PKUNZIP SAMFORM.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP SXGUID01.ZIP into \XPRESS
OPTIONAL RIP GRAPHICS:
PKUNZIP XPRIP.ZIP into \XPRESS\MISC
3) Copy the XPRESS.BAT file to your BBS directory.
This is the batch file which is called by the BBS. You will be able
to edit this file from within XPADM.EXE or edit it manually to
adjust the switching of directories.
4) Run XPADM.EXE.
XPADM is a "DO ALL" administration tool for Silver Xpress. If it
doesn't find the XPMAIL.PRM file, it will assume a new quick
configuration is taking place.
5) After successfully creating/compiling the Xpress control file with
XPADM.EXE, you are now ready to run Xpress from the BBS. Make sure
the XPRESS.BAT is correct for your setup.
6) For some models of Silver Xpress, we included a BBSTOOLS.ZIP file
with example menu files for the BBS you are using. Take a look at
these files and decide if you want to use them or not. If it's not
included, it means DOOR programs are easily installed on your BBS
type and additional help was not required (i.e, PCBOARD does not
need or require this file).
MANUAL UPGRADE INSTALLATION
───────────────────────────
Version 5.03 is a maintenance update over V5.00, V5.01 or V5.02. It is
compatible with V5.0x except the help files, menu, language and display
files have changed. Do not use the old ones.
As always, to be on the safe side, it is recommended to back up your
previous setup.
If you run the INSTALL program, the Install Program will back up into a
directory called PRE503 all the system files it deems necessary before
unzipping and then put back them back after it unzips.
After you upgrade, please read the ADDENDUM.DOC, HISTORY.503 files for
any information which may pertain to your BBS and Silver Xpress setup.
Upgrading from 5.00, 5.01, 5.02 or any wide beta
────────────────────────────────────────────────
1) Delete the following files:
HELP\*.*
MISC\*.*
XPMENU.CTL
XPLANG.CTL
NOTE: If you want to completely begin a new configuration, also
delete XPMAIL.PRM, XPAREAS.*, and XPFILES.*
2) Backup the following files:
XPRESS <--- Only PCBOARD has this file.
XPRESS.BAT <--- You probably have this in your BBS directory.
If so, no need to backup.
XPUSERS.DE <--- Only if you have created a default record.
XPARCH.CTL <--- Only if you changed this, otherwise use new
XPPROT.CTL <--- Only if you changed this, otherwise use new
IRRPORT.CTL <--- Only if you changed this, otherwise use new
XPLIMITS.CTL <--- Only if you changed this, otherwise use new
2) Using the DOS ATTRIB command, type
ATTRIB XPMAIL.EXE -R
ATTRIB XPADM.EXE -R
3) Unzip the following into their respective directories:
PKUNZIP XPEXE.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP XPSYS.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP XPUTIL.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP XPMISC.ZIP into \XPRESS\MISC
PKUNZIP XPHELP.ZIP into \XPRESS\HELP
PKUNZIP XPBULL.ZIP into \XPRESS\BULL
PKUNZIP SAMFORM.ZIP into \XPRESS
PKUNZIP SXGUID01.ZIP into \XPRESS
OPTIONAL RIP GRAPHICS:
PKUNZIP XPRIP.ZIP into \XPRESS\MISC
Now restore the files backuped in step 2.
4) Run XPADM, save and compile.
Upgrading from 4.00 or 3.00
───────────────────────────
Perform the same steps as upgrading from 5.0x to 5.03, but you must do
the following first.
1) Delete the following files:
XPMAIL.PRM
XPAREAS.RAW
XPFILES.RAW
XPAREAS.DAT
XPFILES.DAT
2) You must RUN the XPUCVT7.EXE program to convert 3.00/4.00 to 5.00
XPUSER.DAT format.
This PROGRAM was excluded from the main 5.03 shareware package
since, by now, most people have converted to 5.00. It is included in
the commercial distribution diskette or you can pick up XPUCVT7.EXE
from the Xpress Technical Support Center, Otherwise, delete the
XPUSER.DAT and XPUSER.DEF and start with a fresh Xpress User
Database.
Type: XPUCVT7 XPUSER.DAT
If you have a DEFAULT XPRESS USER file XPUSER.DEF, you will need
to convert it too, or DELETE IT.
Type: XPUCVT7 XPUSER.DEF
or
Type: DEL XPUSER.DEF and create a new default user file using
xpadm.exe
3) OPTIONAL!
Silver Xpress now includes a POWERFUL and HIGHLY EFFICIENT file
transfer protocol. The new file called XPPROT.CTL has a new keyword
"INTERNAL" which tells Xpress to use the new internal protocols.
If you have an old setup with XPPROT.CTL, it should continue to
work, however, we highly recommend using the powerful and optimized
internal protocols in Silver Xpress.
Upgrading from 2.27
───────────────────
There have been 4-5 versions since 2.27. Due to the complexity of
trying to accomodate all the changes, there is no upgrade path
suggested here. Simply delete the 2.27 setup and perform a fresh
install.
